English Abstract

A coloring package made from a moldable/flexable material such as aluminum
foil
to be used by hairstylists for a process known to the hairdressing industry as
highlighting.
Highlighting is a service offered by hairstylists to their clientelle wherein
selected strands
of hair are chemically treated with a color formulation or bleach mixture and
kept separate
from the remaining hair that the hairstylist chooses not to be chemically
treated.
This coloring package is comprised of a rectangular shaped sheet that attached
to
the hair by a securing means or adhesive strip that is situated at the
uppermost edge of the
sheet located around the perimeter of the coloring sheet are appendages that
fold over the
origional sheet to eliminate color leakage. Also by varying the size of these
appendages
they can act as color dividers allowing for more than one chemical formulation
to be used
within the same coloring package which as up to now has not yet been possible
with
existing industry aids known of or proposed here to fore.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention is intended for the use of hairstylists for a process known as
highlighting commonly performed in the hairdressing industry.

3 D~- ~ ~
CA 02229606 1998-04-27
THE HIGHLIGHT PAPER
To date the highlight papers have consistently been rectangular in shape and
are
comprised of a flexible material. Materials that are commonly used are
aluminum foil, plastic,
Styrofoam and paper. In all of these cases they are placed underneath the
selected strand of hair
parallel to the head. After which the hair is painted with a color formulation
and the highlight
paper is then folded in half upwards from the bottom to meet the top edge in
order to isolate the
color treated hair. Now the paper hangs from the head and will be left alone
until the processing
time has been completed. A multitude of papers can be used on one head of hair
depending on
how many different colors the client wishes to have, how much of their hair
the they want
colored or how creative the stylist choses to be. All of the above mentioned
papers are limited
to contain only one color formulation per sheet. The addition of another color
requires the use of
extra papers. For example, if a head of hair was to be highlighted both blonde
and red, there
would be a need for twice the amount of papers. Moreover if a head was to be
highlighted three
different colors (i.e. blonde, red, and brown) three times the amount of
papers would be required.
Obstacles can arise when an abundance of papers are used on the head of hair
to create a
multicolored effect. An example of this is when a head of hair is highlighted
with two or more
colors, it can end up being so densely covered with papers that the
hairstylist can easily lose track
of which color formulation is on each paper. Keeping track of the color being
used is critical to
the end result. Without an awareness of where each color formulation resides
on the head it is
very likely that the color could be lumped together and look unbalanced or
uneven wherein an
undesired appearance would be the result. Correcting such an unsatisfactory
result is
inconvenient and time consuming, not to mention that the correction would be
damaging to the
client's hair. Also it is difficult to stay in clean even sections when there
are stacks of paper
surrounding every attempted section of hair. It is very easy to lose one's
place and miss section
or to flatten a paper causing leakageor pull one loose trying to manoeuvre the
next highlight
paper in place as close to the hair's root as possible while painting the
color formula on the paper
holding the section of hair. If a paper is flattened out and the color is
leaked out, or a paper gets
pulled loose, usually the escaped color formula will color any hair that it
comes in contact with
leaving bands or spots of color in its path. Correcting these spots and/or
color is simple but time
consuming and can be a nuisance.

CA 02229606 1998-04-27
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
I have found that these obstacles can be overcome by adding appendages to
the body of a rectangular shaped paper. These appendages vary in size
depending on which
purpose they are intended to serve. For example when a head of hair is being
highlighted
with two or more different color formulations (i.e. brown, blonde, and/or red)
the appendages
would be large enough to cover the entire area of the rectangular shaped sheet
so as to act
as a color divider protecting the original rectangular shaped sheet and the
hair it contains
from the second color formulation that will be applied to a new section of
hair which will be
painted on the backside of the first color divider. In the case that a third
color formulation
will be used, another appendage large enough to cover and contain the newly
formed
combination of the original rectangular shaped sheet, the first color divider
and the locks of
color treated hair inbetween would be folded over the sheet and the third
color formulation
would then be painted on the backside of the second color divider. In order to
protect this
third color formula a third appendage is required to fold over the newly
painted third section
of hair. The third appendage must be large enough to cover the entire area of
these previous
steps, but it is to be slightly larger so it can then fold over the edge to
form a completely
enclosed package.
This enclosed package itself eliminated the need for an additional two papers.
In such cases as two different color formulations will be used to highlight a
head of hair one
of the three appendages would not be used as a color divider but as a leak
guard. The step
by step process would be the same. First a section of hair would be colored on
the original
rectangular shaped sheet. Next the first appendage would fold over the sheet
and a second
color formula would be painted onto the backside of the color divider. Then a
second
appendage would fold over and around the first color divider to isolate the
color treated hair.
Afterwhich the third appendage that equals only a fraction in the size of the
other two
appendages folds over the previous two, acting as a leak guard, in order to
encapsulate the
two separate locks of hair being colored by two different color formulations.
This second
package is completely enclosed and has eliminated the need for an additional
paper in this
two color process.

~o~ 18
CA 02229606 1998-04-27
Thirdly in such case as only one color formulation will be used to highlight
a head of hair the appendages will be smaller in size due to their only
purpose being to act
as a leak guard. Also in this case there is only need for two appendages.
Regarding a single
color being used to highlight a head of hair the original rectangular shaped
sheet will be
larger in size due to after the color formula is applied to the strands of
hair on this sheet, the
sheet will then fold up from the bottom to meet the top edge just like
traditional highlight
papers two appendages located at either side of the coloring sheet will fold
over the
sandwiched sheet in order to create a completely enclosed package that is safe
from the
possibilities of leakage.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION IN USE
Obtain a section of hair (21 ) for the purpose of chemical treatment. Attach
sheet ( 1 ) by means of the adhesive strip ( 12) to the base of the chosen
section as close to the
root as possible. When the sheet is secure to the hair administer the color
formulation to the
hair. Using Figure 1 fold up the sheet at center fold line (3) joining the
lower most perimeter
edge ( 13) with the highest point perimeter edge ( 14). Note that the left and
right perimeters
(4 & 8) of the secondary body (2) lie exactly on top of the left and right
vertical fold lines
(5 & 9)of the primary body. At this point fold the left and right appendages
(6 & 10) by
means of the left and right vertical fold lines (5 & 9) over primary ( 1 ) and
secondary body
(2) combination. The colored hair is now securely encapsulated in the coloring
package (20)
without any worries of color leakage.
Obtain a section of hair (21 ) for the purpose of chemical treatment. Attach
sheet ( 1 ) by means of the adhesive strip ( 12) to the base of the chosen
section as close to the
root as possible. When the sheet is secure to the hair administer the color
formulation to the
hair. Using Figure 2 fold the right appendage ( 10) over the primary body ( 1
) by means of
the right vertical fold line (9) to join together the right appendage ( 11 )
perimeter edge and
the left vertical fold line (5). Next retain another section of hair (21) and
let it lie against the
backside of the right appendage (10) that was previously folded over the first
section of
chemically treated hair and apply the second color formula. At this time fold
the left
appendage (6) over the backside of the right appendage ( 10) which now holds
the second
section of colored hair by means of the left vertical fold line (5) so that
the left vertical
appendage fold line ( 15) is in line with the right vertical fold line (9)
which itself folds over
the edge of the right vertical fold line (9) to secure the left appendage (6).
Next the lower
appendage (2) will fold up over the right appendage (10) by means of the lower
fold line (3)
extended securely containing the two separate sections of hair colored with
two different
color formulations inside of the coloring package (21 ).

G~ ( ~ CA 02229606 1998-04-27
Obtain a section of hair (21 ) for the purpose of chemical treatment. Attach
sheet (1 ) by means of the adhesive strip ( 12) to the base of the chosen
section as close to the
root as possible. When the sheet is secure to the hair administer the color
formulation to the
hair. Using Figure 3 fold up the lower appendage (2) by means of the lower
appendage fold
line (3) joining the lower most perimeter edge (13) with the highest point
perimeter edge
( 14). The left and right perimeter edges (8) of the lower appendage are in
line with the left
(5)and right (9) vertical fold lines of the primary body (1). The next step is
to obtain a
second section of hair and lie it on the backside of the lower appendage (2)
that was
previously folded over the original section of colored hair. Apply the second
color
formulation to the
newly obtained second section of hair.
In order to securely contain this second section of hair fold the right
appendage ( 10) over the side of the lower appendage (2) by means of the right
vertical fold
line (9) so that the right appendage perimeter edge ( 11 ) is in line with the
left perimeter edge
(4) of the lower appendage. Next obtain a third section of hair and lie it on
the backside of
the right appendage ( 10) that had previously been folded over the second
section of colored
hair. Apply the third color formulation to the third section of hair. In order
to contain this
newly colored third section of hair fold the left appendage (6) over top of
the right appendage
(10) where the third section of colored hair resides by means of the left
vertical fold line (5).
At this time the left vertical appendage fold line (15) will meet and fold
over the edge of the
right vertical fold line (9) so that the left appendage perimeter edge (7)
lies on the backside
of the primary body ( 1 ). In order to secure this last section of hair the
lower perimeter edge
( 17) will fold down underneath the coloring package (20) by means of the
lower fold line
of left appendage ( 16) extended so that the lower perimeter of the left
appendage ( 17) lies
on the backside of the primary body ( 1 ). This coloring package (20) will
securely contain
all three sections of hair colored by three different color formulations and
will eliminate the
possibility of leakage.

SLJ~~IMARY OF THE INVENTION
The invention allows for a new creativity in efficient hair coloring. With the
described
varying size and placement of said appendages the operator of this new
highlight paper can work
up to three different color formulations on three separate sections of hair.
This would give the
hairstylist using the device a clear, concise placement of color rather than
trying to keep track of
dozens of papers remembering where each color resides. One could adapt a
simple system of
color system number one on the top layer, Color two in the middle layer and
color three on the
bottom layer. Also these appendages would provide the hairstylist with a
leakage guard when
folded around the edges of the coloring package. The safe and leakage free
coloring that this
package would provide along with the reduced number of papers needed on a
multicolored head
of hair is a much needed asset to the hairstyling industry. The invention
would allow hairstylists
to become more time efficient and organized in their work. All of these
factors can affect the
price and outcome of a hairstylist's end result. Any device that provide such
benefit would surely
become an asset in this competitive industry.
