Back~rcund _ the_Invention
Palnt mlxin~ or blending machines in which the contents of
a can of paint i8 agitated by rapid shaking or rotating the can
are well known. Prev~ously known devices of thi~ ~ype,however,
have gener~lly been heavy,noi~y and prone to such heavy vibration
that they require anchoring to the floor of a bullding or 30me
other substantial ~upport. Despite rubber or spring moUn~s, their
gyration~ tend to cause damage to their suppor~s and often their
own mechanisms. In order to devèlop the motion neces~ary to mix
the paint, sub~tantial power sources consuming much energy are
required. Some prior ar~ devices also require substantiRl time
for mixing.
Accordingly, it i~ an ob~ect of the pre~ent invention to
provide a p~int mixing or blending machine of relatively ~imple
construction which will thoroughly mix or blend liquids such as
paint in a short period of time.
Another ob3ect of the present invention i9 to provide a
paint mlxing machine in which the weight,including the contalner
of pAin~ ubstantially balanced durlnp~ mixing to reduce
vibration, noise and load~.
A further ob3ect of the present invention i3 to provide a
paint mixing machine which can be loaded and unloaded quickly and
easily.
Still another ob3ect of the present invention i~ to provide
a paint mixing machine whlch i8 energy efficient, durable and
useful for mlxing cans of different size~.

~etails of the Drawin~
Referring to the drawings and ~pecifically to Figure l
and 2, 10 indicates a complete embodiment of the paint mixing
and conditloning machine made in accordance with ~he pre~ent
invention. The machine i~ mounted upon a base support ll to
which there i8 attached a vertical support plate 12 made of
8 teel, alumlnum or other ~uitable rigid material. A circular
aperture 13 i8 provided in the vertical support plate 12 and
i8 preferably centrally located on said plate. The circular
aperture i8 of a size to receive a rotat~ng container 17 for
the paint to be conditioned, as hereinafter more fully descr~bed.
A flat pulley shaped disc 14 having a window 15 there~n i8
peripherally and rotatably carried on the supportplateby molded
resilient wheels 16 which are secured to the vertical support
plate l2 by means of stub shafts upon which the wheels 16 are
freely carried~ The molded wheels are made of resilient urethane
or some other wear resistant plast~c or rubber material. Each of
the wheel~ 16 18 provided with a peripheral flange 19 whlch is
received within an annular groove 19 in the periphery of the
pulley shaped disc 14. The wheels 16 are ln frictional contact
with the annular groove ~0 at ~11 times and al80 serve a~ a 6hock
absorbing mount for the verticsl support plate 12.
The pulley shaped dlsc 14 i~ drivably supported by a
resilient drive wheel 21 which engages the ~aid disc within the
annular groove 20 as ~hown at 22. The drive wheel 21 i9 9ecured
to the utput shaf t 23 of a ~ource of rotary power ~uch ao the

motor 24, best shown in Flgure 3. The output ~haft 23 ext2nds
through a bore 25 in the vertieal ~.upport plate 12. It wlll be
seen from an examina~lon of Figure 3, that the motor 24 i8 mounte d
upon a plvot plate 26 swingably mounted by a bolt 27 which i8
secured to the vertical ~upport plate 12. A slot 28 in the
pivot plate 26 and a pin 29 serve to limltvthe swing of the pivot
plate 26. Since the pivot plate i8 free ~o swlng about i~ bolt
27, the weight of the motor 24 maintain~ the drive whecl 21 in
~ood frictional en~agement with the annular groove 20 of the
pulley shaped disc 14. In sddition, this arrangement eliminates
any need for noisy gear~ or gear trains for applying rotary
power ~o the pulley shaped disc 14.
Referring ~gain to Figures 1 and 2, it will be seen that
a pillow block 30 i8 secured to the front face of the pulley
shaped disc 14 between the edge of the window 15 and a
rectangular opening 31 in the pulley shsped di~c. A shaft
32 i8 freely carried within the pillow block 30 and extends
out of back end of pillow block coaxial with vertical axis
33 of the contalner 17. A flat circular plate 34 (hereina~ter
referred to as the bottom plate) is secured to one end of the
sha~t 32. The plate 34 i8 provided with groove~ 35 which are
concentric with the center of said plate and of a size tO
receive containers, such as cans, of different diameters therein
As best shown in Figure 3, the bottom plate extends
horizontally through the window 15 in the pully shaped dlsc
14 and also through the circular aperture 13 in the ~upport
pla~e 12. As a result, the container of paint 17 18 sub-
stantially balanced wlthln the machlne 10 with a mimimum of
overhang from the Aupport plate 12.
~ The oposlte end of the plllow block shaft 32 he~

secured thereto a beveled wheel 36, herelnafter called the
friction drive wheel, formed of a suitable wear resistant
resilient m~terial ~uch a~ urcthane,neoprene or rubber.
The friQtion drive wheel 36 ride~ withln a comp~ mentary
groove 37 cut into the face Gf the pulley shaped disc 14.
The said disc groove 37 ha~ a beveled wall 38 ~7hich makes
good frictional contact with the beveled surface 39 of the
friction drive wheel. It will be apparent that as the
pulley shaped di~c 14 i8 rotated by the mo~or 24, the
friction drive wheel will turn, thereby rotating the container
17.
The container 17 i~ ~ecured to the bottom plate 34 by
mean~ of a clamp plate 40 freely carried by a threaded stud 41
in spaced alignment wlth the shaft 32, Notches 42 in the
periphery of the clamp plate 40 serve to anchor the handle
43 of the paint container 17 during rotation and tumbling
of the said contalner.
A yoke 44 (best shown i~l Figure 1) is ad~ustably
secured to the pulley shaped disc 14 on the outer or pillow
block face of the said disc. The threaded stud 41 i8
rece~ved withln an internally threaded bore 45 ln the yoke 44.
Movement of the clamp plate 40 toward or away from the
bottom plate 34 is effected by rotatlng a clamping wheel 46
secured to the threaded stud 41 between the yoke 44 and the
clamp plate 40.
Where container~ of substantially differen~ ~izes are
to be mixed, the yoke 44 may be loosenèd by backing off
set screws 47 on the yoke, ~liding the yoke along ways 48 on
the pulley shaped di~c 14 unt~l the desired ~pacing to
re Lve the contaLner L~ re~ched and then tLghtenlng the

In one embodiment of the present invention ~ultable for
mlx~ng or conditioning paint, the ~ource of rotary power
^wa~ a 1/4 horse power a/c electric motor having an output
of 1725 RPM, the drive mechanism achieve~ approxlmat~ly 4
times the RPM of the container 17 to that of the pulley shaped
four tlmes
disc ~he container rotate~each revolution of the pulley
~haped disc~.
From the foregoing,it will be seen that the operation
of the paint mixing and conditloning machine is as follows:
The yoke 44 is ad~usted to the approximate height for
the paint container size, The container is placed upon the
bottom plate 34 with the can rim set into the groove 35
which matches the container siæe. The clamping wheel 46
i8 then turned until the container is firmly ~ecured between
the bot,tom and clamping plate~ 34,40. The hsndle 43 of
the container is then raised and snapped into two spaced notches
42 on the top plate. Power is then spplied to the motor 24
thereby driving the pulley-shaped disc 14 and c~u~ing the
can to tumble about its horizontal axis while rotating about
its longitudinal axis. The apparatus can be operated for
a time intërval long enough to achieve ehe desired mixing of
the contents of the container. For container~ of normal
type of water 30ase or oll base paints, thi~ time interval i~
approximately t~econds depending upon the temperature of the
con~ents and its cond~tion prior to mixing. The motor 24 is
then ~topped, the clamping wheel 46 turned to release the
clamp plate 40,follow~ng which the eontainer m~y be removed
from the apparatus.
While the above description has referr~ to mixing and
condltionint pslDt, it aill be Apparent that a wide variety

of liquld a~ well as solld materi&ls may be ~ed in the
containers without depart~ng from the spirit of the present
inven~ion.
