English Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
The invention concerns a coating device with a
doctor element for smoothing and dosing the coating
mixture and with a chamber for receiving fresh
coating mixture, said chamber extending along a
support beam of the coating device and having in
both cases a length which essentially equals the
length of the doctor element, with a feed channel of
same length provided which feeds the coating mixture
to an applicator space located at the web or at a
backing roll (C) serving to carry such web. Within
the channel there are provided a spoiler bar aligned
parallel to the longitudinal direction of the doctor
element, or a row of butting spoiler bars with ribs
and slots alternating in the direction of this
longitudinal extension, or with projections which in
or bar with a continuous row of holes, the spoiler
bars or projections reducing the channel cross
section before or after the bar or projections by at
least 30% of the channel cross section.

Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. A coating device, comprising: a support
beam, a doctor element for smoothing and dosing the
coating mixture, said doctor element extending along
said support beam, a chamber for receiving fresh
coating mixture, a feed channel for feeding the
coating mixture to an applicator space located at
one of a web or a backing roll for carrying the web,
said chamber, support beam and feed channel each
having a length essentially equal to the length of
the doctor element, and at least one spoiler bar
provided within said feed channel, said spoiler bar
aligned parallel to the longitudinal direction of
the doctor element and including a plurality of
openings, said spoiler bar reducing the channel
cross section before or after the bar by at least
30% of the channel cross section.
2. The coating device of claim 1, wherein
said at least one spoiler bar comprises a plurality
of abutting spoiler bars and said openings are
formed by ribs and slots in said spoiler bars
alternating in the longitudinal direction of said
doctor element.
3. The coating device according to claim 2,
wherein said spoiler bars differ from one another by
the shape and/or size of said ribs and slots.
4. The coating device according to claim 2,
wherein said feed channel defines a remaining free
passage cross section, said ribs protruding into
said remaining free passage cross section and
having an expanse in the direction of the channel
width of 30 to 45% of the average width of the
channel, and width between 0.85 and 1.45 times the
slot width measured in the longitudinal direction of
the doctor element on the free ends of the slots.

8
5. The coating device according to claim 2,
wherein said slots have an essentially continuous
wide shape.
6. The coating device according to claim 2,
wherein said slots are rounded at their bottom
7. The coating device according to claim 2,
wherein said slots are triangular.
8. The coating device according to claim 2,
wherein the edge of the ribs nearest the surface to
be coated is maximally 110 mm distant from the
surface to be coated.
9. The coating device of claim 1, wherein
said openings are formed by a plurality of projec-
tions.
10. The coating device according to claim 9,
wherein said projections protrude into the remaining
free passage cross section of the channel, said
projections defining corresponding spaces there-
between having a width between 25 and 40% of the
normal, average width of the channel.
11. The coating device of claim 1, wherein
said openings are formed by a continuous row of
holes formed in said spoiler bar.
12. The coating device according to claim 11,
wherein said holes are round.
13. The coating device according to claim 1,
wherein the shape of said openings vary locally in
design to thereby vary the resistance created by the
ribs.
14. The coating device according to claim 1,
wherein said at least one spoiler bar is adapted to
be placed in a longitudinal slot of the coating
device.
