TITLE OF THE INVENTION
"Laminated safety pane"
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A laminated safety pane,suitable for vehicle
windscreens, comprises an outer glass pane, an inner
glass pane and a transparent layer of plastics
laminating material interposed between the outer
and inner panes and adhesively bonded to these panes.
The strength of the adhesive bond between the laminating
material and the inner glass pane is made substantially
greater than the strength of the adhesive bond between
the laminating material and the outer glass pane.

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A laminated safety pane comprising an outer pane, an inner pane,
and a laminating material which glues the two panes together, in which the
adhesive strength of the connection between the inner pane and the laminating
material is made substantially higher than that between the outer pane and the
laminating material.
2. The laminated safety pane of claim 1, in which at least one of said
two panes is made of silicate glass.
3. The laminated safety pane of claim 2, in which said inner pane is
made of non-prestressed silicate glass.
4. The laminated safety pane of claim 1, in which said inner pane is
thinner than said outer pane.
5. The laminated safety pane of claim 4, in which said inner pane is
at most 2 mm in thickness.
6. The laminated safety pane of claim 1, in which said laminating
material is a layer of visco-elastic plastics.
7. The laminated safety pane of claim 6 in which said laminating
material is selected from the group comprising polyvinylbutyral (PVB),
polyvinylalcohol (PVA), polyurethane (PU), polycarbonate (PC) and
polyvinylchloride (PVC).
8. The laminated safety pane of claim 6, in which the laminating
material is a laminating foil.

9. The laminated safety pane of claim 1 in which the adhesive strength
of the connection between said inner pane and said laminating material is
4 - 10 Pummel units and the adhesive strength of the connection between said
outer pane and said laminating material is 1 - 2 Pummel units.
10. The laminated safety pane of claim 9, in which the adhesive strength
of the connection between said inner pane and said laminating foil is 4 -6
Pummel units.
11. The laminated safety pane of claim 1, in which the surface layer of
said inner pane adjacent the laminating material is impoverished in alkali
metal and alkaline earth metal atoms, to increase adhesive strength.
12. The laminated safety pane of claim 11, in which the surface layer
of said inner pane adjacent said laminating material has been de-alkalized by
treatment with hot acidified water.
13. The laminated safety pane of claim 8, which has been formed by a
method including the step of applying adhesion-increasing primer to the
surface of the inner pane destined to be adjacent said laminating foil,
before the lamination is performed.
14. The laminated safety pane of claim 13, in which said inner pane has
been treated with primer-containing washing solution before the lamination
has been performed.
15. The laminated safety pane of claim 8, in which said laminating foil
has one surface which is more strongly adhesive than its other surface, the
surface of high adhesion being adjacent said inner pane.

16. The laminated safety pane of claim 15, in which said laminating
foil comprises an outer foil layer, adjacent said outer pane, and an inner
foil layer adjacent said inner pane, the inner foil layer being more strongly
adhesive than the outer foil layer.
17. The laminated safety pane of claim 16, in which said outer foil
layer consists of soft PVC and said inner foil layer consists of a copolymer
of vinylchloride and glycidyl methacrylate with a content of about 40% by wt.
of a high-molecular, non-migrating and non-water-absorbing plasticizer.
18. The laminated safety pane of claim 8, in which said laminating
foil is very strongly adhesive to untreated glass and wherein the surface
of said outer pane adjacent the laminating foil has been treated to reduce
its capability of being adhered to by plastics.
19. The laminated safety pane of claim 18, in which the surface of said
outer pane adjacent the laminating foil has been subjected to an alkaline
treatment, before the lamination is performed, to reduce its capability of
being adhered to by plastics.
20. The laminated safety pane of claim 19, in which the surface of said
outer pane adjacent said laminating foil has been pretreated with soap
solution before the lamination is performed.
21. The laminated safety pane of claim 1, in which the thickness of
said inner pane is at most 1 mm and that of said outer pane is at least 2 mm.
22. The laminated safety pane of claim 1, including a tough, soft
plastics layer disposed on the side of said inner pane remote from said
laminating material.

23. The laminated safety pane of claim 22, in which said plastics
layer is self-repairing.

pane 10 is less than to the pane 12. The said alkaline treatment of said
surface may consist in washing it down with a suitable soap solution.
Alternatively, if laminating foils capable only of a lesser a & esion to
untreated glass are used, such as, for instance, polyvinylbutyral foils,
preferably that surface of the inner pane 12 which is adjacent the laminating
foil 14 has been treated, in manufacture of the laminated safety pane and
prior to lamination, in such a way as to ensure that the respective surface
layer of pane 12 is impoverishet in alkali metal and alkaline earth metal
atons. In this case the treatment may consist, for instance, in boiling the
pane 12 in acidified water. Of course, a primer, preferably a washing primer
which is added to the washing water, can also be applied to that surface of
the inner pane 12 which is adjacent the laminating foil 14. An a & esion
increasing coating, re particularly an adhesion increasing primer, may be
applied to the surface of the pane 12 adjacent the foil 14 before lamination
is performed.
Fig. 3 shows a variant embodiment in which the laminating foil 14
of the embodiments illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 is replaced by a double
foil consisting of an outer foil 15 and an inner foil 16. The principle
underlying this use of the double foil is to provide, in effect, a foil
of which one surface is capable of adhering to glass with a greater strength
than the other surface. This mdght, of course, be achieved by means other
than the use of a double foil, but a double foil is a convenient
