Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

Claim lst In a self-binder, a series of revolving forks carried on a shaft supported on ground wheels and flexibly connected to the main frame, in combination with a shaft carrying similar forks but journalled on the main frame and geared with the ground wheel shaft so that the shafts shall revolve in opposite directions. 2nd. In a self binder, a series of circular revolving forks carried on the shafts A B C and D, arranged in the frame of the machine one ahove the other and made to revolve in opposite directions so that the grain raised from the ground by the revolving forks A, will be taken un by the forks on B, end so on till the grain reaches the forks on D. which forks throw the grain onto the travelling belts for conveying it to the binding mechanism, in combination with the fenders V, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 3rd. In a binding machine in which a series of travelling belts convey the grain from the elevating forks to the binding mechanism, the combination of the fenders V, arranged between the belts for the purpose of supporting the grain, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 4th. In a binding machine in which a series of travelling belts convey the grain from the elevating forks to the binding mechanism, a series of arms extending between the belts all connected to the same shaft operated by a foot lever, in combination with a series of crooked fingers extending over the end of the travelling belts and operated by the said foot lever so that by pressing down the said foot lever, the arms are raised above the travelling belts and the crooked fingers are simultaneously brought down so as to arrest the movement of the grain into the grain receptacle. 5th. In a binding machine, in which the movement of the grain into the grain receptacle is arrested by the arms h, and fingers m as specified, the combination of a weighted catch arranged to hold the said arms and fingers in position during the knotting operation, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 6th. In a binding machine in which the binding mechanism is driven from a shaft driven by and deriving a continuous motion from the main carrying wheels of the machine, a bevelled spur-wheel held by and revolving loosely on the said driving shaft M, and geering with a bevel spur-wheel keyed to a shaft Z, running at right angles to it, in combination with mechanism arranged to connect the spur-wheels to the shaft and automatically release it after making one revolution. 7th. In a binding machine, in which the band for binding the sheaf is taken from the grain within the grain receptacle, a head for grasping the band carried on a frame below the grain receptacle, in combination with the mechanism arranged, to carry the head to the end of the grain pause for an instant at that point and then return to its initial position, the said motion being performed during one revolution of the binding mechanism, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 8th. In a binding machine, in which the band for binding the sheaf is taken from the grain within the grain receptacle, the head for that purpose being carried on a frame below the grain receptacle. the combination of mechanism arranged to raise the head at the end of the sheaf and to drop down when the grain to form the band has been grasped by the head, as specified. 9th. In a binding machine in which the band for binding the sheaf is taken from the grain within the grain receptacle by a travelling head, a reciprocating triangular frame set below the grain receptacle and arranged to divide the strand taken from the grain, in combination with mechanism arranged to revolve the head in order to twist the ends of the strands together. 10th. In a binding machine, in which the band for binding the sheaf is taken from the grain within the grain receptacle by a travelling head mechanism for tilting the head so as to throw the portion of it which grasps the band against the sheaf, in combination with mechanism arranged to tuck in the end of the band, as specified. llth. In a binding machine in which the band for binding the sheaf is taken from the grain within the grain receptacle by mechanism arranged to grasp a strand, divide it into two bands and to twist together the ends of the band below the grain, the combination or two curved and expanding arms arranged to descend over the sheaf, grasp the band on either side thereof, reascend carrying the bands with it and twisting them together on the top side.
