CANADIAN PATENT APPLICATION
OF
PER IVAR ST.ANG.LBERG
FOR
TRANSPORT BOX
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A transport box for perishable goods and like products
comprises an inner box consisting of insulating compound of
cellular plastic and an outer protective box of board. Accor-
ding to the invention the boards in the outer protective box
consist of solid fibreboard which includes two or more different
board layers with glue lines therebetween and which has a grammage
of at least about 1000 g/sq.m, said solid fibreboards being coa-
ted with a metallized plastic film on the outside of the protec-
tive box.

Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

I CLAIM:

products, comprising an inner box (2) consisting of insulat-
ing compound of cellular plastic or the like and an outer
protective box (3) of board, wherein the boards in the outer
protective box (3) consist of solid fibreboard (4) which in-
cludes two or more different board layers (5-8) with glue
lines (9) therebetween and which has a grammage of at least
about 1000 g/sq.m, said solid fibreboards (4) being coated
with a metallized plastic film (10) on the outside of the
protective box (3).
2. A transport box as claimed in claim 1, wherein the
solid fibreboards (4) include at least three different board
layers (5-8) with glue lines (9) therebetween, the boards in
the intermediate layer or layers (6, 7) including chemical
admixtures to prevent the layers (6, 7) from swelling when
attached by moisture or water.
3. A transport box as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein
the glue lines (9) between the different board layers (5-8)
of the solid fibreboards (4) consist of waterproof glue.
4. A transport box as claimed in claim 1 or 2,
wherein the metallized plastic film (10) on the outside of
the protective box (3) consists of polyester, the metal suit-
ably being aluminium.
5. A transport box as claimed in claim 1 or 2,
wherein the solid fibreboards (4) are coated with LD polyethene
(11) on the inside of the protective box (3).
6. A transport box as claimed in claim 1 or 2,
wherein the protective box (3) consisting of solid fibreboard
(4) includes a lid (12) and a bottom (13), and only the lid (12)

is coated on its outside with the metallized plastic film (10),
while the bottom (13) of the protective box (3) is coated with
LD polyethene (11).

5~
F'A(`I~(.R()UNI~)_0~' TIIT. INVL'NTION:
The presellt invention relates to a transpor-t box for
perishable goods and like products, comprising an inner box con-
sisting of insulatin~ compound oE cellular plastic or the like
and an outer protective box of boa:rd. Characteristic of the
invention is that the boards in the outer protective box con-
sis-t of solid fibreboard, which includes two or more diff~rent
board layers with ~lue lines therebetween and which has a
qrammaqe of at least about 1000 g/sq.m, said solid fibreboards
being coated with a metallizecl plastic film on the outside of
the protective box. With this invention a transport box has
been created which to a very high degree protec-ts the contents
against temperature changes, external forces and radiation. The
solid Eibreboards give, in combination with the insulating
compound of cellular plastic or the like, an unexpectedly good
insulation, at the same time as the solid fibreboards are
especially apt to resist external forces. The protection against
radiation is provided by the covering on the outside of the
protective box, which covering is of metal, e.g. aluminium,
and, because it is coated with plastic, also protects the box
against external a-ttacks by moisture. The radiation protection
is of vital importance because the transport box is also in-
tended for air transportation, whereby it is liable to be ex-
posed to the radiation occurring in airports.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING-
-
The invention will be described more fully below with
reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows an embodiment,
chosen by way of example, of the transport box and in which:-
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the box;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the box; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on an enlarqed scale of
the solid fibreboards included in the protective box.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT:
The transport box 1 comprises an inner box 2 and an

?~
outer box 3. The inner box 2 consists of an insulating compound
of cellular plastic or -the like. The outer box 3 is a protective
box of board.
The boards in the ou-ter protective box 3 consis-t of
solid fibreboard 4 which includes two or more different board
layers 5-8 wi-th glue lines 9 therebetween, as is apparent from
Fig. 3. The solid fibreboards 4 should have a grammage of at
least about 1000 g/sq.m. According to one embodiment each of
the layers 5 and 8 has a grammage of 60 g/sq.m~ while each of
the layers 6 and 7 has a grammage of 400-500 g/sq.m. The three
glue lines 9 consisting of waterproof glue have each a grammage
of about 15 g/sq.m.
The boards in the two intermediate layers 6 and 7 in-
clude chemical admixtures -to prevent the layers from swelling
when attacked by moisture or water. As the solid fibreboards 4
with their waterproof glue lines 9 also are provided with plas-
tic coatings 10 and 11 on their sides it is obvious that -the
protective box 3 is highly resistant to attacks by moisture.
The protective box 3 is coated on its outside with
a plastic film 10, which is metallized to provide protection
against radiation. The plastic film 10 consists preferably
of polyester. The metal in the film is preferably of aluminium.
The plastic film 11 on the inside of the protective box 3 con-
sists preferably of LD polyethene, which may be pigmented with
e.g. white. During the manufacture the plas-tic films 10 and 11
adhere directly to the board layers 5 and 8.
As is apparaen-t from Fig. 2, the protec-tive box 3
includes a lid 12 and a bottom 13. In this case it is only
lid 12 that is coated on its outside with the metallized
plastic film 10, while the bottom 13 is coated with LD poly-
ethene (plastic film 11). Thus, the bottom of the protective box

5~)
3 is not proviclecl with any metallized plastic film~ q~his :is
so because the rislc of the bottom being exposed to radiation
is exceedingly small.
The transport box 1 according to the present inven-
tion may of course be made in most various sizes. Accordingto one embodiment, however, the size is 30 x 46 x 83 cm.
If the transport box has this size, the solid fibreboards 4
in the cover box 12 should suitably have a grammage of about
1070 g/sq.m, while the solid fibreboards 4 in the bottom box
13 should have a grammage of about 1155 g/s~.m. In this case
the solid fibreboards 4 are 1-2 mm thick, suitably 1.7 mm,
while the cellular plastic in the inner box 2 is 3-5 cm thick.
The transport box 1 is especially suitable for trans-
port of such perishable goods and the like as are kept in
hermetically sealable containers of non-rigid plastic and the
like. This container should suitably fit in the inner box 2.
Alternatively, several such containers should fit in the box
2. The air in the hermetically sealed container may also be
replaced by a suitable preserving gas.
The invention is not limited to that described above
and shown in the drawing but may be modified within the scope
of the appended claims.
