TOILET DEODORIZER
This invention relates to new and useful improvements
in deodorizing devices for toilets in order to extract air
from the bowl of said toilet and discharge same after
filtering through a charcoal filter, to the interior of the
room.
Conventionally, such devices require remotely
situated fans and a considerable amount of ducting to conduct
the air from the toilet bowl to an external location such as
into an attic or externally of the building.
This requires a relatively large fan and considerable
ducting and as most of such devices are retrofitted,
installation can be time consuming and expensive.
The present device is completely self-contained and
utilizes an activated chaxcoal filter in order to remove the
objectionable odor so that the air from the bowl can be
discharged directly into the bathroom so that there is no
plumbing, electrical or carpentry work involved in the simple
installation of this product.
In accordance with one aspect of the invention there
is provided a deodorizing device for a toilet having a toilet
bowl which includes an upper rear side, a toilet seat with a
rear portion and spaced apart fasteners hingedly securing the
rear portion of the toilet seat to the upper rear side of the
bowl, said deodorizer device comprising, in combination: an

extractor and collector portion adapted to be situated
between the underside of the rear portion of the toilet seat
and the upper rear side of the bowl, said extractor and
collector portion having a front side with a concave air
intake and a rear side with spaced apart, rearwardly open
notches engageable with said fasteners, the extractor and
collector portion having a depth between the slots and the
front side that is less than the spacing between the
fasteners and the front of the rear portion of the seat, and
an internal duct leading from the air intake; an end portion
on one side of said extractor and collector portion, the end
portion having an internal chamber communicating with the
internal duct of the extractor and collector portion, an
outer end wall and a discharge in said outer end wall; an
electric fan within said internal chamber to draw air through
the duct from the air intake; an activated charcoal filter in
8aid end portion for filtering air passing through the
chamber, said fan moving air from said extractor and
collector portion, through said activated charcoal filter and
out through said discharge, an electric battery in the end
portion and comprising a source of electrical energy for
operating said fan; and switch means mounted on the upper
side 0~ ~aid extractor and collector portion for actuation by
a predetermined pressure upon said seat, said switch means
being electrically connected between said battery and said
fan.

and air intake along a front edge of said planar panel
communicating with said interior chamber, a container
depending from one end of said planar panel operatively
connected to said interior chamber, the container having
an outer end wall and an inner transverse wall of said
container sloping upwardly towards said lower plate and
adjoining an adjacent end of said lower plate, a vertical
baffle extending across said container between the end
wall thereof and the lower end of said transverse wall, an
aperture in said baffle, said end wall of said container
having a cut-away air discharge therein, an electric fan
between said baffle and said inner transverse wall, and
adjacent the aperture in the baffle, an activated charcoal
filter within said container between said fan and said
discharge in caid end of wall and a source of power for
said an.
Another advantage of the invention is that it
conserves fuel inasmuch a~ there i9 no removal of warm air
from the bathroom as there is when a wall fan is turned on
and the warmed air is expelled from the room.
The relatively small fan is preferably battery
operated and the battery and filter require replacement
approximately once a year.
Another advantage of the invention is to

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Proceeding therefore to describe the invention
ln detail, reference should flrst be made to Figures 1
and 2 ln which the device collectively deslgnated 10
comprlses a substantially planar panel 11 preferably made

13(~S~9~
of plastic and consisting of a lower planar plate 12 and
an upper plate 13. These are secured together by screws
14 or the like so that the edges are sealed and the
panels define a flat extractor and collecting chamber
therebetween.
At the end of the lower plate 12, there is
provided a container collectivelY designated 15 which
includes an end wall 16, a base 17, and an upwardly and
inwardly inclining sloping base wall 18 which joins the
remainder of the lower plate 12 in a smooth curve as
clearly shown in Figure 2.
An air entry slot 19 is provided in the front
inwardly curved edges 20 of the upper and lower plates 13
and 12 and notches 20 are formed inwardly along the rear
edqe in spaced apart relatlonship one upon each side of a
cut away portion 21.
These notches engage over the screws or bolts
22 which normally secure the seat 23 of the toilet to the
rear edge 24 of the bowl 25 for opening and closing
hinging action as is conventional. Such seats normally
include small bumpers on the lower surface ad~acent the
front edge thereof to space the seat ~ust above the
surface of the bowl and the bolts 22 are formed so that
the spacing ls retalned at the rear side.

This permits the planar panel assembly 10 to be
engaged on the rear edge 24 of the seat with the notches
engaging around the bolts 22 and the concave air intake
slot 19 facing forwardly and following substantially, the
contour of the rear side of the bowl.
When the seat is lowered in the usual manner,
the planar panel is sandwiched therebetween with the
container 15 being situated externally and slightly to
one side of the side 26 of the bowl.
A fore and aft baffle 27 extends across the
container between the end wall 16 thereof and adjacent
the beginning of the upwardly and inwardly sloping wall
18 as clearly shown in Figure 2 and a circular aperture
28 is formed through this baffle as clearly shown.
A further baffle 29 extends between the end
wall 16 and the baffle 27 and to one side of the
contalner thus defining a battery carrier 30 into which
a 9 volt DC battery 31 may be engaged.
A box like carrier 32 contains activated char-
coal and is perforated on the front and rear faces, the
rear face 33 only being shown in the drawings.
Thi8 slldes into the remainder of the container
wlth the apertures 34 in the filter being situated in a
discharge aperture 35 within the end wall 16 defined by

-" ~3~5Z9~
the two vertical edges 36 of a cut-away portion as
clearly shown.
A small electric fan 37 is supported on the
inboard side of the baffle 27 adjacent the aperture 28
and is operatively connected to the battery by means of a
connector 38 via a microswitch 39 which extends through
the upper surface of the upper plate of the planar panel
and is contacted by the underside of the seat 23 when the
seat is lowered.
It ls positioned so that when the seat is
lowered, the switch is not activated but when a predeter-
mined pressure is applied to the seat from the upper side
thereof, the microswitch actuates and operatively
connects the battery 31 with the fan unit 37. The
circuit is shown schematlcally ln Flgure 5.
In operation, actlvatlon of the unit is by
pressure on the microswitch 39 which operates the fan
whlch then draws alr from the bowl, through the intake
slot 19 and into the lnterior of the planar panel, the
plates of whlch deflne an extractlng and collectlng
portion of the device. The fan forces the alr through
the activated charcoal filter thus extractlng any odor
and dlscharges same through the dlscharge 35 retainlng
any odor causlng elements wlthin the fllter.
