ABSTRACT
The invention is concerned with an apparatus for
storing and moving a drill pipe having an annular recess at
each of upper and lower portions thereof, to a position in
alignment with the axis of a drill hole. The apparatus of the
invention is adapted to be mounted to a mast and comprises
mutually parallel upper and lower arms of equal length each
pivoted at one end to the mast, and a pipe rack pivoted to the
other end of each of the arms and forming therefore a
parallelogram with the arms and mast. Upper and lower clamping
means of similar construction provided with clamps are mounted
respectively on upper and lower portions of the rack, each
clamping means being driven by separate drive means for opening
and closing the clamps, the clamps engaging the annular
recesses of the drill pipe. The apparatus further includes
a fluid pressure ram means pivoted to the mast and to one of
the arms of the parallelogram, for moving a drill pipe to a
position in alignment with the axis of the drill hole and
returning the drill pipe to the initial storage position,
and a catch for holding the apparatus in the initial position.

%1~
~he present i~vention relates to drilli~g machi~es a~d
more particularly to apparatus for stori~g and movi
drill pipes to position in alig~ment ~ith the a~is o~
- a drill hole.
Known in the art drill are pipe storage and handli~
means of the "drumt' t~pe co~sists of the central vertical
sha~t carr~ing two disks, Each of these disks is provided
with a de~ice to ~ix the end o~ a drill pipe. The drill
pipe fitted to this device is substantially parallel to
lQ the ce~tral shaft and held in this positio~ b~ fixing
devices of the disks. The central shaft is mounted on
arms pi~oted to a mast, Said k~o~-m meaDs is provi~ed ~;ith
three d~ivin~ means: for moving the drum to a position
i~ alignment with the drill hole a~is, turning the d~um
around the central sha~t to select a drill pipe, and,
~i~ally, releasing the dIil`l pipe selected~
Said know~ device is complicated in desig~ and has con-
siderable over-all dime~sio~s,
gnO'Nn in the art is also a~ apparatus for drill pipe
~tor~ge and a~dlin~ ~hich we take as a prototype, This
apparatus stores and moves only one drill pipe to a position
ix~, alignme~t with the drill hole axis. q`he apparatus

at the other end, to a movable pipe rack making up a parallelogram;
an upper pipe rack clamping means for opening and closing and
engaging a drill pipe; a socket at lower pipe rack portion for
supporting a drill pipe, a means for opening and closing the
clamps of the clamping means under the action of drill pipe
weight; and a fluid pressure ram means pivoted at one end to the
mast and at the other end to one of the arms and serving for
moving the rack with the clamping means and a drill pipe in a
plane. ~wo or three-such apparatus are mostly mounted in the
mast of a drilling machine.
A disadvantage of this known apparatus is the presence
of a socket in which the lower end of the drill pipe is lowered,
which necessitates additional operations of lowering the drill
pipe in the socket while moving the drill pipe to a position
in align~ent with the drill hole axis and removing the drill
pipe by the rotary drive means of a drilling machine.
It is an objec~ of the present invention to provide
such an apparatus for storin~ and moving drill pipes to a
position in alignment with the axis o~ a drill hole, which be
capabLe of reduciny the round trip time while the drilling
machine is at work~
In accordance with the present invention, ~here is
thus provided an apparatus for storing and moving a drill
pipe having an annular recess at each of upper and lower
portions thereof, to a position in alignment with the axis of
a drill hole. The apparatus of the invention i5 adapted to ~e

arms of equal length each pivoted at one end to the mast, and a
pipe rack pivoted to the other end of each of the arms and
forming therefore a parallelogram with the arms and mast.
Upper and lower clamping means of similar construction provided
with clamps are mounted respectively on upper and lower portions
of the rack, each clamping means being driven by separate drive
means for opening and closing the clamps, the clamps engaging
the annular recesses of the drill pipe. The apparatus further
includes a fluid pressure ram means pivoted to the mast and
to one of the arms of the parallelogram, for moving a drill pipe
to a position in alignment with the axis of the drill hcle and
returning the driLl pipe to the initial storage position, and
a catch for holding the apparatus in the initial position.
Thus, in accordance with the present invention, an
apparatus is provided for storing and moving drill pipes to a
positionin alignment with the drill hole axis, which permits
round trip time reduction while boring a drill hole.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will
now be described by way of example with reference to the
accompanying drawings in which:

the fluid pressure ram mea~s 44 moves the rack 19 with
clamping means 20 and 21, which hold the selected drill
pipe, to the lower position in alignment with the drill
hole axis down into the threaded box of the pipe previously
screwed to the drill ~tring. 'I'hen the rotary drive means,
driven b~ a hydraulic m~or10, couple the spindle o~ the
rotary drive means with the drill pipe handled and the t~vo
drill pipes ~ith a slight axial shift of the rotary drive
mea~s 9.
In the process of screwin~g the drill pipe handled,
together with the apparatus 15, is lowered ~or the lenOth
. of thread, the rod 36 of the lo:Jer clamping mea~s 20
sinking into the central carrier 2~ by pressing an abutment
of mast 8, compressir~ the spring 38 and moving pin 35 out
of meshing with flange 28 ~he ei~her end of the rod ~6
mo~es the lever 39 ard the stretching deYice 41, lifts
the rod 37 of the upper clamping means 21 and disengages
th~ central carrier 27 o~ the uppe~ clamping means a~d the
flange 28.
By actuatin~ the fluid pressure ram means 31 o~ the
lower and upper clampi~g means 20 and 21, the central
carrier 27 tu~s a~d opens levers 22 through guides 26
releasing, therefore, the dr~ll pipe, thereafter the appara-
tus 15 is moved by fluid pressure ram means 44 to the stora~

At the last stage of motion of the apparatus 15, the
bracket 51 presses the skew tongue 49 of the rod 46
thereby sinking said tongue. Thereafter, when the hole 50
in the bracket 51 coincides with the axis o~ rod 46, said
rod enters the hole 50 of the rod 51 under the actio~ of
the s~ring 47 and holds the apparatus 15 in the storage
position.
