An improved trap apparatus for the inlet end of
a drainage pipe leading from a side wall of an enclosure
adapted to hold a body of water which runs through said
pipe, said pipe having a sleeve adapted to fit in the
inlet end of a drainage pipe extending from a side wall
of a water holding enclosure, improvement comprising a
hood slideably and pivotably mounted to the sleeve, said
hood extending downwardly to a level below the sleeve and
said inlet end of the drainage pipe and having an
entrance at said level, said hood having means for
accessing said drainage pipe, wherein said hood can be
slided and tilted away from said sleeve to be positioned
adjacent to said side wall.

urgeur amélioré, à monter à l'entrée d'une canalisation d'évacuation reliée à la paroi d'une enveloppe destinée à retenir une masse d'eau qui doit circuler dans ladite canalisation; cette dernière comporte un manchon emboîté dans l'extrémité d'entrée et muni d'un capuchon glissant et pivotant, se prolongeant jusqu'au-dessous du manchon et de l'entrée de la canalisation et comportant, à ce niveau, un orifice permettant d'accéder à la canalisation d'évacuation; le capuchon peut être glissé et positionné du côté de la paroi de l'enveloppe, dégageant ainsi le manchon.

The embodiments of the invention in which an
exclusive privilege or property is claimed are defined as
follows:
1. An improved trap apparatus for the inlet
end of a drainage pipe leading from a side wall of an
enclosure adapted to hold a body of water which runs
through said pipe, said pipe having a sleeve adapted to
fit in the inlet end of a drainage pipe extending from a
side wall of a water holding enclosure, improvement
comprising:
a hood slideably and pivotably mounted to the
sleeve, said hood extending downwardly to a level below
the sleeve and said inlet end of the drainage pipe and
having an entrance at said level, said hood having means
for accessing said drainage pipe, wherein said hood can
be slided and tilted away from said sleeve to be
positioned adjacent to said side wall.
2. An improved trap apparatus as defined in
claim 1 wherein said hood is slideably and pivotably
mounted to the sleeve by means of a pair of extensions
secured to said sleeve and having retaining channels
through which securing means attached to said hood can
slide therethrough.
3. An improved trap apparatus as defined in
claim 2 wherein said extensions are spot welded to the
sleeve in said hood and supported to said extensions by

means of a carriage bolt and wing nut arrangement.
4. An improved trap apparatus as defined in
claim 3 wherein said hood includes a pair of vertical
channels to receive said carriage bolt and wing nut
arrangement.
5. An improved trap apparatus as defined in
claim 1 wherein said means of accessing said drainage
pipe comprises a rear access plate pivotably mounted to a
rear wall of said hood.
6. An improved trap apparatus as defined in
claim 5 wherein said access plate is pivotably mounted
above a rivet holding said plate to the rear wall of said
hood.
7. An improved trap apparatus as defined in
claim 6 wherein said rear access plate is held against a
L-shaped clamp positioned opposite said pivot.

PIVOTABLE TRAP APPARATUS FOR DRAINAGE PIPES
This invention relates to apparatus for the
inlet ends of drainage pipes leading from enclosures such
as street catch basins, spetic tanks and the like.
A trap apparatus for drainage pipes is
disclosed in Canadian Patent Serial No. 717,806 which is
issued to the applicant on September 14, 1g65.
This trap apparatus is comprised of a substan-
tially horizontal sleeve adapted to fit in the inlet end
of drainage pipe extending from a sidewall of a water
holding enclosure. This sleeve has an inner end pro-
jecting into the enclosure. A hood is connected to the
sleeve and encloses the sleeve's inner end. This hood
extends downwardly to a level below the sleeve and the
inlet end of the drainage pipe and has an entrance at
this level. Water can thereby flow through the hood
entrance and out of the enclosure to the drainage pipe
while debri~ floating on the water is kept by the hood
from reaching the drainage pipe.
In order to prevent the trap apparatus from
being vibrated out of the drainage pipe, the sleeve was
given some resiliency to cause the sleeve to bind in the
drainage pipe and therefore make it more difficult to
remove the apparatus from the pipe. Accordingly, if

access to the drainage pipe was required, removal of the
apparatus would tend to be difficult since it was
necessary to contract the sleeve in a radial direction
and then to pull it straight out from the pipe.
In addition, in some instances the drainage pipe
extends away from the basin at a lateral angle relative
to the wall of the catch basin or downwardly therefrom.
In order to fit the trap apparatus properly, a series of
score lines were provided to permit pieces of material
defined by these score lines to be removed from the side
walls of the trap apparatus. This would permit the trap
apparatus to bear against the wall of the catch basin
with the sleeve inclined downwardly in the pipe. This is
fairly awkward since the user has to manually cut these
pieceis of material before installation and thereby
increases the installation time and also increases the
likelihood of injury since sharp edges are created around
the hood. This also increased the likeli~ood of knowing
the trap apparatus improperly installed.
There is therefore a requirement for an improved
trap apparatus for drainage pipes able to provide access
to the drainage pipe as well as permit an easy and simple
way of adjusting the trap apparatus against the catch
basin wall when a downwardly inclined drainage pipe is
used.
It is therefore an object of the present inven-

tion to provide an improved trap apparatus which provides
means for accessing the drainage pipe of a catch basin.
Another object of the present invention is to
provide an improved trap apparatus having a hood and
sleeve which are pivotable relative to one another such
that the trap apparatus can be adjusted to fit against
the wall of the catch basin in instances where the
drainage pipe extends away from the catch basin at
lateral angles relative to the catch basin.
Accordingly, an aspect of the present invention -
is to provide an improved trap apparatus for the inlet
end of a drainage pipe leading from a side wall of an
enclosure adapted to hold a body of water which runs
through said pipe, said trap having a sleeve adapted to
fit in the inlet end of a drainage pipe extending from a
side wall of a water holding enclosure, the improvement
comprising:
a hood slideably and pivotably mounted to the
sleeve, said hood extending downwardly to a level below
the sleeve and said inlet end of the drainage pipe and
having an entrance at said level, said hood having means
for accessing said drainage pipe and wherein said hood
can be slided and tilted away from said sleeve to be
positioned adjacent said side wall.

Figure 1 is a side view of the improved trap
apparatus as secured to a side wall of a catch basin;
Figure 2 is a front view thereof;
Figure 3 is an exploded view of the improved
catch basin apparatus.
Referring to Figure 1, we have shown the
improved trap apparatus 10 mounted on a side wall 11 of a
catch basin. In this embodiment the drainage pipe 13 is
basically horizontal and the side wall 11 of the catch
basin lies perpendicular to the drainage pipe.
Referring now to Figures 1, 2 and 3, the
improved trap appartus is comprised of a radially expan-
sible sleeve 12 which is adapted to be contracted and
inserted into the inlet end of the drainage pipe 13. In
the preferred form of the invention, the sleeve is formed
of a springy metal, such as aluminum galvanized iron, or
a suitable plastic material, and is made expandable by a
slit 14 which extends longitudinally thereof. The slit
of the sleeve makes it possible to squeeze the sleeve
down to a diameter less than its normal diameter so that
it can easily be inserted into pipe 13. When th~ sleeve
is released, its springs back towards its normal size, at
which time it snugly fits into the pipe, as clearly shown
in Figure 1.

inner end 16 of the sleeve. The hood supports 15 are
spot welded at 17 to the inner end oP the sleeve 12.
Hood supports 15 also include channels 18 along which can
slide a carrying bolt and wing nut arrangement 19 which
is also inserted through a vertical channel 20 on side
wall 22 of hood 21.
In order to mount trap apparatus 10 onto wall
11, sleeve 12 is pulled apart from hood 21 as depicted by
the phantom lines. Sleeve 12 is then compressed to
reduce the diameter thereof and then inserted into pipe
13 and released. Sleeve 12 will tend to spring back to
its normal size and thereby engages the inner surface of
pipe 13 and firmly hold the apparatus then in position.
Hood 21 is then adjusted such that the side edges 23
bears evenly against the side wall 11 of the catch basin.
Wlng nuts 19 are then rotated to secure hood 21 in posi~
tion.
Accordingly, trap apparatus 10 can be adjusted
to any variation of inclination that drainage pipe 13 can
have with respect to the side wall 11 of the catch basin.
In Figure 1, an inclined drainage pipe has been
shown in phantom lines. Hood 21 as shown in Figure 1
include means for accessing the drainage pipe without
having to remove the trap apparatus from the side wall of
the catch basin. More specifically, a rear excess plate
24 is pivotably mounted about a rivet point 25 and held

against an L-shaped clamp 26. A rear support plate 27 is
riveted to side walls 22 of hood 21 ~y means of a series
of rivets 28. Rear access plat~ 24 can be pivoted about
rivet point 25 as is shown by the phantom lines.
Rear access plate 24 can be pivoted by means of
a cable lowered into the catch basin, the cable being
maneuvered to fit under hook 29 of rear access plate 24.
