Abstract of the Disclosure
A plodder outlet assembly for producing a bicolored detergent bar com-
prising a first plodder outlet for delivering a first mass of detergent material
to a compaction chamber. Four pipes are provided for delivering a second deter-
gent material to the compaction chamber. These pipes extend into the compaction
chamber and abut the inner walls thereof leaving a cruciform space for the first
detergent material. The compaction chamber is slightly conical in configuration
for compaction purposes and so that material flowing beyond the ends of the
pipes will envelop the second detergent material. Detergent bars are produced
comprising a cylindrical first body having a first color. Four cylindrical
bodies are embedded in the first body in spaced relationship. These separate
bodies are of a different color or colors from the first body and extend between
the opposite ends of said first body. The first body may have a plurality of
small irregular variegated inserts of the color or colors and material or mate-
rials from which the separate bodies are formed.

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A plodder outlet assembly for producing bicolored detergent bars com-
prising a plodder outlet for delivering a first material mass, a compaction
chamber having inner compression walls fitted over the end of the plodder out
let, and a plurality of spaced pipes extending through said plodder outlet
into said compaction chamber and abutting against said inner compression walls
for the delivery of separate continuous columnar masses of a second material
differently colored from said first material mass.
2. A plodder outlet assembly according to claim 1, wherein said inner
walls are slightly tapered away from said plodder outlet.
3. A plodder outlet assembly according to claim 1, wherein said pipes
are circular in cross section.
4. A plodder outlet assembly according to claim 1, wherein there are
four of said pipes.
5. A plodder outlet assembly according to claim 1, wherein there are
four of said pipes defining a substantially cruciform configuration there-
between for said first material mass.
6. A plodder outlet assembly according to claim 5, wherein said pipes
have ends terminating in said chamber, said chamber being circular in cross
section, and tapering slightly away from the ends of said pipes so that said
first material mass spreads outwardly of said cruciform configuration to
envelop said second material masses.
7. A plodder outlet assembly according to claim 6, wherein said pipes
are circular in cross section.

8. A plodder outlet assembly according to claim 7, wherein said pipes
terminate no more than one-third the length of said compaction chamber.
9. A detergent bar comprising a first body of a first colored detergent
material having opposite ends and a plurality of separate uniform columnar
bodies of a different color from said first body embedded in said first body.
10. A detergent bar according to claim 9, wherein a plurality of small,
irregular, variegated inserts are formed in said first body of the same color
as said material of said separate bodies.
11. A detergent bar according to claim 9, wherein said first body is
cylindrical in configuration.
12. A detergent bar according to claim 9, wherein said separate bodies
are cylindrical in configuration.
13. A detergent bar according to claim 9, wherein said first body is
cylindrical in configuration, said separate bodies being also cylindrical in
configuration.
14. A detergent bar according to claim 13, wherein said separate
cylindrical bodies are all of the same size.
15. A detergent bar according to claim 13, wherein said separate bodies
extend the full length of said first body and extend between said opposite ends.
16. A detergent bar according to claim 9, wherein there are four of said
separate bodies.
17. A detergent bar according to claim 9, wherein said separate bodies
are equally spaced.

18. A detergent bar according to claim 9, wherein there are four of said
separate bodies, which are equally spaced from each other.
19. A detergent bar according to claim 13, wherein said separate bodies
are equally spaced from each other and extend between said opposite ends, said
separate bodies being four in number.
20. A detergent bar according to claim 9, wherein said first body is
circular in cross-section, said separate bodies being each circular in cross-
section.
21. A detergent bar according to claim 19, wherein said separate bodies
are white.
22. A detergent bar according to claim 18, wherein the separate bodies
opposed to each other are of the same color but different from the color of
the separate bodies adjacent to them.

m is invention relates to apparatus for manufacturiny deteryent bars
and, more particularly, to a plodder nozzle assembly for produciny a bicolored
detergent bar and to deteryent bars and, more particularly to multicolored deter~
gent bars produced thereby.
In the past, bicolored soap and de-teryent b æ s have been pro~uced. One
procedure for producing a multicolored bar was to provide inserts of characters,
letters or numerals and mold the bar about the inserts. Another procedure was to
partially mix colored soap chips in a mass of soaps of a different color so a
variegated bar would be produced~ United States Patent No. 3,884,605 discloses a
dRvice for producing striped soap bars. United States Patent No~ 4,201,743 dis-
closes a method of makiny soap bars wherein indicia are formed by forcing soap
material through dies into another mass of soap material. United States Patent
No. 2,296,842 discloses indicia provided in a soap bar.
Numerous problems have beset the manufacture of bicolored s~ap bars
generally caused by nNilimal pressure at the nozzle orifi oe . This usually leads
to a variety of troublesl including hazy or foyyy inserts, distortion of one mate-
rial by the other, irregular internal shapes being formed and a slow rate o-f pro-
ductionO
These previous soap production ~ro oe dures were not satisfactory for
commercially-produced detergent bars b cause the procedures used were not compat-
ible wi~h the detergent materials and were far too expensive ~or a com~ercial pro-
duct.
The present invention overcQmes the problems of the prior art ~y pro-
viding a co-extruded detergent bar wherein the co-extrusion of the detergent bar
assures that the separate bodies will maintain their shape, while also remaining
securely fixed wit~n the m~in first bod~ and whereLn different colored deteryent
mixes can be used to provide ~or a highly attractive bicolored detergent bar. To

further increase the visual appeal of the detergent bar, small irregular varie-
gated inserts of the same color or colors as the separate bodies may be ormed
in the first main body.
The present invention has for its objec-t to produce a bicolored soap
or detergent bar wherein the problems of the prior art are overcome.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a plodder
outlet assembly for producing bicolored detergent bars comprising a plodder
outlet for delivering a first material mass~ a compaction chamber having ilmer
compression walls fitted over the end of the plodder outlet, and a plurality
of spaced pipes extending through said plodder outlet into said compaction
chamber and abutting against said inner compression walls for the delivery of
separate continuous columnar masses of a second material differently colored
from said first material mass.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a
detergent bar comprising a first body of a first colored detergent material
having opposite ends and a plurality of separate uniform columnar bodies of a
different color from said first body embedded in said first body.

Refer~iny to Eigures 1, lA, 2, 2A ~nd 3, ~here is sh~wn a bicolored
detergent bar 10. The terms "detergent" and "soap" are to be considered inter-
changeable within the limits of this invention. r~he bar 10 includes a r~ain or
first bo~y 12 of any suitable and desirable color being formed of a detergent
material. The body ]2 is of substantially circular cross secti~n and has ends 14
r3nd 160 E ~ edded by co-extrusion are four separate cylindrical bodies 18, 20, 22
and 24, preferably of the same size as each other, and of a different, preferably
contrasting, color or colors. The separate bodies 18, 20, 22 and 24 are of a
detergent camposition which may be different from that of the main body 12 and
may contain additions, such as conditioners, perfumes, bleaching agents or
whiteners or the like. When bleaching agents or whiteners are used, the separate
bodies 18, 20, 22 and 24 are preferably white. In using multiple added additives,
opposed sets of separate bodies 18 and 22 and 20 and 24 may be each of different
colors from both the ~ain body and the other set of separate bodies.

In Figures lA and 2A another embcdiment of the invention i5 shown where
small, irregular variegated inserts 26 are formed in the ~ain bcdy 12 and are of
the same color or colors as the separate kcdies 18, 20, 22 and 24 to increase the
eye appeal of the bicolored detergent bar~
Re~erring now to Figures 4 and 5, therein is disclosed a plodder outlet
assembly 30. A plodder outle~ 32 is ccnnected to one kæ rel of a conventional

two barrel Mazzoni plodder, the other barrel of -the plo~der being connected to
four equally spaoed pipes 34, 36, 38 and 40.
Threadedly detachabl~ secured to the extruder outlet 32 at 42 is ~ ~ n-
pressi~ chamber 44, the innex walls of which taper irlwardly slightly as the~ pro-
ject away from the plodder outlet 32, and thl~s the chamber is of a trunc~ted con-
ical configuration, though the taper is only very slight; i.e., on the order oE
akout 5.
The pipes 34, 36, 38 and 40 extend into the compaction cha~ber 44, but
termlnate within the first third of the length thereof.
An Lmportant feature of ~he present invention is that the pipes 34, 36,
38 and 40 abut against the inner walls 46, leaving a cruciform~shaped spa oe 50,
into which rnaterial from the outlet 32 and first extruder barrel is delivered.
Sin oe the pipes 34, 36, 38 and 40 ~erminate in the first third of the
length of the c~mpaction chamber, the pressure on the first mass of material
forces material into the spac~ between the second rnaterial oo~ing from the pipes
to envelop the four cylindrically-shaped masses of the second material. This
spa oe between the second material masses and the ir~er walls is due to the thick-
ness of the walls of the pipes 34, 36, 38 and 40. Due to the relief of stresses
on the first mass of material because of the space to envelop the second mass of
material, there is no perceptible cracking of the detergent har while a firm bond
between the material rnasses is achieved. Since the material masses are of differ-
ent colors, the bicolored detergent bar 10 is achieved.
