English Abstract




ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
"The invention provides a capacity changer comprising
at least one evacuated glass tube having an ionizable gas
disposed therewithin and a pair of mutually spaced electrodes
disposed within the glass tube and selectively connectable
through a switch to a first power supply, the gas, when
ionized, acting as a first capacitor electrode. A conductive
coating on the outside of the or each glass tube forms a
second capacitor electrode capacitively coupled to the first
capacitor electrode when the gas is ionized, the first and second
capacitor electrodes thereby forming a two-terminal capacitor. A
second power supply is selectively connectable through a further
switch between the second capacitor electrode and the first capacitor
electrode when the gas is ionized, the second capacitor electrode
further forming at least part of a 1- terminal capacitor when the
gas is not ionized. The two-terminal capacitor formed by the
ionized gas and the second capacitor electrode may be charged and
then, when charged, converted into a one-terminal capacitor formed by
the second capacitor electrode. In this way, very high voltages
may be attained".

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A capacity changer comprising at least one evacuated
glass tube having an ionizable gas disposed therewithin, a pair of
mutually spaced electrodes disposed within said glass tube and
selectively connectable through a switch to a first power supply,
said gas, when ionized, acting as a first capacitor electrode, a
second capacitor electrode for the or each glass tube so arranged
as to be capacitively coupled to said first capacitor electrode
when said gas is ionized, said first and second capacitor electrodes
thereby forming a two-terminal capacitor, a second power supply
and means for selectively connecting said second power supply bet-
ween said second capacitor electrode and said first capacitor
electrode when said gas is ionized, said second capacitor electrode
further forming at least part of 1-terminal capacitor when said
gas is not ionized.
2. A capacity changer according to claim 1, wherein the
or each second capacitor electrode is in the form of a conductive
coating carried on the outside of the or each glass tube but insula-
ted from said spaced electrodes of said glass tube.
3. A capacity changer according to claim 2, wherein said
first power supply comprises a source of alternating or direct cur-
rent for energizing said mutually spaced electrodes in said tube for
ionizing said gas in said tube.
4. A capacity changer according to claim 3, wherein said
second power supply comprises a source of direct current.
5. A capacity changer according to claim 4 further com-
prising a hollow metal sphere enclosing the or each glass tube, said
metal sphere being spaced from the or each glass tube.


6. A capacity changer according to claim 5, compris-
ing a plurality of said glass tubes within said metal sphere,
said metal sphere being connected to each of the conductive
coatings or said glass tubes.
7. A capacity changer according to claim 6, comprising
means for connecting a first terminal of said second direct
current power supply to said conductive coating of said glass
tube and together to said metal sphere, and means for connecting
a second terminal of said direct current power supply means to
a respective one of said mutually spaced electrodes within each
of said glass tubes.
8. A capacity changer according to claim 7, wherein
said mutually spaced electrodes within said glass tubes are
hot filaments.
9. A capacity changer according to claim 7, wherein
said mutually spaced electrodes within said glass tubes are
unheated electrodes.
