English Abstract

A BASKET STRAINER
Abstract of the Disclosure
A strainer for filtering liquids which includes a housing
having an inlet port and an outlet port. A removable filtering
element is located within the housing and is at the upper end
of an upturned section of a port.

Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A liquid strainer comprising a housing having
side and bottom walls and a top opening spaced from
said bottom wall, a removable cover spanning said top
opening, inlet and outlet ports in said housing, an
upturned section within said housing terminating in an
open upper end, said outlet port in liquid
communication with said upturned section at its lower
end, a removable rigid filtering element located within
said housing, said filtering element including a
reticulated body having an open upper end contacting
said upturned section upper end, said filtering element
body upper end being spaced from and below sections of
said cover with said filtering element body being
placed in a liquid flow path between said ports whereby
liquid entering said housing through said inlet port
flows into said upturned section and over the open
upper end thereof and through the filtering element
body to filter the liquid and exits the housing through
the other of said ports.
2. The liquid strainer of Claim 1 wherein said
filteing element body includes a lip adjacent its upper
end, said lip contacting said upturned section upper
end.
3. The liquid strainer of Claim 2 wherein said
filtering element includes an arched strip spanning
said filtering element body upper end and contacting
said cover when the cover spans said housing top
opening to retain said filtering element lip in contact
with said upturned section upper end.
4. The liquid filter of Claim 2 wherein said
filtering element lip contacts said upturned section

\
A BASKET STRAINER
Summary of the Invention
This invention relates to a strainer for filtering
liquids and provides for a removable filtering element.
The strainer includes a housing having side and bottom
walls and a top opening which receives the filtering element.
Inlet and outlet ports serve to maintain liquid communication
through the housing. One of the ports includes an upturned
section within the housing. A removable cover spans the top
opening of the housing. The filtering element includes a
reticulated body having an open upper end which contacts the
upper end of the upturned port section to place the filtering
element in a liquid flow path between the inlet and outlet
ports whereby liquid entering the housing will flow through the
filtering element and out of the housing through the outlet
port.
The strainex may be cleaned by removing the co~er from the
top opening of the housing and lifting the filtering element out
of the housing. The filtering element preferably includes a
narrow strip of material which spans the open upper end of the
element. The strip serves as a handle for lifting the filter-
ing element from the housing`~and is constructed to contact the
cover to retain the filter body upper end in contact with the
upper end of the upturned port section.
It is an object of this invention to provide a strainer
for liquids having a removable filtering element within a
filter housing.
Another object of this invention is to provide a filter
having an upturned internal port section which at its upper
end contacts the open upper end of a filtering element in
such a manner that the filtering element may be easily and
quickly lifted from within the filter housing for cleaning

or replacement.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent
upon a reading of the following description.
Brief Descri~tion of the Drawings
A preferred emhodiment of the invention has been chosen
to best illustrate the principles of the invention wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the filter assembly.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top view of the filter assembly
with a portion of the cover cut away for purposes of
illustration.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken along line 3-3
of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the filter
assembly housing with the cover removed and the
~ ilterin~ element raised for purposes of illustration.
Description of the Pre~erred Em odiment
The preferred embodiment illustrated is not intended to
be exhaustive or to limit the invention to the precise ~orm
disclosed. It is chosen and described to best explain tha
principles of the invention and its application and practical
use to thereby enable others skilled in the art to best
utilize the invention.
The strainer 10 includes a housing 12, defined by a side
wall 14 and a bottom wall 16, and a removable corner 20 which
spans a top opening 1~ in the housing. Cover 20 is fastened
to housing 12 with hold down bolts 13 and nuts 15. Housing 12
includes an inlet port 22 through which liquid enters and an
outlet port 24 through which filtered liquid exits. Each
port 22, 24 includes a mounting flange 23 ~or connection to
external piping. The housing includes an upright cylindrical

section 26 which is in sealing contact at its bottom edge with
housing bottom wall 16. Upturned portion 26 includes an
inwardly projecting annular lip 38 at its upper end. Lip 38
can have an annular groove 40 formed in its upper surface.
An O-ring seal 42 is fitted within groove 40. Outlet port 24
extends through housing side wall 14 and is connected into
cylindrical section 26 near its lower end.
A filtering element 28 is seated within housing 12 and
includes a reticulated, generally rigid basket-shaped body 29
having an opening 30 in its upper end defined by an outturned
lip 32. Filt~ring element 28 is suspended within housing
cylindrical section 26 by its lip 32 being supported upon
lip 38 of the cylindrical section with the side and bottom of
its body 29 preferably spaced rom the cylindrical section.
~n arched strip 33 of flexible shape-retaining material spans
the opening 30 of filtering element body 29 and is attached
at its ends to lip 32.
In the embodiment shown, with filtering element body
lip 32 resting upon housing cylindrical section lip 38 to
suspend filtering element body 29 within the cylindrical
section, strip 33 of the filtering element will contact
cover 20 when the cover spans housing opening 18. This
pressure of cover 20 against strip 33 maintains contact bet-
ween filtering element 28 and housing cylindrical section 26.
The liquid,as shown by flow arrows 44, enters housing 12
through inlet port 22, fills the space 45 between cylindrical
portion 26 and housing side wall 14, and flows into filtering
element 28 at its open end 30. The iiquid then flows out of
housing 12 through reticulated filtering element body 29,
cylindrical portion 26, and connected outlet port 24.
To change or clean the filtering element 28, cover 20
is removed by removing hold down nuts 15 from bolts 13.

Filtering element 28 is then pulled upwardly, as seen in
Fig. 4, from housing 12 by grasping strip 33 with the
filtered or strained material remaining within filtering
element hody 29. In some operations, it may be desirable
to use a flexible filter bag within filtering element body 29.
It is to be understood that the invention is not to be
limited to the above description but may be modified within
the scope of the appended claims.
