English Abstract

The invention is intended for use with
purses; pouches, bags, haversacks, document
holders, etc., and is designed to hold the bag
or holder and its contents securely in place
during active movement, to distribute the
weight of the bag over the body, and to effec-
tively dampen heavier blows. The device has
an elastic belt (D) which is fitted around the
waist and a shoulder strap (A). There are fas-
tenings along the belt at points (F and B).
The bag attaches to the belt and to the strap
and slides freely along the belt. The bag is
placed most conveniently at the front of the
body.

The discription
The motion of a person running is a continuous upward-
downward movement. A weight carried in a bag affects the
motion of the bag and thereby the body, by bringing the
following forces into play.
a) the body has completed its downward movement and
begins its upward movement from the lowest position:
Fdr,=F,+F~-F~= m(g+A~~)+mWZdn~2;-Fi
b) The body begins to fall from the highest position:
FOP=-F~+F~-F._-m(g-,Adr,)+mW2~P/2 -Ff
where
F,= gravitational force
F; = inertial force
F,= friction
A"P= acceleration of the body in upward movement
~,~,=acceleration of the body in downward movement
W~F=velocity of the weight in upward movement
W~~=velocity of the weight in downward movement
m= the mass of the weight
S= represents discord or displacement, where inertial
forces act and the displacement which is needed to halt
the downward or upward movement of the weight and direct
it upward or downward again.
When these forces become sufficiently strong the weight
and the bag begin to move relative to the body. When
displacement s becomes sufficiently great the weight
creates a discord relative to the motion of the body. In
this way the weight and the bag fall out of the step with
the motion of the body which carrier experiences as an
unpleasent bouncing movement. Displacement s becomes even
greater. In ordinary devices the weight is not fixed in
its position in the bag and will move at a greater
velocity than the bag. Thus F; consists of two components,
the first being determined by the mass and velocity of
the weight or parts of it and other by the mass and
velocity of the device, as a contributing factor
to the inertial force F; , bringing up displacement s
additionally.
The invention envisages a device which conforms to the
introduction of the patent requirement 1 or a subsequent
requirement the purpose of the invention is to keep
displacement s at a so low level that it does not
disturb the carrier.
The invention designed according to requirement 6 secures
a bag or holder with its contents in place (Fig. 2.). The
bag (E) will be attached to upper end of the front side
and to lower end of the rear side according to Fig.2.
instead of an adjustable fastening. The lower part of the
bag (E) remains adjustable on the belt (D) by means of
belt (D).(Fig.3.)
When the mass of the weight is increased or the carrier
begins to run instead of walk, the equilibrium between
Fd~ F~Pand the positioning forces may become disrupted.
With bags ordinarily in use it would be necessary to take
the bag off and open the buckles to adjust the length of

CA 02131198 2001-03-22
the belt or strap in order to fasten the bag more
securely to the body. In such cases one must usually
hold the weight or bag with the hands which are not free.
The invention designed according to requirement 1 or
a subsequent requirement provides a solution to this
problem as it is not necessary to open any buckle or to
take the bag off in order to adjust the belt or strap. To
increase effect of elasticity according to requirement 7
can different sides of the device have different
elasticities. One side is always the rear side and the
device can be worn on the both sides of the body.
In sudden falls or jumpes the device will become
subjected to considerably greater strains. With device
commonly in use the sturdiness of the construction under
such conditions is put to severe test. The invention
designed according to requirement 1 or a subsequent
requirement effectively reduces the impact of heavier
blows due to the elasticity of the belt (D) and
distributes the pressure of the bag upon the device and
thereby upon the body.
If it is necessary to carry paper or documents (A4), to
move around freely and to have one's hands free while
having a breast pocket available at the same time, there
are at present no known devices which permit insertion or
removal of material without first taking off the bag. The
invention designed according to requirement 9 provides a
solution to this problem.
Equations (1) and (2) show that the lower the level of
displacements s the greater the forces acting upon the
device and thereby the body of the carrier. With the
invention designed according to requirement 1 or a
subsequent requirement, the weight is pressed tihgtly
against the body thereby reducing the moment of the
weight upon the carrier's shoulder and substantially
increasing the friction. This together with the belt's
elasticity holds the bag and its contents stationary. The
counteractive force of the elasticity is proportional to
displacement s.
In ordinary devices the forces F~~ and Fd~ affect a
relatively limited area of the bony. When one runs or
jumps the body begins to fall at an acceleration rate
of g, whereby a=g. Thus F~=0 and the the weight strikes
the bag and thereby the body upward with inertial force
F;. Equations (1) and (2) show that Fd~ is always greater
thanF~F. Accordingly a stronger fastening is required
when the body falls. With ordinary devices the weight is
bound equally fast in both cases or the bag is suspended
from the belt (D).
The invention designed according to requirement 1 or a
subsequent requirement has a greater dampening effect
downward. The elastic belt (D) together with the friction
of shoulder strap (A), serve to counter the force Fd~ on
both sides of the body. As the body falls only the belt
(D) affects the bag. In this way the same effect is
achieved with less pressure and with a lihgter fastening
to the body. Under the design conforming to requirement 1
or a subsequent requirement the bag can be produced in a

wide variety of forma and sizes for sport, jogging,
a hiking bag, a schoolbag, a haversack, a portfolio or as
a holder for tools or weapons. The invention may be
placed on or under outer clothing, in front or the back
where it functions as a haversack with only a one
shoulder strap. The belt, strap or bag can be made
of any kind of material in such manufacture.
