English Abstract

The sights on a rifle* or handgun, whether telescopic or open, need to be aligned with the
bore of the gun in order for it to be fired accurately.
The idea behind this invention to use a small, visible light laser inserted in the chamber
of the rifle* to help align the telescopic sight or iron sight with the bore of the barrel.

Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed
are defined as follows:
1. A device utilizing a laser which when inserted in the firing chamber of a rifle* or
handgun direct the visible beam from the laser down the inside of the barrel and out the
muzzle, projecting that beam onto any reflective surface to aid in the aligning of
telescopic or open sights on the gun in which it is inserted.
2. A device as described in claim 1, using interchangeable adapters to allow it to be
fitted to rifles/handguns* of different calibres and chamber sizes.
*The word "rifle" in this usage can also include what is referred by some as "long guns",
and "shotguns".

Description

Note: Descriptions are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

CA 02217791 1997-12-05
SPECIFICATION
There are various alignment devices available that are placed in the end ofthe barrel and
use arbors to fit them snugly to the bore of the rifle*. If they do not truly line up with the
rifle bore the person tr,ying to align the sight will not know unhl the rifle* is test fired.
This system uses a small laser o~,dling at visible wavclenglhs mounted in a housing
that can be ~I r-lled to adapters forvarious calibers and ch~.bel size.
When it is col~c;ctly installed in the cha...ber of a rifle* and turned on the beam shines
down the inside of the barrel and is plo;ected on ~halever surface the rifle is l)oilltillg at,
The sight can then be aligned with the p~jected spot from the laser at the ~ ce
desired If the laser is not in ~lignm~nt with the bore, it will strike the inside of the
barrel and no clear spot will be projected.
Live ~ounds still need to be fired to make final adiu~ e.lts to colll~n~le for the
ballistics of the ammunition, but the amount of adjusting will be 1.. ;n;,.,;~edThis system can also be used to quickly check if the sights have be bu-~ ed or hloc~d
out of position by i~se.li.lg it in the cha~-lber and noting the position of the pro, iected spot
relative to the sight(s), and noting if the position has ch~..g~ from when it was used to
set the sights originally.

DESCRIPIION OF DRAWINGS
Figure 1.
The laser, a solid-state device, cylindrical, app,o~l,ldlely 18mm long by 9mrn across,
in mounted in a larger cylinder app~xhl, ately 30mm long, with the length that the laser
is inserted in, a~p,o~ el~ 12 mm across, and the far end cut down to app,~,~,n~ately
1/4 inch and lhl~aded to allow the mounting of chamber adapters, (if this end is not
~aded, then all~,lh~l me~o~l of ~ th;l~ the chal~bel ada~ can be used, l~r~videdthat it securely con"~;~s the two pieces). Through the length ofthe threaded piece is
drilled a fine hole, apploAillldtely 3 mm, which passes h-~t, into the thicker section
and provides an exit for the beam from the laser.
l power may be ,upplied from an exf~n~t battery pack through a Ieng~ of wire.
A short steel cable can be attached to the "baclc" of the larger cylinder to aid in the
io.l ofthe unit from the firing C~ -bet after use.
Figure 2.
Chamber adapters sized to fit each calibre are hollow, and have the back end tapped and
aded to accept the ll"caded end of the laser module. (If threads are being used to
co~l~l the two pieces.)
Figure 3.
I~se, led in the ch~l~r of a rifle*, the laser beam passes down the leng~ of the bar~el,
exits the muzzle and forms a spot of light directly in line with the bore. Looking through
a lelescol).c l~ t~d on the rifle*, the user can adjust the sight to align with the spot of
light at the range they select. Open sights can also be aligned this way, though the
ac~ wilt likely be less than ~at of lelescol,.c sights.
Figure 4.
This ~ willg is a combination of the above three drawings, showing the laser module
with the chamber adapter(s), and how it would function in a rifle*.
