English Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
The present invention provides in a motorized two-
wheeled vehicle having a liquid-cooled internal combustion engine
and a radiator for supplying cooling liquid thereto, disposed in
front of the engine, mounted on the vehicle body, the improvement
in which the engine is mounted on said frame such that both outer
ends of the cylinder head portions extend laterally beyond the
radiator.

Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. In a motorized two-wheeled vehicle having a body, a
liquid-cooled internal combustion engine, including projecting
cylinder head portions and a radiator for supplying cooling liquid
thereto which is disposed in front of the engine and mounted on
the vehicle body, the improvement in which the engine is mounted
on said body such that outer ends of the cylinder head portions
extend laterally beyond the radiator.
2. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the engine
is of a horizontally opposing type whereby cylinders thereof are
disposed on the right and the left of the body.
3. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the engine
is of a V type whereby cylinders thereof are disposed on the right
and left of the body.

Description

Note: Descriptions are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

J ~3~333
The present invention rela~es to the cooliny of an
internal combustion engine in a motorized two-wheeled vehicle. In
particular, the present invention relates to a combined air and
liquid cooling of a normally liquid-cooled internal combustion
` engine from a radiator in a motori~ed two-wheeled vehicle.
- Recently, with the increase of cylinder volume of the
internal combustion engine in a motorized two-wheeled vehicle, a
i liquid-cooled engine has been used having a radiator. Ilowever,
P the radiator must have an extremely large volume to obtain suffic-
1 10 ient cooling of the engine solely by the radiator. When such a, large radiator is mounted on the vehicle body, the radiator has
i such disadvantages as protruding outwardly from the sides of the
vehicle body so as to spoil the appearance of the vehicle, and risk ~ -
of damage when the vehicle is turned over. Further, the driving
stability of the vehicle is lost by the increase of the size and
the weight of the radiator.
The present invention provides for the cooling of a
liquid-cooled engine in a motorized two-wheeled vehicle inter alia
by means of a radiator which is not subject to the aforesaid
disadvantages.
According to the present invention, in a motorized two-
wheeled vehicle having a body, a liquid-cooled internal combustion
engine including projecting cylinder head portions and a radiator
for supplying cooling liquid thereto which is disposed in front
of the engine and mounted on the vehicle body, the improvement in `
which the engine is mounted on said body such that outer ends of
the cylinder head portions extend laterally beyond the radiator.
This arrangement is especially suitable where the
engine is of a horizontally opposing or V type where cylinders
thereof are disposed on the right and the left.

The present invention will be further illustrated
by way of the accompanying drawing in which:-
Fig. 1 is an elevational side view of a motorizedtwo-wheeled vehicle according to one embodiment of the
present invention, and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along the line II-II
in Fig. 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, the motorized
two-wheeled vehicle comprises a vehicle body 1 and a liquid-
cooled internal combustion engine 2 and a radiator 3 for coolingthe engine 2 disposed in front of the engine 2 mounted on the
body 1.
The engine 2 is of a horizontally opposing or V type
in which cylinders 2a, 2a are disposed on the right and the left,
and the cylinder head portions 2b, 2b on both outer ends thereof -i
extend laterally to both sides beyond the radiator 3. The
radiator 3 is provided between a pair of right and left down-
tubes la, la on the front portion of the vehicle body 1 so that
the radiator 3 is protected by the down tubes la, la. A flange 4
is provided for attaching the radiator 3, by means of attaching
bolts 5. The vehicle also includes a carburetor 6 and an
auxiliary blower 7 attached to the rear surface of the radiator 3.
Thus, when the vehicle body 1 is given motion by the
engine 2, the engine 2 is subjected to a liquid cooling from
the radiator 3 and to air cooling-by the wind, generated by the
movement of the vehicle, which wind acts on the projecting
cylinder head portions 2b, 2b and thus the same may be effectively
cooled as a whole.
Thus, according to this invention, the engine is not
only liquid-cooled from the radiator, but also air-cooled on its

cylinder head ~ortions whi~h become particularly high in tempera-
ture, so that the radia-tor may be of relakively small volume and
the foregoing disadvantages of conventional radiators can be
eliminated, and additionally attaching of the radiator to the
vehicle body can be facilitated.
