PIPE CONNECTION FOR PLASTIC PIPES
ABSTRACT
A pipe connector for plastic pipes has a
connecting sleeve flanged at one end and, near the
other end, an internal abutment for the pipe end. An
O-ring is located in a groove in the sleeve and sur-
rounds the pipe. Two semi-cylindrical shells having
an internal radius equal to the pipe's external
radius have an internally grooved flange at one end
adapted to straddle the sleeve flange. The shells
have teeth-like ridges and are tightly held together
so that the ridges bite into the pipe wall.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive
property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. A pipe connector for plastic pipes comprising
a connecting sleeve flanged at one end and having near
the other end an internal abutment for the pipe end, an
O-ring housed in an annular groove of said sleeve at said
one end surrounding the pipe, characterized in that there
are provided two semi-cylindrical shells of an internal
radius equal to the external radius of the pipe and having
an internally grooved flange at one end adapted to straddle
the said flange of said sleeve, said shells having a number
of internal ridges of tooth-like profile and means to
tightly hold said shells together so that said toothed
ridges bite into the wall of the pipe end, said sleeve
being adapted for fluid connection to a pipe coupling
system.
2. A pipe connector as claimed in claim 1, wherein
the shells are provided at their sides with outwardly
extending lugs, the lugs of both shells being in register
with each other and being adapted to be connected by removable
locking means.
3. A pipe connector as claimed in claim 1 or 2,
wherein the means for holding the shells together are
constituted by clamps.
4. A pipe connector as claimed in claim 2, wherein
the locking means are constituted by a bolt and nut, by
self-tapping screws or the like.

The present invention concerns a pipe connector
for connecting plastic pipes to each other~ to any outlet
or to other connectors.
The problem of connect~ng plastic pipes is
different from that of connecting metal pipes since the
plastic material may deform with concomitant change in
flow conditions, if the pressure of the connector is too
great. Therefore, the connectors used up to now provide
an annular member having an internal screw-thread of teeth
which, when said member ls screwed onto the pipe, bite
into its wall to effect a tight connection.
The main drawback of this connector lies in
the fact that the annular member is expensive to produce,
i.e. the internal screw-thread requires an expensive mold
and during molding deformations may occur which will
prevent a liquid-tight connection. A further disadvantage
in these connectors is that they cannot be applied to
pipes of large diameter.
It is the object of the present invention to
provide a pipe connector for plastic pipes which overcomes
the above-mentioned drawback and which can easily be con-
structed for and applied to pipes of any diameter.
An aspect of the invention is as follows:

In a preferred embodiment of the invention the shells are provided
at their sides with outwardly extending lugs, the lugs of both shells
being in register with each other and being adapted to be conn~cted by
removablo locking means~ e.g~ a bolt and nut~ self-tapping screw or
clamp and the like,

A pipe 1 is surrounded by a sleeve 2 having an external flango 3
at one end and an internal shoulder 4 near the otherJ against~hich

be integral with a similar one at the end remote from said flango~ i~e.
it may constitute a unit to connect a si~ilar pipe at the other end,
or the sleeve may be provided at that end with an external or internal
screw thread for connection to any other fittingsO ~11 t~s is known
per se in pipe connectors.
According to -the invention~ two semi-cylindrical shells 7, g are
provided~ the shells having an outwardly e~tending flange ~ having an
internal groove ad~p-ted to straddle the ~lange 3 Or sleeve 2.
The shells 7, 8 have an internal diameter equal to the external
diameter of the pipe and are provided with internal ridges 10 which in
profile constitute teoth ~daptcd to bite into the wall 1 of the pipeO
The wall o~ each shell 7, g merges at each side with an outwardly ex-
tending lug 11~ 12, respectively, said lugs being in a~ial register at
each side of the shell.
The lugs 11, 12 are provided in the embodiment shown with a throug~-
going bore housing a bolt 13 and nut 14 to tighten the shells to each
other and thereby to cause the teeth 10 to engage the pipe~

If desired~ a narrow bore m~y be made in lugs 11~ 12 and a self-
tapping screw may be inserted therein to -tighten the shells 7~ ~ together~
Furthermore~ i~ desired~ a cl~mp or the like t~ghtening means may be
pro~ided for tlghtening the shell~ to each other.
It c~n be seen that the connector above described ma~ be adapted
~or connecting pipes of any required diameter without having to change
the baslc constructional features of the connector.
