English Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A spacer ring which has an indented reinforcement
groove is fastened to the outer rim of a dual wheel of a
vehicle. A fastening ring is welded to the inner surface
of the reinforcement groove. The outer rim and the spacer
ring are pressed against the vehicle wheel rim by a plural-
ity of tensioning devices, which are suspended on the
fastening ring. The outer wheel is placed against the
vehicle wheel in any desired rotational position and
coupled therewith with the aid of the tensioning devices,
the number of which is adapted to the load on the dual wheel.

~2~2~
DUAL, WHEEL FOR A VEHICLE
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to a dual wheel having one
vehicle wheel rim and one outer rim as well as a coupling
device disposed between them.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Equipping vehicles with dual wheels is known, and it
has proved itself in practice as a means for reducing the
pressure exerted on the road or other surfaces per unit of
area, for improving traction and for increasing reliability
on hills. The known coupling devices for connecting the
two wheel rims of the two individual wheels as a rule
comprise a flange-like screw connection having levers
exerting radial tension, which by means of locks are
suspended toward the dual wheel on the wheel flange or on
special T-rings welded into the deep well of the rim of the
dual wheel. The T-rings are welded into the fib at the
crossbar The locks are suspended on the upper, flat part
of the Trying
These coupling devices have the disadvantages that
in large vehicles the crossbar of -the T-ring is bent by
the heavy load, and that for securing the outer wheel Jo
the vehicle wheel, the outer wheel can be coupled only at
certain coupling positions.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is accordingly an object of the present invention
to develop a dual wheel of the genera] type described above
which does not have these disadvantages and nevertheless
can be manufactured at favorable cost.
This object is attained by providing a spacer ring
having at least one indented reinforcement groove on the
outer wheel rim, on the inner face of which a fastening ring
I`:

is secured. A plurality of tensioning devices is connected
with the vehicle wheel rim and suspended on the hastening
ring, and these devices press the outer rim and the spacer
ring against the vehicle wheel rim. Further advantageous
embodiments of the invention are also disclosed herein.
The dual wheel according Jo the present invention
has the advantage that the outer wheel can be coupled onto
the vehicle wheel in any desired position, so that even
heavy wheels can be mounted without effort.
A further advantage is that the tensioning devices
can be relatively short, with the result that the spacer
ring rotates with the outer wheel only to a very slight
extent relative to the vehicle wheel, since the tensioning
devices which during this operation describe a correspond-
tingly smaller radius, diverge more rapidly away from the
fastening ring which is the tangent. This arrangement also
contributes to greater stability. - -
In one aspect of the present invention there is provided a dual wheel for a vehicle, the wheel comprising 20 inner and outer vehicle wheel rims and a coupling devic
e
therefore intermediate the rims, a spacer ring intermediate
the rims and forming a unit with the outer rim, the coupling
device comprising an attachment ring mounting respectively
a plurality of clamping devices suspended therefrom for
detachably securing to the inner rim characterized in that
: the attachment ring is secured to the spacer ring.

I
One exemplary embodiment of the invention will flow
be explained in greater detail, referring to the drawing.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF TIE DP~AWIN~
The single figure ox the drawing shows a section
in the radial direction taken through a dual wheel with
the coupling according to the invention.
DESCRIPTION OF THY PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
The dual wheel comprises an outer rim 1, and a vehicle
wheel comprising a rim 4 and scintilla dusk The invention
coupling 20 comprises a spacer ring 2 welded at weld toga-
lion 9 into one shoulder 12 of outer rim lo A plurality
of axially effective, releasable tensioning devices 3 disk
tribute about the circumference tensions the outer rim 1
against the vehicle wheel rim 4. The tensioning devices 3
are suspended on the side toward the vehicle on eye nuts 5
or weld brackets, which are connected to the wheel disk 16.
.

1212400
On the side toward the outer rim l, the tensioning devices
3 are suspended on a fastening ring 6. The fastening ring
6 is welded with a weld seam 8 on inner surface 17 of a
reinforcement groove 7 of the spacer rink 2 in such a man-
nor that one side of the fastening ring 6 protrudes and
forms a free space toward the spacer ring, so that the
tensioning devices 3 can be suspended with the tensioning
hook 15 on the fastening ring 6. As a result of the pro-
vision of the space between ring 6 and the adjacent portion
of ring 2 the fastening ring 6 is welded in an endless seam,
and the tensioning devices 3 can be suspended at any point
on ring 6. The outer wheel can accordingly be coupled to
the vehicle wheel at any desired position, since the
tensioning devices 3 can be suspended on the fastening
ring 6 at the point where the eye nuts 5 are radially at the
same level. Even very heavy dual wheels can be so coupled
effortlessly, because carrier cams are no longer necessary.
Since no cams at all are provided toward the vehicle for
transmitting radial forces, the spacer ring 2 tends to
rotate opposite the vehicle wheel when the vehicle is
driven under load. The tensioning devices 3 thereupon pull
the outer wheel, via the spacer ring 2, still more tightly
against the vehicle wheel. As a result of the above struck
lure for suspending the tensioning devices on the dual
wheel, a high degree of rigidity is attained. Since as a
consequence of the particular rigidity no driving cams are
required, even heavy dual wheels can be coupled effortlessly,
without having to be rotated into any predetermined coupling
position.
The reinforcement groove 7, which is produced by
means of rolling, for example, serves as an attachment
location for the fastening ring 6 and as a reinforcement
element for the spacer ring 2. In the case of heavily loaded
dual wheels, it is also possible to dispose a plurality of
reinforcement grooves 7 on the spacer ring 2, the grooves
-- 3 --

being indented either outward or inward.
The number of tensioning devices 3 may be adapted
to the expected load on the dual wheel.
The reinforcement groove 7 can also be replaced with
a flat steel ring secured to the spacer ring 2, the fasten-
in ring 6 then being welded to the flat steel ring in such
a manner that a free space makes the suspension of the
tensioning hook 15 possible. The reinforcement groove 7
with the fastening ring 6 may also, however, be disposed
on the outer rim 1. The spacer ring 2 is welded or screwed
to the outer rim 1. As the vehicle begins to move, the
outer wheel rotates slightly counter to the inner wheel,
which effects a still closer proximity and reinforcement
of the two individual wheels.
The tensioning devices 3 are tightened with the aid
of the rectangular tube 14, and the tripping distance 10
is adjustable by means of an adjustable bottom spacer 11.
While the invention has been described in detail
above, it is to be understood that this detailed descrip-
lion is by way of example only, and the protection granted is to be limited only within the spirit of the invention
and the scope of the following claims.
