English Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE:
A double sash arrangement for a composite
window wherein an outer substantially L-shaped hollow sash
member and a substantially T-shaped hollow inner sash
member are secured to each other by hinges or the like. A
pair of projections are provided on mutually facing sides
of the inner and outer sash members for interlocking the
sash members with respect to each other. The projections
at the outer sash member fit into an open groove formed by
the projections on the inner sash member. A height of the
projections at the outer sash member is larger than a
height of the projections of the inner sash member. The
projections of the inner sash member have formed there-
between an outwardly flaring groove so that the sashes,
after an insertion into each other, are in contact substan-
tially along end faces of the projections of the outer
sash.

~:234a3
The present invention relates to a window
construction and, more particularly, to a double sash for
a composite window wherein an outer sash of a substantially
L-shaped hollow synthetic resin profile rod or bar shaped
member and an inner sash of a substantially T-shaped hollow
synthetic resin profile rod or bar shaped member attached
to each other by hinge means, with the outer and inner pro-
file members respectively having, on mutially facing sides,
one pair of interlocking projections so as to avoid a dis-
placement of the outer and inner sashes with respect toeach other.
In, for example, German Vtility Model 6,949,357
published on March 12, 1970 and having as inventor Heinrich
Oswald, a double sash construction is proposed which is
initially produced of one-piece frame sections which are
preprepared for accommodating two window panes. Subsequent
to the manufacturing process, the one-piece double sash is
then severed or sawed apart along a plane parallel to the
longitudinal center plane thereof to form outer and inner
sashes.
In, for example, Auslegeschrift 2,742,998, a
process for the production of a double sash window or door
is proposed wherein profiled synthetic resin rods or bar
members for forming the outer and inner sashes are inter-
locked in undercut projections and subsequently cut to sizeand welded together into a finished frame, with the welding
sites of the locking strips being cut out in a miter zone.
The aim underlying the present invention essen-
tially resides in providing a double sash for composite
windows wherein the problem of not welding the double
sashes together during the combined welding process in the
miter zone and a subsequent separation thereof is solved
in an advantageous manner.
According to the present invention there is pro-
- 1 - ~

~;~23483
vided a double sash arrangement for a composite window, the
arrangement comprising an outer sash means, and inner sash
means, and hinge means for connecting the inner and outer sash
means to each other, characterized in that projection means
are provided on mutually facing sides of each of said sash
means, said projection means include a pair of projecting
members provided on each of said sash means and spaced
from each other so as to define a groove means therebetween,
the spacing between the pair of projecting members of one
of said sash means is greater than the spacing between the
pair of projecting members of the other of said sash means
such that the projecting members of said other of said
sash means enter without any resilient deflection into the
projecting members of said one of said sash means, and
abut against a bottom wall means of the groove means of said
one of said sash means substantially along end faces of the
projecting members of said other of said sash means when
the inner and outer sash means are assembled, the project-
ing members of said other of said sash means have a height
greater than the height of the projecting members of said one
of said sash means, so as to partially overlap the project-
ing members of said one of said sash means, said projection
means thus assembled preventing the relative displacement
of the inner and outer sash means in the closed condition
of the window.
According to a preferred aspect, there is
provided a double sash arrangement for a composite window,
the arrangement comprising an outer sash means, an inner
sash means, and hinge means for connecting the inner and outer
sash means to each other, characterized in that projection
means are provided on mutually facing sides of each of
said sash means, said projection means include a pair of
projecting members provided on each of said sash means and
spaced from each other so as to define a groove means there-

~Z3~3
between, said projecting members extending along a length ofthe inner and outer sash means, the spacing between the
pair of projecting members of one of said sash means is
greater than the spacing between the pair of projecting
members of the other of said sash means such that the project-
ing members of said other of said sash means enter without
any resilient deflection into the projecting members of said
one of said sash means, and abut against a bottom wall means
of the groove means of said one of said sash means substan-
tially along end faces of the projecting members of saidother of said sash means when the inner and outer sash means
are assembled, the projecting members of said other of said
sash means have a height greater than the height of the project-
ing members of said one of said sash means, so as to partial-
ly overlap the pxojecting members of said one of said sash means, said projection means thus assembled preventing the relative
displacement of the inner and outer sash means in the
closed condition of the window, and in that at least one
vent opening is provi.ded in the projecting members of said
inner and outer sash means.
As evident from the above noted features of the
present invention, the concept of locking the two sashes
together and establishing an interlocking engagement is
abandoned inasmuch as by virtue of the present invention a
guidance is provided by projecting stems provided on both
sashes. In this connection, it is important that the
projections or stems do not completely extend over each
other but rather, by virtue of the differing heights,
achieve only a partial overlapping of the respective pro-
jections such that, during a simultaneous rolling togetherof the miter corners at the outer and inner sash, only a
minimum of actually undesirable welding of the projections
- 2a -

~22348~
with one another is obtained in the miter zone; whereas,
a further zone remains free of welding so that separation
may be accomplished simply by moving the inner and outer
sashes apart without the need for utilizing additional
severing operations with other machines or tools.
Preferably, the projections on the respective
inner and outer sashes are machined or shortened at upper
and lower transverse struts of the sash at several locations
down to a length of preferably about 25 mm so that vent
openings may readily be produced.
Preferably, the outer sash is formed with a pro-
jection jutting or extending out on an angle from an inner
angle of the L-shaped profile member, with a top side of
the projection serving as a supporting surface for a glass
pane or glazing and an underside of this projection serving
as an abutment for a glass holding strip. Moreover, the
inner sash of the present invention may be formed on an
inside of the glass holding support with a projection
extending or jutting out at a right angle for supporting
the glass pane or glazing and producing an abutment with
an insertion groove for the glass holding strip.
By virtue of the last noted features of the
present invention, the outer and inner sashes may be, in a
compact fashion, respectively provided with one projection
which constitutes at the same time the supporting surface
for the glass panes or glazings as well as the abutment
for the fixation of the glass mounting strip.
In order to enable a joining of the two sashes
~o each other by hinge means, in accordance with still
urther preferable features of the present invention, the
outer and inner sashes form a continuously extending fitting
groove which is unilaterally undercut at the inner sash
thereby providing a simple mounting of the double sash.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present
n

1~234~3
invention to provide a double sash for a composite window
which avoids, by simple means, shortcomings and disadvan-
tages encountered in the prior art.
Another object of the present invention resides
in providing a double sash for a composite window which
is simple in construction and therefore relatively inexpen-
sive to manufacture.
Yet another object of the present invention
resides in providing a double sash for a composite window
which has high fitting accuracy and which minimizes if not
avoids the problems normally occurring during a welding
operation of the double sash.
A still further object of the present invention
resides in providing a double sash for composite windows
which ensures the existence of adequate ventilation between
the panes of the composite windows in a simple and efficient
manner.
Another object of the present invention resides
in providing a double sash for composite windows which
enables a separation of the sashes in an extremely simple
manner.
These and other objects, features, and advantages
of the present invention will become more apparent from the
following description when taken in connection with the
accompanying drawings which show, for the purposes of
illustration only, one embodiment in accordance with the
present invention, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of an L-shaped
profile member of an outer shaft of a double sash for a
composite window constructed in accordance with the present
invention;
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view of a T-shaped
profile member of an inner sash of a double sash for a
composite window constructed in accordance with the present

invention;
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view of a composite
window with a blind frame and double sash constructed in
accordance with the present invention;
Figure 4 is a horizontal cross sectional view
through a composite window of the present invention;
Figure 5 is a horizontal cross sectional view of
a composite window constructed in accordance with the
present invention with an installed line or shutter; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a portion of a
sash means.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like
reference numerals are used ,hroughout the various views
to designate like parts and, more particularly, to Figures
1 and 2, according to these figures, a composite window
construction, composed of hollow synthetic resin profile
rods or bar members is provided wherein a double sash
includes two profile members with an outer sash profile
member 1 having essentially L-shaped configuration with
two hollow chambers 10, 11. The hollow chamber 10 simulta-
neously forms an abutment strip for a glass pane or glazing,
with the hollow chamber 11 being a central hollow chamber
which may, for example, be optionally reinforced with a
reinforcing profile 30 of, for example, galvanized steel,
aluminum, or the like. A projection 12 is provided on the
outex sash profile member 1 with the projection 12 being
arranged in angled form in the inner L-shape angle of the
- hollow profile member 1 and serving for retaining the
glazing or glass pane (not shown).
The top surface of the projection 12 forms the
supporting surface 121 for the glazing or glass pane and,
on an opposite or free end of the projection 12, a protu-
berance 122 is formed which, together with cams 13 on an
inner boundary of the profile member 1, serves as an
; ,,

iL2Z3483
abutment for a glass mounting strip (not shown). The
profile member 1, on a side facing the sash, is constructed
with U-shaped projection 15, with the projection 15 having,
on one side thereof, the stop projection 151 for contacting
the blind frame. The U-shaped projection forms, with an
inner boundary surface of the profile member 1, a part of
a fitting groove 8 shown most clearly in Figure 3. On a
side facing the inner sash, the outer profile member 1 is
formed with projections 16, 17 for enabling a fixing of the
position with respect to the inner sash profile. The pro-
jections 16, 17 have a height Hl and are spaced from each
other by a mutual spacing Al. The projections 16, 17 have
on their outer of free end side end faces 161, 171 which
rest on the inner sash profile. An outwardly opening groove
162 is arranged between the projections 16, 17. Advanta-
geously, the sash profile member 1 may be extruded, for
example, from PVC without a plasticizer.
As shown in Figure 2, the inner sash is formed
of a profile member 2 having a substantially T-shaped con-
figuration and includes three hollow chambers 20, 21, 22,
with the hollow chamber 20 forming a glass holding projec-
tion for contacting the glazing or glass pane. The hollow
chamber 22 forms a so-called stop projection for contacting
the blind frame profile and the chamber 21 forms a central
chamber which may be optionally reinforced by, for example,
a reinforcing profile 31 of, for example, galvinized steel,
aluminium, or the like. A projection 23 is formed at the
glazing projection of the sash profile member 2 at a dis-
tance from the central chamber 21 and forms a mounting
groove 233. A top side or surface of the projection 23
simultaneously forms a supporting surface for the glazing
or glass pane. A projection 231 is formed on an underside
of the projection 23 for locking the glass holding strip in
place. A projecting stem 23 is provided in a zone of the
-- 6 --
J

~2~23483
glazing or pane of glass and serves as an abutment for the
glass holding strip. On a side of the profi].e member 2
facing the outer sash profile member 1, the inner sash
profile member 2 is provided with projections 26, 27 each
of which have a height H2. An outwardly opening groove
262 is formed between the projections 26, 27, with a base
of the groove 262 having a width A2. The outer spacing or
distance Al between the projections 16, 17 of the outer
sash profile member 1 corresponds to the width A2 of the
base of the groove 262 formed between the projections 26,
27 of the inner sash profile member 2 so that the projec-
tions 16, 17 may abut or rest on the base of the groove
262. The height H2 of the projections 26, 27 is less than
the height Hl of the projections 16, 17 of the outer sash
profile member 1. Preferably, the height H2 is between
one-third to one-half the height Hl.
In the assembled composite window of Figure 3,
the double sash which includes the outer sash profile
member 1 and inner sash profile member 2 is brought into
abutment against a blind frame 7 which is mounted in the
masonary in a manner not illustrated in the drawings. In
the assembled arrangement of Figure 3, the projection 151
of the outer sash profile member 1 contacts the projection
of the blind frame 7. A central gasket or seal means 9,
attached to the blind frame 7, contacts or abuts the pro-
jection 25 of the inner sash profile member 2. A further
seal or gasket means 33 is mounted in a groove 33 of the
inner sash profile member 2 such that the stop projection
22 of the inner sash profile member contacts the inside of
the blind frame 7 through the sealing means 33.
The outer sash profile member 1 and inner sash
profile member 2 are joined together by a hinge means Inot
shown) which is accommodated in a groove 8 of the inner
sash profile member 2. The mutual fitting of the projec-

3483
tions 16, 17 of the outer sash profile member 1 into thegroove 262 formed by the projections 26, 27 of the inner
sash profile member 2 ensure a securement against displace-
ment and a fitting accuracy of the profile members. In an
S area of the welded together miter corners of the assembled
composite window, the connection possibly established by
the welding step may be eliminated simply by moving apart
or breaking open the inner and outer sash profile members
1, 2 so that a flawless opening or separation of the
individual sash members 1, 2 of the double sash is ensured.
In order to fix or secure the outer and inner
glazings or glass panes 3a, 3i, appropriate sealing profile
means 5 are nserted into the respective profile members 1,
2. For this purpose, the outer sash profile member 1 and
inner sash profile member 2 are respectively provided with
projections 14, 201 for accommodating the sealing profile
means 5. Additionally, an outer glass mounting or holding
stri~ 6a and an inner glass mounting or holding strip 6c
are provided for enabling a mounting of the glass panes 3a,
3i in the profile member 2. The glass pane or glazing is
normally seated by way of tolerance block members 4 on the
projections 12, 23 respectively, of the outer and inner
sash profile members 1, 2. A small groove 251 is formed
on the inner sash profile member 2 on a side thereof facing
the outer sash profile member 1 beside or adjacent the
projections 26, 27. The small groove 251 together with
the angular recess 152 of the sash profile member 1 form
a so-called fitting groove for receiving the hinge means,
for example, coupling members and/or strip means. The
fitting groove extends continuously along the double sash.
As shown in Figure 4, the hinge means may take
the form of a coupling member 35 and a strip member 34
arranged in the respective fitting grooves.
It is also possible, as shown most clearly in
-- 8 --
~ ~ . .

~LZ2~483
Figure 5, to arrange an appropriate shutter or screen
means 36 between the glazings or glass panes 3a, 3i, with
the shutter or shade means 36 being adapted to be displaced
by an appropriate actuating means 36 of conventional con-
struction.
While we have shown and described only one
embodiment in accordance with the present invention, it is
understood that the same is not limited thereto but is
susceptible of numerous changes and modifications as known
to one having ordinary skill in the art and we therefore do
not wish to be limited to the details shown and described
herein, but intend to cover all such modifications as are
encompassed by the scope of the appended claims.
