English Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A hammer wrench includes an elongate body having a first
end and a second end. An anvil is positioned at the first end
of the body, whereby by striking the anvil a force is exerted
upon the body. A wrench head is positioned at the second end
of the body having a front and a back. The front of the wrench
head has a socket to engage a rotatable fastener. The back of
the wrench head has a coupling adapted to receive an elongate
handle whereby support is provided to safely maintain the
wrench head in position while the anvil is being struck.

Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE PROPERTY
OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A hammer wrench, comprising:
a. an elongate body having a first end and a second end;
b. an anvil at the first end of the body, whereby by
striking the anvil a force is exerted upon the body; and
c. a wrench head at the second end of the body having a
front and a back, the front having means to engage a rotatable
fastener, the back having a coupling adapted to receive an
elongate handle whereby support is provided to safely maintain
the wrench head in position while the anvil is being struck;
2. A method of safely maintaining a wrench head of a hammer
wrench in position while an anvil of the hammer wrench is
struck, comprising the step of:
securing to a back of a wrench head a coupling adapted to
receive an elongate handle whereby support is provided to
safely maintain the wrench head in position while the anvil is
being struck.

Description

Note: Descriptions are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

-
5 B~CKGROU~D OF T~ I3~ENTIOI~
A hammer wrench is a tool used to attempt to loosen nuts
when the nuts cannot be removed by any other means. It is also
~, used to tighten nuts on machinery when it is difficult to get
lU enough torque to withstand pressure generated when the
machinery is in operation. It consists of an elongatP body
with a wrench head at one endO The wrench head is placed into
engagement with the nut. At the other end of the body is
positioned an anvil. By striking the anvil a rotational force ~ ;
is exerted upon the body.
,' ' :
A hammer wrench is a relatively dangerous tool to work
with. If the hammer wrench should move while a blow is being
delivered, the blow can become misdirected. Such m~sdirected
blows can strike the worker~ For this reason, a pair of
workers usually is assigned to use the hiammer wrench. One -
worker is charged with the duty of striking the anvil. The
other worker i5 charged with the duty of maintaining the hammer
wrench in position. Unfortunately, the worker charged with the
duty of maintaining the hammer wrench in position is always in
danger of being struck in the arms and upper body by a blow
which glances off the hammer wrench~ It i5 difficult to strike
the anvil with force while maintaining control.
UMMARY OF T~ I~VE~TION
"
What is reguired is a hammer wrench that incorporates in
its design a method of safely maintaining a wrench head in
position while an anvil is struck.
According to this aspect of the invention there is
provided a harmner wrench which includes an elongate body having
a first end and a second end. An anvil is positioned at the

first end of the body, whereby by striking the an~il a force
~`is exerted upon the body. A wren~h head is positioned at the
¦second end of the body having a ~ront and a back. The ~ront
of the wrench head has means to engage a rotatable fastener.
;~5 The back of the wrench head has a coupling adapted to receive
an elongate handle whereby support is provided to safely
maintain the wrench head in position while the anvil is being
struck.
10According to another aspect of the invention there is
provided a method of safely maintaining a wrench head of a
hammer wrench in position while an anvil of the hammer wrench
is struck. This method includes the step of securing to a back
of a wrench head a coupling adapted to receive an elongate
handle whereby support is provided to safely maintain the
wrench head in position while the anvil is being stxuck.

These and other features of the invention will become more
apparent from the following description in which re~erence is
made to the appended drawings, wherein:
FI~U~E 1 is side elevation view in longitudinal section
of a hammer wrench constructed in acc:ordance with the teachings
o~ the present invention.

The preferred embodiment, a hammer wrench generally ~-
identified by reference numeral 10, will now be described with
reference to FI~URE 1.
~ 35Hammer wrench 10 includes an elongate body 12 having a
`i;, first end 14 and a second end 16. An anvil 18 is positioned
;1 at ~irst end 14 of body 12. A wrench head 20 is positioned at

second end 16 oiiii body 12. Wrench head 20 has a front 22 and
~ a back 24. Front 22 has a socket 26 which serves as means to
"li engage a rotatable iiiiiastener. Back 24 has a coupling 28 adapted
J to receive an elongate handle 30.
The method of use and operation of hammer wrench 10 will
now be described with reference to FIGURE 1. The method of
includes the single step of positioning on back 24 of wrench
head 20 coupling 28. Coupling 28 receiv~s elongate handle 30.
10 By applying pressure by means of elongate handle 30 one worker
can provide support to maintain wrench head 20 in position
while anvil 18 is being st~uck by a co-worker. The use of
elongate handle 30 positions the workers arms and upper body
at a sufficient distance from body 12 so as to be safe from any
15 glancing blow to anvil 18.
.~
It will be apparent to one skilled in the art that hammer
wrench 10 ~afely maintains wrench head 20 in position while
anvil 18 is struck. It will also be apparent ko one skilled
20 in the art that there are variations which may be made to the
illustrated embodiment without departing from the spirit and ~;~
scope of the invention as defined by the claims.
