English Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
Fastener for securing a resilient thermal insulation
blanket onto a base to form a surface to be walked on. The
fastener has a washer-like thin disk applied over the blanket
and having a central hole. A tubular depression member depends
from one surface of the disk, this member having the form of an
elongated wall of which the length is approximately half the
thickness of the blanket. The wall has a bore in communication
with the disk central hole and a bottom wall having a through
passage of a diameter smaller than that of the base. A screw
having a threaded stem and head is mounted in the well with the
stem thereof extending through the passage through the well
bottom wall. This screw is secured onto the base until the head
stands generally at the bottom of the well.

Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive
property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. Attachment means for securing a resilient thermal
insulation blanket of a predetermined thickness onto a base to
form a surface to be walked on, said attachment means comprising:
- a washer-like generally flat and thin disk to be
applied over said blanket and having a central hole;
- a tubular depression member integrally depending
from one surface of said disk, said member having the form of
an elongated well of which the length is approximately half
the thickness of said blanket; wherein said well has a bore in
communication with said disk central hole and a bottom wall
having a through passage of a diameter smaller than that of said
bore, and
- a screw having a threaded stem and a head and being
unrestrainedly mountable in said well, said stem having a size
to freely extend through said bottom wall passage and a length
to reach and securely fix said screw onto said base with said
head then standing at said bottom wall in said well, in
uncompressed condition of said blanket, said head being larger
than the diameter of said passage and smaller than that of
said bore.
2. Attachment means according to claim 1, wherein
said bottom wall is outwardly tapered and has a sharp end edge.

Description

;Z3
The present invention relates to an attachment means
for secuxing a resilient thermal insulation blanket onto a base
to form a surface to be walked on, such as a roof surface.
Known fasteners of the above type have the disadvange
that when the insulation blanket is compressed, for instancP
when it is walked on, the fastener is not correspondingly com- -
pressed and becomes s~lient from the surface of the blanket.
Where the latter has been covered with roofing felt or the like
covering, the top of the fastener will extend through it and
damage it.
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide
an attachment means which will follow easily any depression of ~ -
the insulation blanket and will not allow any of its part to
protrude from its surface.
More specifically, the attachment means of the invention
comprises a washer-like generally flat and thin disk which ! in `
use, is applied over the blanket and which has a central hole.
A tubular depression member integrally depends from one surface
of this disk, this member havlng the form of an elongated well
of which the length is approximately half the thickness of the
blanket. The well has a bore in communication with the disk
central hole and a bottom wall having a through passage of a
diameter smaller than that of the bore. A screw having a
threaded stem and a head is unrestrainedly mountable in the well,
the stem having a size- to freely extend through the bottom wall
passage and a length to reach and securely fix the screw onto
the base with the head then standing at the bottom wall in the
well, in uncompressed condition of the blanket. The head is
larger than the diameter of the passage and smaller than that
of the bore.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the
bottom wall is outwardly tapered and has a sharp end edge

whereby more easi]y to be driven in~o the insulation blanket.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be
described with respect to the appended drawing wherein:
Figure 1 i5 a perspective view of a attachment means
made according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view through part of a
roofing installation wherein an attachment means according to ~ -
the invention is used, the insulation blanket being uncompressed; ~
Figure 3 is a view similar to that of Figure 2 but ~;
showing the roofing installation being walked on.
The attachrnent means comprîses a generally flat washer-
like thin disk 1 having a tubular depression member 2 integrally
dependiny from one surface of the disk 1 and being in the form
of an elongated well 2 of which the length is approximately half
the thickness of the blan]cet 5. This well has a bore in com-
munication with a hole at the center of the disk 1 and has a
bottom wall 4 provided with a through passage of a diameter
smaller than that of the bore. Also, the outer surface of the
bottom wall 4 is preferably tapered and has a sharp end edge.

- A screw 3 completes the attachment means. It has a
stem of which the length is sufficient to be driven through the
remaining of the blanket 5, securely held onto the base 6 and,
in uncompressed condition of the blanket 5, has its head
generally standing at the bottom of the well 2. This screw is
:~ :
unrestrainedly received into the well to allow free relative
movement between it and the well 2. In use, the insulation
blanket 5 and the attachment means will be covered by a roofing
felt 7 or the like covering.
With the above construction, it will be easily
gathered as is clearly illustrated in Figure 3 that when someone
walks on the roof and steps over an attachment means, the disk 1
- and well 2 will easily yield into t~é blanket 5 without any

danger of the head of the screw 3 protrudin~ fxom the well 2
to damage the felt 7.
The attachment means, more particularly the disk 1
and well 2 may be made of any suitable material such as plastics
material and it is highly durable, elastic and cheaply manu-
factured.
It is obvious to one skilled in the art that various :
embodiments of the invention may be achieved within the scope
of the claims appended.
