Claims
I claim:
1. The process for transporting ground
coffee within a brewing system using coffee slurry
comprising the steps of:
a. forming a coffee and water
slurry;
b. transporting said slurried
coffee to a brewing chamber for coffee brewing;

PATENT APP~ICATION OF
HOWARD W. SEL~Y. III
FOR
COFFEE SLURRY PROCESS
Back~round o~ the Invention
Field of Invention
! .: :. .:..'
This invention relates generally to
automatlc cof~ee brewing and extraction processes and
specifically to a process that utilizes a slurried
coffee mixture.
,
Description o~ Prior Art
Conventional coffee brewing systems, whether
espresso or otherwise, use ground coffee beans which
are put in a filter device. Water is introduced into
the ground coffee beans to make coffeQ. After
brewing or extraction i9 complete, the coffee grounds
~ 20 are disposed of~
;~ Some of these systems of~er varlous degrees
;~ of automation from grlnding the co~ee beans to
disposing o~ the coffee yrounds. Such systems have
the drawbacks of being expensive and complicated in
their implementation as well as adversely a~fecting
the taste of the resulting coffee.
It would be deslrable to have a process by
which the transport of the ground coffee through a
coffee brewing system was automated but which system ~-
~ 30 ls e~ective, low cost and simple, and which does not
;~ adversely affect the quality of the brewed coffee. ~; :
In view of the ~oregolng, it is an ob~ect Or :
thls invention to provide a process by whlch ground
: ~: ~ . ,;. ,

-2- 2018361 - ~
coffee beans are moved throughout a coffee brewing ~;
system.
It is a further object o~ this invention to
provide a transport process that does not adversely
5 af~ect the quality of the brewed coffee.
It is a further object of this invention to
provide a process by which the ground co~fee beans
can be disposed o~ after brewing.
Summary of the Invention ;
: ,
These and other objects of the invention are
accomplished in accordance with the principles o~ the ~;~
invention by proces~ through which water is
i~troduced into the ground coffee beans to create a ``
coffee ~lurry which is used and the means to
transport the ground coffee throughout a coffee
~ brewing system.
J The slurried ground coffee beans are ~ ;
transported to the coffee brewing chamber. Once
brewing is complete, the co~ee grounds can be
20 transported out o~ the brewing chamber for disposal.
The advantage o~ the slurry process is that
the co~fee beans are not ground until ~ust before
brewing. In addition, the slurry process supports a
variety o~ br~wing techniques including drip-brew and
25 espresso extraction.
Further ~eatures o~ the invention, its
n~turo and various advantages will be more apparent
from the accompanying drawings and the ~ollowing
detAlled description o~ the invention.
30 Detailed Description o~ the Invention
The ~irst phase o~ the process according to
the invention is the introduction o~ water into ~;
ground co~fee beans. The co~ee beans are ground in
a conventional fashion and are ground to the

appropriate ground size ~or the brewlng process being
used. Introduction of water into the ground co~fee
creatas a coffee slurry solution which suspends the
ground coffee enabling it to be easily transported. ~ ;
The next phase o~ the process is to
transport the ground co~fee to a coffe~ brewing
chamber. The ground coffee beans are carried in the
slurry and are deposited in the brewing chamber.
Conventional co~ee brewing can then take place.
lo In the oase o~ a drip-brewing system, ¦
additional water 1~ ~ntroduced into the brewing
chamber. In the case o~ an extractlon process, such
as espresso co~ee, the water lntroduced will be
under pressure.
Once brewing or extraction ls complete, the
slurried co~fee grounds are transported out o~ the
brewing chamber ~or disposal.
