English Abstract

In a van or such other vehicle having a rear door, the latter opens either vertically up or
down as a whole or with one panel vertically up and another panel vertically down, or,
the door may open as a whole swinging out horizontally on either side or with two panels
each opening horizontally on each one's own side.

I Claim:
(1) In an automobile, specifically a van or such other vehicle, a door at the rear having a
mechanism that allows for the whole of the said door to be lifted vertically up with a
fulcrum at any number of hinges placed at the upper border of the said door, the said
hinges being fixed at the upper border of the opening of the rear side of the automobile,
and this said door being fitted with any of the modifications as described in #(2), #(3),
#(4) and #(5) below.
(2) The door as claimed in #(1) above, having an inset of a two-panel door, this latter
having a mechanism that allows for the said panels to be opened horizontally with a
fulcrum at any number of hinges placed at the outer border of each of the panels, the said
hinges of each of the panels being fixed at the outer vertical border of the opening within
the door as claimed in #(1) above.
(3) The door as claimed in #(1) above, having an inset of a one-panel door, this latter
having a mechanism that allows for the said panel to be opened horizontally with a
fulcrum at any number of hinges placed at any one of its two sides, the said hinges being
fixed at the outer vertical border on the same side of the opening within the former door
as claimed in #(1) above.
(4) The door as claimed in #(1) above, having a two-panel door inset, this latter having a
mechanism that allows one of the said panels to slide horizontally over the other panel
and the latter panel to slide horizontally under the former panel.

PAGE - 6
(5) The door as claimed in #(1) above, having an inset of a one-panel door, this latter
having a mechanism that allows for the said panel, which is preferably placed on one half
of the sides of the area of the former door, to slide over to the other side.
(6) A sliding side-door of an automobile, specifically a van or such other vehicle, having
inset within it another door, the latter opening vertically up.
(7) A sliding side-door of an automobile, specifically a van or such other vehicle, having
inset within it another door, the latter opening vertically down.
(8) A sliding side-door of an automobile specifically a van or such other vehicle, having
inset within it another door, the latter opening horizontally out.

The description here refers to the Diagrams A, AA, B, and C, like number referring to
like part~s) The Diagrams A, B, and C represent only the rear door(s) of the ~ nn~
the rest of the body of the automobile may be assumed to be obscured by this said door(s)
in this strictly rear end-on view Diagram AA represents either of the sides (the right side
is dra~n here as an example) of the automobile
The "outer door" (10) is attached at its upper border to the automobile by hinge (Il)
This "outer door" includes mtegrally ~vithin its body the "inner door" (IOA), that is, (20)
as described separately below, with t-vo side-by-side panels (Diagrams A & B) or one
panel (Diagram C) When pulled by the handle (13), the frame (12) of this "outer door"
pulls the whole of this "outer door", along ~rith the illcul~ù.dt~l "ir~ner door", vertically
upwards around the fulcrum of the hinge (I l) Only the "lift-up" version of this "outer
door" is drawn here; there may be a possible, though probably not very practical, "pull-
down" version of such door ~vith the hinge(s) attached to the lower border and thus
opening vertically down~vards
The "irmer door" (20) (~ d also as (IOA) and as a part of the "outer door" (10) in
connection ~ith the description of this "outer door" (10) above) is set within the "door
frame" (22) which occupies the whole of a hole in the said "outer door" ( 10)

This "inner door" is drawn as having two side-by-side panels (24) and (25) in Diagrams
A, each being attached to the vertical sides of the said "outer door" on its own side.
There may be a possible one-panel version of this "inner door" being attached to the
"outer door" on any one of the two sides. Each of the panels of the "inner door"illustrated here, ~vhen pulled by the handle (23), opens horizontally out around the
fulcrum of the hinge (21).
Another possible variation of this "inner door" is a "sliding" version, as in Diagrams B
(with two sliding panels) and in Diagram C (with one sliding panel), where, for example,
a panel, of the size of horizontally half or more or less half of the total size of the above
said "inner door" and situated on one side, slides horizontally onto the other side. In
Diagram B, the right door-panel (25), when pushed to the lefl by the door handle (~3) of
that door-panel, would slide over (or under) the lefl door-panel (24) horizontally. The
same way, the said lefl door-panel can be made to slide over (or under) the said right
door-panel. Each one of both of the right and the lefl door-panels can be made to slide
over (or under) the other. Also, in another version, as in Diagram C, there is only one of
these door-panels, right or lefl (here only the right one is drawn as an example), sliding to
the lefl or to the right .c~p~ inside the other side of the "outer door". In theinstance where there is only one such sliding "inner door" panel, it should preferably be
placed, for example, on the right side in ~u~ of the ease and safety of
passengers using this rear door when the automobile is parked on the right side curb of a
street (the same ~vay as in the case of a van or a truck having only one sliding door on its
side, the latter opens on the right side as a rule in places where right-hand driving is

practiced; obviously the left side would be preferred in left-handed driving and/or
parking conditions).
When any one of these "outer door" or "inner door" is operative, preferably the other one
should be locked in a closed position. Such locking mPrh~ m may be manual, but
preferably automatic, by a mP~h ~ l or electronic or such other devicc well-known to
the related industry and ~ illg science.
Some obvious variations, for example, the vertically opening door opening up or dov~n;
or the vertically opening door being inside of a one-panel horizontally opening "outer
door" the former being in one panel, or in two pane~s (one upper panel opening up and
one lower panel opening down), and so on and so forth, would be considered within the
scope of this present invention. Also, a vertical~y opening or horizonta~ly opening door
set wilhin a sliding door, such as in the case of a sliding side door of a van, should be
considered withm the scope of this present invention as, for example, in Diagram AA
showing such a horizontally swing-out "inner door" (42) inset within a side-wise sliding
side "outer door" (41),
