This invention rslates to a portable storage shed
con6truction and relates particularly to an improved sliding
door and locking mechanism co~bination ~or such a shed. The
constructlon is particularly ~uited to use on heavy duty
doors vulnerable to vandalism or hreak-in either on
temporary or portable buildings, such as building site sheds
or offic~s. Such doors are generally hung by appropriate
rollers and fittings from an appropriate channel section
mounted above the doorway to be closed such that the door
move~ parallel to the doorway to either ope~ or close the
doorway as desired. The bottom edge may also run in a
channel or between gu~des to assist in proper movement o
the door betwaen the open and closed positions. Such doors
are, when secured from the outside, usually locked by means
of a simple latch and padlock combination. It is often
possible to force such doors open either by breaking the
latch or padlock or by forcing the door away from the
doorway it is intended to secure by swinging th~ door about
the axi~ of the channel from which it is suspended.
~ It is an object of this invention to overcome or
reduce some or all of the disadvantages of such known door
constructions.
The present invention therefore provides a portable
storage shed having at least one wall including a doorway
alternatively open or closed by a sliding door movable in a
dlrection parallel to said doorway, in which said door has
leading and trailing frame portions attached to facing
material for said door, said leading frame portion being
adaptad to b~ rsceived in a channel in a fir~t fram~ m~mber
~djacent one slde of said doorway when said door is closed
and ~aid trailing edge of said door including a protruding
flange member adapted to engage with a channel in a second
frame member adjacent the other side o~ said doorway when
said door is closed such that lateral movement of said door
away from said wall is prevented, and in which said door
includes locking means which comprises a lock member mounted

on said door or said leadin~ frame member which projects
forwardly of the door and protrudes, when the door is
closed, through a slot in a wall of the building to enable
attachment of a locking means, said locking means being
protected by means of a cover mounted on the outside of
said wall covering said loc~ing means which permits access
to the locking means for unlocking, but which substantially
prevents forcing of the locking means.
One preferred form of portable storage shed
construction will now be described with reference to the
accompanying drawings in which:-
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portable storage
shed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a partial cross sectional plan view of the
shed of Figure 1 in the direction 1-1;
Figure 3 is a partial cross sectional plan view
similar to Figure 2 showing an alternative embodiment in
accordance with the invention; and
Figure 4 shows a further embodiment of the in~ention
in plan view similar to Figure 2.
The building 10 is shown as a portable office or store
which can be transported from site to site as required and
is conveniently referred to as a shed. The shed comprises
side walls 11, 12 roof 13, front wall 14, rear wall 15 (not
clearly shown) and sliding door 1~. The shed is
conveniently mounted on foundation 17. The door 16 is
mounted or suspended at the top in a conventional manner in
door track 18 comprising appropriate channel and runner
means not shown in detail, and at the bottom may run in
bottom track 19. The doorway 2D is bounded by the top and
bottom tracks 18 and 19 and pillars 21 and 22. The door
comprises door panel 23 mounted on a door frame comprisiny
side members 24 and 25 and similar top and bottom members
(not shown). The pillars and the door frame members are of
substantially square cross section steel tube and the door
panel is of steel plate. The door panel is mounted on the
frame by any convenient means such as welding/ rivetting or
bolting.

The side wall 11 of the shed extends forwardly beyond
the plane of the doorway 20 and the plane of the door 16
and is formed with a flange 26 to shield and contain side
member 24 of the door 16 when the door is closed. The
flange serves to deter tampering and forcing of the door
and also serves to restric~ lateral or sideways movement of
the door in the direction of arrow A at outer end 27 of the
door. Mounted on inner door pillar 22 as shown in Figure 2
is a substantially L-shaped flange 28 which pro~rudes into
slot 29 in inner door side member 25. Such flange and slot
combination serves to restrict movement of the inner door
end 30 in the direction of arrow B and additionally deter
or th~art unauthorised entry to the shed when the shed door
is clo~ed and locked.
Referring to Figure 3 in which like numbers refer to
like parts, the inner door end 25 is prevented from lateral
movement in the direction of arrow B by provision of a
further square channel member 31 mounted outside the front
wall 14 and opposite pillar 22. The further member is of
such a length so as not to interfere with the opening and
closing of the door and includes projection 32 e~tending
towards and into appropriate slot 29 in the side frame
member 25 of the door.
The locking means for the door comprise lock member 33
2S which passes through lock slot 34 in side wall 11 and
adapted to be secured by a padlock (not shown) via hole 35.
The lock member 33 and padlock are protected from damage,
tampering or forcing when the door is closed and locked by
means of lock cover 36. The cover is of steel construction
and together with the side wall 11 to which it is fixed
(e.g., by welding) protects the locking means.
Referring to Figure 4, there is shown a further
embodiment of the sliding door construction in accordance
with the invention. The door 40 is mounted for slidable
operation to alternatively close and open doorway 41. The
door includes front or leading frame member 42, door panel
43 and rear or trailing frame member 44 or substantially U-
shaped cross section adapted to engage with U-shaped cross

section door ~rame member 45 to prevent lateral movement
(in the direction of arrow A) of the doox when the door is
in the closed position as is shown in the drawings. This
lateral movement is also prevented by provision of flange
46 on side wall 47 of the shed. As previously, the leading
door frame member 42 includes a locking member 48 which
passes through lock slot 43. Padlock or other locking
means (not shown) is then secured through bore 50 in
locking member 48. ~he various par~s including front wall
51 of the shed may be assembled as is known in the ark and
be fixed together as necessary by bolts, rivets or, for
example, by welds 52, shown by way of example only.
The shed, as with the parts sp0cifically described,
may be manufactured from appropriate steel or aluminium
components or any other suitable metal or alloy or other
mat4rial suitable for the purpose. The shed preferably
includes means for attaching the shed to a crane to enable
ease of movement and tran~port of the shed from site to
site as and when desired.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the in~ention
described pxovides addîtional security for portable
buildings and that many modifications or improvemenks may
be made to the invention described without departing from
the spirit thereof.
