Patent Application : SELF-MONITORING REMOTE ALARM
Inventor : Bibhuti Bhusan BARDHAN

Background of Invention
There are various commercial security firms that provide 24-hour continuous
remote
security monitoring of properties with the help of security alarm system
(e.g., infra-red
sensors placed at strategic locations inside and/or outside the property)
installed at the
property coupled with a wired telephone system to monitor the whole system
continuously and from a remote location (such as the office of the said firms)
at the other
end of the telephone system. In case of the said security system being
triggered and
wrong or no pass-code being provided, the said remote location of the said
security firms
takes appropriate actions (e.g., informing the police or other agencies to
check the
property). In case of some more sophisticated such security systems, the
security firms
use the telephone along with a remote loudspeaker and microphone at the
property to ask
the intruder to identify himself or herself with a password or pass-code. In
case of a
wrong or no password or pass-code, the police or any other suitable agency is
called to
check the property and take appropriate actions.
Normally, the security firms install the said security system at the property
to be watched
and do the said 24-hour continuous monitoring themselves for a periodic fee,
such as a
certain amount of dollars monthly or yearly, in addition to any initial one
time installation
charge that is not incorporated into the on-going periodic charges.
Such remote monitoring by the security firms is usually redundant when the
owner or
manager of the property is present at the property. Even in case of intrusion
into the
property by strangers without the knowledge of the said owner or manager who
is present
at the said property but, say, has fallen asleep or is otherwise oblivious of
such intrusion,
an alarm bell system (with or without a remote video system) that is triggered
by an
alarm system (using, say, infra-red ray) may easily draw his or her attention.

However, when the said owner or manager is away from the property, he or she
may
require or wish to have the said monitoring of his or her property being done
by someone
else remotely.
In order to avoid the periodic charges by the security firms for such remote
monitoring,
the said owner or manager may choose to do the said remote monitoring by
himself or
herself using the same technology as the said security firms use, except that
the said
owner or manager himself or herself handles the triggering of the monitoring
security
system as stated above.

Description of Invention
This is a remotely monitored security alarm system, coupled with a set of
wired
telephone or wireless cellular telephone or wireless pager or such other
telecommunication system on one end at the property and another set of wired
telephone
or wireless cellular telephone or wireless pager or such other
telecommunication system
at the other end with the property owner/manager/minder who himself or herself
does the
continuous remote monitoring privately as required (e.g., when he or she is
not present at
the site) and, in case of an unwanted intrusion triggering this remote
monitoring system
(along with wrong or no password or pass-code from the intruder or intruders),
takes
appropriate measures (such as calling the police or any other suitable agency
or any
person such as a friend or a relative or a neighbour to go and check the
property unless he
or she wishes and is able to do the checking personally).
The said property owner/manager/minder may also use the same kind of two-way
voice
alarm system as used by some commercial firms as mentioned above.
One of the important differences between such private monitoring and the said
commercial monitoring is that in the case of the former, the said periodic
fixed charges
are avoided.
In the present invention, in addition to the above features, if the said
property owners or
managers so choose, they may use, whenever needed, the "Call Forward" system
(offered
by the telephone companies) to let, as their surrogate, another person (such
as a friend or
a relative or, even, a commercial firm, say for a per-use-basis fee) to do the
required
monitoring and act as required.

The above said remote monitoring system, including the two-way voice alarm
system, is
already in public use (though only by security firms, for example, and not by
ordinary
owner/manager of a property privately) for guarding properties. Therefore, the
means and
mechanisms of building and use of such remote monitoring systems are of common
knowledge.
