ABSTRACT
A bushing which is fixedly secured to a
lock case by means of pins is placed against the
rotary lock cylinder outside of the door. A similar
bushing is mounted on the other side of the door
panel. The rotary lock cylinder is permanently
centered during assembly, by means of clamping
members. The bushings enable to center and protect
the rotary lock cylinder over its entire length and
at the front thereof.

The embodiments of the invention in which an
exclusive property or privilege is claimed are
defined as follows:
1. A device for securing a rotary lock
cylinder which is inserted through a lock case in
which a first hard metal member surround said rotary
lock cylinder outside a door, wherein the hard metal
member rests against the lock case to be secured
thereto, means enabling said hard metal member to
cover at least in part of front said rotary lock
cylinder in relation to said lock case; said device
also comprising a second hard metal member mounted
inside the door and surrounding internal section of
the rotary lock cylinder.
2. A device according to claim 1, wherein
the first hard metal member comprises a rotatable
cover provided with a slot for inserting a key
therein, said first hard metal member being mounted
in an opening in front of a rotor, said cover being
supported on the lock case by means of a slit sleeve.
3. A device according to claim 1, which
comprises pins extending through the lock case, said
pins being secured at one end to the first hard metal
member and being engaged, at the other end, in the
second hard metal member which rests internally
against the lock case.
4. A device according to claim 3, wherein
the rotary lock cylinder is supported inside the door
by means of pins extending to the second hard metal
member and means preventing said pins from being
unscrewed.
5. A device according to claim 3 or 4,
wherein said pins are arranged in pairs and are
prevented from being unscrewed by means of transverse
pins provided therefor.

6. A device according to claim 3, wherein
said rotary lock cylinder is formed with a cylinder
channel, said pins being arranged on each side of
said cylinder channel.
7. A device according to one of claims 1
to 3, wherein an additional pin is secured internally
of the first hard metal member, said additional pin
engaging in a hole provided in the lock case.
8. A device according to claim 6, wherein
the means for centering the rotary lock cylinder are
mounted on the rotary lock cylinder channel.
9. A device according to claim 8, wherein
the means for centering the rotary rock cylinder
comprise at least one centering element which engages
the rotary lock cylinder and is supported on the lock
case by means of an adjusting screw.
10. A device according to one of claims 1
to 3, wherein the front of the first hard metal
member carries an opening, closed by means of a plug,
giving access to said means for centering.
11. A device according to one of claims 1
to 3, which comprises compensating plates between the
lock case and the first hard metal member and/or the
second hard metal member.
12. A device according to one of claims 1
to 3, which comprises a rod shaped spacing element,
each end of which is engaged in a hole in the lower
parts of the hard metal members.
13. A device according to one of claims 1
to 3, wherein the second hard metal member, arranged
inside the door, comprises a cover mounted on a base,
and the pins which connect the two hard metal members
are inserted through the base from the outside.

14. A rotary lock cylinder for a device
according to claim 3, wherein the cylinder channel is
solid and contains no threaded hole for a flange
screw.
15. A rotary lock cylinder according to
claim 14, wherein at least one depression for
securing a centering element is arranged on the
underside of the cylinder channel.
16. A rotary lock cylinder according to
claim 14, of a Swiss type, wherein the cylinder
channel is reinforced by a screw running axially and
projecting at both ends thereof, said screw being
used to axially center the rotary lock cylinder.
17. An insert lock for a device according
to claim 1, which comprises an opening in the lock
case, through which the rotary lock cylinder can be
inserted, said opening being wide enough to allow
rotary lock cylinders having different shapes to be
inserted in the lock case.

The invention relates to a device for
securing a rotary lock cylinder which is inserted
-through a lock case wherein a first hard metal body
surrounds -the rotary lock cylinder outside the door.
German Patent No. 1,289,454 discloses a
rosette for cylinder ]ocks which is made of solid
material, is encased into the door panel and bears
against the lock case. This rosette fails to provide
sufficient protection since it can be gripped with a
suitable tool and the rotary lock cylinder can be
twisted off at its weakest point. The weakest point
in this cylinder is at its center since, below the
catch, a por-tion is removed to provide a channel for
the catch and the remaining part of the cylinder is
lS s-till further weakened by providlng a threaded bore
for the flange screw.
~ erman OS 26 09 647 proposes a reinforcing
plate to secure insert locks having double cylinder
lock inserts. This plate ls placed in an in-ternal
recess provided in a wooden door and is permanently
connec-ted to the lock cover. This rotary lock
cylinder is ~lso secured, in generally known manner
by means of a Elange screw. The dlsadvantage is that
the plate woulcl be very difficult to fit and would
not provide sufficient protec-tion against a forcible
entry. Here again, the rotary lock cylinder is
weakened by the threaded bore provided for the flange
screw. The latter is needed in this particular
situa-tion since it serves to draw the cylinder
against the edges of the cylinder cut out provided in
the lock case and thus enables to mount the cylinder.
In the case of a lock with a very long flange screw,
the latter is poorly guided in the lock and does not
secure it even if i-t is screwed very thightly. The
cylinder is easily displaced by slamming the door or
as a result of a faulty operation. If the cylinder

is displaced, the catch rubs against the lock plate
and considerable force is required to turn the key
and open the lock. The cylinder must be recentered
and adjusted. It is known that there are many doors
in which the lock and the pressure fitting provided
with a long shield is not properly fitted and can
never be fixed by tightening -the flange screw.
It is an object of the present invention to
provide a device of the type mentioned above which
will overcome the aforementioned disadvantages and
which, in spite of this can easily be mounted and
produced.
It is also an object of the present
invention to provide a lock case and a rotary lock
cylinder which are particularly suitable for this
device.
These and other objects according to the
invention may be achieved by providing a device for
securing a rotary lock cylinder which is inserted
through a loc]c case in which a first hard metal
memher surrounds the rotary loc]c cylinder outside a
door, wherein the hard metal member rests against the
lock case to be secured thereto, means enabllng said
hard metal member to cover at least in part the front
of said rotary lock cylinder in relation to said lock
case; the device also comprising a second hard metal
member mounted inside -the door and surrounding the
internal section of the rotary lock cylinder.
Tests hava shown that the first hard metal
member can easily pro~ect from the fitting and still
cannot be torn out. This eleminates the need for
costly long shields and for the flange screw and the
weaknesses they cause in the lock cylinder are
thereby avoided. In spite of this, correct and

permanent centering of the cylinder lock is assured.
Forcing or drilling out the lock cylinder are largely
prevented.
In order to prevent the rotor from being
forced through, the first hard metal member may
comprise a rotatable cover provided with a slot for
inserting a key therein, mounted in an opening in
front of a rotor. The cover is supported on the lock
case by means of a slit sleeve.
A simple way of obtaining a continuous
cen-tering of the rotary lock cylinder and of securing
it axially in the lock case, is to provide a
centering element which engages the lock cylinder and
is supported on the lock case by means of an
adjusting screw.
Accorcling to another embodiment of -the
invention, the Gpening in the lock case through which
the rotary lock cylinder is inserted, is made wide
enough in the upper area to permit lock cylinders of
cdifferent siæes to be inserted therein. This has the
advantage that rotary lock cylinders of different
sizes may be used, thus greatly simplyfing stock
]ceeping.
Another advantage of the device according
to the invention is that the rotary lock cylinder
need no longer be coloured since it is wholly or
partly covered by a bushing or bushings.
In accordance with another particularly
advantageous embodiment of the invention there is
provided a Swiss type of rotary lock cylinder wherein
the cylinder holder is reinforced with an axially
running screw which projects at both ends of the
cylinder holder and is used to axially align the
rotary lock cyiinder.

The inven-tion will be better illus-trated
with reference to the annexed drawings, which are not
intended to limit the scope of -the present invention
and in which,

a door panel provided with an insert lock and a
device according to the invention,

Fig. 2 is an exploded view of the device
illustrated in Figs. la and lb, according to the
invention;

variants of the invention;

Fig. la shows a door 24 into which an
insert lock 45 is inserted in known manner. Whereas
the internal arrangement of this lock is con-
ventional, according -to Fig. 5 face plate SO differs
in that no bore is needed for a flange screw disposed
below the latch 53. A double rotary lock cylinder 1
is inserted into a through hole 46. The shape of the
through hole mus-t match that of the lock cylinder and
it is preferably wide enough to accomodate lock
cylinders of different shapes. The lock cylinder
comprises in known manner, between an outer
cylindrical part 3 and an inner cylindrical part 4, a
catch 2 by means of which the latch may be pushed in
the lock case.

A solid sleeve 8, preferably made of
hardened steel, is placed over outer cylindrical part
3. The sleeve 8 comprises a recess 52 into which a
sleeve 13, also made of hardened steel, is inser-ted.
Sleeve 13 is adapted to rotate in recess 52 and
comprises a slo-t 13a and a hole 55 designed in such a
manner that cylindrical part 3 may be inserted into
sleeve 13 with little play. The front ace of sleeve
8 comprises, immediately in front of rotor 7a, a
through hole 12 into which a cover 14, made of
hardened steel, is rotatably inserted from the rear
side. Cover 14 is supported by sleeve 13 on lock
case 45 and comprises a slot 15 through which a flat
key may be Lnserted. Sleeve 13 and recess 52 are
designed in such a manner that cylinder 1 is guided,
with little play, along the entire length of the
projecting part.
Two threaded pins 26 are screwed into
sleeve 8 and extend :Ln through holes 33 provided in
the lock case. The threaded pins 26 carry nuts 27 at
their free ends, which enable the sleeve to be pulled
toward lock case 45 and to be fixedly secured
thereto. Lock case 45 is relatively thin and one or
more plates 18 are placed between it and sleeve 8.
Furthermore, a pin 43 is pressed into the upper part
oE sleeve 8 and engages in a hole 44 provided in lock
case 45, and in intermediate plates 18. Screws 26
and inserted rotary lock cylinder 1, in combination
with pin 43 prevent sleeve 8 from being moved.
A second sleeve 9 which also bears against
lock case 45, if necessary by means of a plate 18
disposed -therebetween, is mounted inside door 24.
Except for the opening 11, the front of the second
sleeve 9 covers cylindrical part 4. Sleeve 9 also
comprises a recess 56 which corresponds to the shape
of outer cylindrical part 4. This cylindrical part 4

is guided in recess 56. Two blind holes 28
accomodate nuts 27 and pins 26. Sleeve 9 ensures
tha-t lock cylinder 1 is properly guided and that
sleeve 8 cannot be moved by the use of force.
Opening 11 usually has no cover and the key can
therefore be inserted here directly into rotor 7 b.
During the assembly of the device, the
ro-tary lock cylinder 1 can be centered axially so as
to enable catch 2 to be moved in lock case 45 without
the use of clamps or fittings. For this purpose,
clamping elements 16 and 17 are inserted into sleeves
8 and 9. They bear, at the bottom, against cylinder
channel 5 and by means of cams 21 and 22 they are
engaged in grooves 6a and 6b provided in lock
cyllnder 1. Clamping elements 16, 17 have threaded
holes Eormed thereln into which screws 19,20 are
inserted. By turning screws 19,20, lock cylinder 1
may be displaced axially and continuously. Openings
35 arld 42 in sleeves 9 and 8 provide access to screws
20 and 19 after the sleeves have been mounted. Once
lock cyl;nder 1 has been centered, a plug 41 and a
screw 23 are inserted. The lock cylinder is fixedly
secured in lock case 45.
Figures 3 and 4 show variants of the
ad~usting device for a rotary lock cylinder la, lb of
the Swiss type. Pocket 49 of loc]c cylinder la
carries a continuous steel screw 47 which outwardly
extends a-t both ends thereof. Sleeves 48, with
continuous threaded holes, are screwed to screw 47.
30 Screws 59 and 61, which extend through sleeves 8 and
9, are screwed from the outside into sleeves 48. By
turning screws 59 and 61, lock cylinder la can be
moved continuously in either direction. It is
essential that cylinder pocket 49 be substantially
reinforced with screw 47. In the design according to
Fig. 4, sleeves 64 are screwed to a similarly

continuous screw 63, the said sl.eeves being in turn
secured to clamping elements 49 by means of groove
65,66 and tongues 67,68. Pins, not shown, are
screwed into con-tinuous threaded holes 57 provided in
clamping elements 49. As indicated hereinbefore,
these pins are used to center and ensure a proper
location for cylinder 1.
During assembly, rotary lock cylinder 1 is
first inserted into lock case 45 and bushings 18 are
provided if necessary. Clamping element 16 is then
inserted and -this is followed by sleeve 8, with
inserted cover 14 and sleeve 13. Bushing 18 is
secured to lock case 45 with nuts 27. Clamping
element 17 is then applied to cylindrical part 4
after which sleeve 9 is mounted. Lock cylinder 1 is
centered as described hereinbefore, hole 42 is closed
with plug 41, and sleeve 9 is secured with screw 23.
The cylinders illustrated in F'igures 3 and 4 are
assembled in the same way, except that hole 70
provided in sleeve 13 is eccentric to correspond to
the position oE the rotor.
In the design shown in Figures 6 to 7b, -the
hard metal member to be mounted inside the door
consists of a base 8~ with a continuous recess 89
into which the inner section of rotary lock cyl'inder
1 is inserted. Access to centering element 17 is
rnade poss.ible through this recess 89. In addi-tion to
recess 89, the base 84 is p'rovided with four
continuous holes 90 through which pins 85 extend.
These pins are screwed, at the inner end, into hard
metal member 8. Each pin 85 lies with its wide head
against a step 91, thus drawing the hard metal member
8 and the base 81 firmly to the lock case. The heads
of pins 85 ca.rry cruciform slots 81 into whlch pins
80 may be inserted in pairs, thus preventing pins 85
from coming loose during an attempted break in.

During assembly, transverse pins 80 are placed half
depth in recesses 87, they are pushed into slots 81
of the tigh-tening pins 85 and are then bent into a
recess 88 a-t the free end thereof. Slots 81 provided
in pin 85 are tapered outwardly so that the
transverse pins 80 cannot fall out in axial direction
wi-th respec-t to pinds 85. A rod like, stepped
spacing elemen-t 82 is arranged below the cylinder
pocket and each end is engaged in a hole 83 provided
either in hard metal member 8 or in base 84. Spacing
element 82 is provided in the case of lock cases in
which elements 8 and 84 project -therebeyond a-t the
bot-tom. The spacing element also stabillzes elements
8 and 9 and ensures that, even in lock cases of this
kind, there is no way in which elements 8 and 9 can
be moved or loosened in relation to -the lock cases.
Base 84 has a cover 92 which is secured by
means of screws 26 to base 84 and lock cyl.inder 1.
Spacing discs, not shown, may be arranged between
cove.r 92 and base 84.
The dev:ice described above ~or securing a
rotary lock cylinder can therefore be centered
accurately without using a flange screw. The lock is
easily operated and ou-tstanding protection is
provided against brutal break in me-thods such as
twisting off, tearing out and core pulling.
