English Abstract

A brace for attachment between two cylindrical fence posts
comprises a pair of sliding tubular members which can be pinned to define a
length of a brace. Each end of the brace carries a strap which can be bent
slightly to follow the curvature of the respective fence post so that the
strap
wraps around the fence post and is nailed thereto. The brace is thus
attached across the top of the fence posts and can be simply mounted in
place without the necessity for notching the fence posts.

BRACE FOR FENCE POSTS

This invention relates to a base for basing fence posts in a
fencing system and to a braced fence structure using the base.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Conventionally ranch fencing is formed from readily available
materials including particularly wooden posts which are not shaped but
simply cylindrical formed by cutting from the original tree trunk. One fence
post is then braced relative to the next adjacent by notching one post at the
top and the other post at the bottom and by inserting a diagonal beam

which is then toe-nailed to the posts. This procedure is time consuming,
crude in appearance and sometimes ineffective.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

It is one object of the present invention, therefore to provide an
improved brace for a fencing system of this type.

According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a
braced fence comprising:
two vertical generally cylindrical fence posts;

a brace connected from a position adjacent the top of one post
to a position adjacent the top of the other post;

the brace comprising:
a first tubular member;

a second tubular member in which the first is slidable;

a pin engaged through aligned holes in the first and second
tubular members;

and two curved plates each attached to a respective end of the
brace and curved so as to follow a curvature of an outside surface of the
cylindrical fence post, each plate having holes by which it is nailed to the
fence post.

2
Preferably each curved plate comprises a strap having a height
substantially equal to a height of the tubular member and a length sufficient
to wrap around the fence post on either side of the tubular member.

Preferably the tubular members are square in cross section.

According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided
a brace for connection between the top of two adjacent generally cylindrical
fence posts of a fence comprising:

a first tubular member;

a second tubular member in which the first is slidable;

a pin engaged through aligned holes in the first and second
tubular members;

and two curved plates each attached to a respective end of the
brace and curved so as to follow a curvature of an outside surface of the
cylindrical fence post, each plate having holes by which it is nailed to the
fence post.

One embodiment of the invention will now be described in
conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a braced fence system
according to the present invention.

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the based fence of Figure 1.

In the drawings like characters of reference indicate
corresponding parts in the different figures.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The fencing system of the present invention comprises a fence
post 10 and a fence post 11 both of which are cylindrical, cut from the tree
trunk. The fence post carries a plurality of barbed wires 12 strung between
the posts.

3
Occasionally it will be necessary to brace the posts so that they
remain vertical and to prevent the whole fencing system from collapsing. It
is particularly necessary at corners or adjacent to gates where the barbed
wire applies longitudinal tension on the posts.

The brace comprises a first tubular member 13 and a second
tubular member 14 with the second slidable inside the first so as to increase
and decrease the effective length of the brace. Each of the tubular
members is of square cross section. The tubular members have transverse
holes 15 for receiving a pin 16 which can locate the tubular members at a

required length. Each end of the brace carries a plate 17, 18 in the form of
a strap having a height substantially equal to the height of the tubular
member and a length significantly greater than the tubular member so it
extends outwardly to each side of the tubular member to define legs 19 and
20. These are bent so as to follow the curvature of the cylindrical post.

Each leg has holes 21 for receiving respective a pair of nails 22 by which
the leg of the strap is strapped is nailed to the post.

This arrangement avoids the necessity for notching the post
since the legs can be readily bent to slightly increase or decrease the
curvature to wrap around the post regardless of its diameter.

Since various modifications can be made in my invention as
herein above described, and many apparently widely different embodiments
of same made within the spirit and scope of the claims without departing
from such spirit and scope, it is intended that all matter contained in the
accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not
in
a limiting sense.
