ABSTRACT
A combined shingle starter and vent for use along the eaves
of buildings subject to rain, snow and ice storms and for pre-
venting freeze back is formed of one piece of thin, bendable,
sheet metal, about ten feet long, bent to form a relatively
wide, inclined starter panel fitting under the lower courses
of the shingles, a horizontal strut panel extending back to the
fascia and containing a full length row of transverse, closely
spaced parallel ventilation louvers and a downward depending
attachment panel for nailing to the fascia board to prevent an
unsightly, rippling of the thin metal. There is an inturned
terminal flange on the attachment panel which flattens during
nailing to retain a flat planar appearance of the panels of the
device. An integral drip bead is formed along the front of the
horizontal strut panel.

Claims

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A one piece shingle starter vent formed of thin bendable
sheet metal, and about ten feet long said vent being of the type
characterized by:
a starter panel having a top wall at an angle of about
45° and a side wall that is substantially vertical;
a horizontal strut panel connected to said side wall and
having ventilation louvers closely spaced therealong over the full
length, and which are parallel and extend transversely and horizon-
tally on said panel;
a vertical attachment panel having an integral flange
inturned from the lower edge of said attachment panel at an angle
of about 45° for the full length thereof;
said flange flattening into the plane said attachment
panel in the areas nailed to the fascia of a dwelling and said
flange having a lower edge in tight, intimate contact with said
fascia for the full length thereof when so nailed.
2. A one piece strip as specified in claim 1 wherein: said
horizontal strut panel has an integral downwardly extending drip
bead along the front and below the side wall of the said starter
panel.

It has heretofore been proposed to make a roof
ven~ilating strip with six panels formed by four bends, as in
United States Patent 2,954,727 to Katt of October 4, 1960. In
United States Patent 1,444,821 to Wilson of February 13~ 1923, a
starting strip is shown having three panels and two fold lines,
but with no ventilating apertures.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The strip of this invention is similar to that of the
above mentioned Wilson patent in having an inclined starter panel,
a horizontal bottom strut panel, and a vertical attachment flange
panel.
The invention provides a one piece shingle starter vent
formed of thin bendable sheet metal, and about ten feet long said
vent being of the type characterized by: a starter panel having a
top wall at an angle of about 45 and a side wall that is substan-
tially vertical; a horizontal strut panel connected to said side
wall and having ventilation ~ouvers closely spaced therealong over
the full length, and which are parallel and extend transversely
and horizontally on said panel; a vertical attachment panel having
an integral flange inturned from the lower edge of said attachment
panel at an angle of about 45 for the full length thereof; said
flange flattening into the plane said attachment panel in the
areas nailed to the fascia of a dwelling and said rlange having a
lower edge in tight, intimate contact with said fascia for the full
length thereof when so nailed. Hitherto the nails have been found
to sometimes cause unsightly outward bulges entirely along the
highly visible eaves of the dwelling.

the terminal end of each attachment panel of each ten foot strip
so that when the nails are applied to the attachment panel, close
to the flange, the flange is flattened proximate the nail heads
and the portion between the nail heads is in intimate, sealed,
tight contact with the fascia board. Thus, instead of unsightly
ripples and outward flares, or bulges, the attachment panel
achieves an even, regular, slightly sinuous appearance which is
decorative and not unsightly.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING
Figure 1 is an end elevation of the combined starter and
vent strip of the invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the inside of the
elongated strip of Figure 1, the drip bead, the transverse louvers
and the inturned flange;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing the
inturned flange flattened by the nails into the fascia board of a
typical dwelling; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary front elevation of a portion
of the strip shown in Figure 3.
DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
As shown in the drawing, the one-piece shingle starter
and ventilation strip 20 is about ten feet long and preferably
formed of sheet material, such as thin bendable metal, and bent
to form the inclined starter panel 21, the horizontal strut panel
22 and the vertical attachment panel 23. As is clearly shown,
there is low vertical side wall 15 interposed between the starter
panel 21 and the strut panel 22.

In this invention, the attachment panel 23 is provided with
a full length integral inturned flange 32, bent as at 33, at
an angle of about 45 and about one eighth to one quarter of an
inch in width. As shown in Figo 3, when the attachment flange

¦ ten to ~wenty inches apart along the entire fascia board, the
¦ flange 32 is flattened as at 34, under and near each nail, and
¦ the spaces 35 between nails are pressed tightly into intimate

¦ with an obvious, visible space between edge and fascia, the
¦ bottom edge 36 is turned inwardly throughout its length with no
¦ space between edge and fascia, and at most only a gentle undula-
