mitten/glove can be made
from any winter wear fabric. This mitten/glove i5 comprised of two main
bodies. An outer mitten
Shaped Shell and and inner glove which has no fingertips. When the two bodies
are worn together
they give Superior winter protection. The movable parts on the main mitt body
are: a finger flip
portion; a thumb flip portion; and, a No-lose wrist modification which allows
the wearer to expose
the entire inner glove body or bear the hand completely without removing the
mitt/glove. Thus
minimizing the chances of losing them. Contained within the inner workings of
the mitt body are
compartments which can be used to house Small items for Safe keeping.

DESCRIPTION
MULTI-FUNCTIONAL CONVEi~TIBLE MITTEN/GLOVE SyS'~M
BACKGf~OUND
This invention i5 a two part system for covering the hands Suitable for anyone
who goes outside
in cold temperatures.
Usually winter hand coverings are either mittens which enclose the four finger
digits in one sheath
and the thumb in another Sheath. Or, gloves which enclose all of the digits in
Separate sheaths.
Kecently we have Seen mitt/glove combinations Such a5 U.S. Patent 1188453. In
this case an
outer mitt finger Sheath has been attached to an inner glove allowing the
wearer to expose their
fingers when needed.
Compartments have been made in other mittens and gloves for heating elements.
For examples
you may look at U.S. Patents 1970081 (Eisendrath); 2792827 (Gravin); 3712288
(Weirs);
and 1188453. Some of the above mentioned compartments render the gloves
cumbersome to
(Continued on page 3)

CA 02269273 1999-04-14
(Continued from page 2)
use, and, none have suggested other uses for Said compartments. Also, none of
the afore men-
tinned give the wearer the freedom to expose a gloved or bear hand while Still
wearing the mitt por-
Lion containing their valuables, thus minimizing the chances of losing them.
The combination glove-mitten described in U.S. latent 1188453 gives the wearer
the choice be-
tween gloved fingers or a mitten sheath. Some such combination mitt/gloves
have disadvantages
such as; the baby finger can involuntarily pop out from under the mitt portion
exposing it to the ele-
menu, also the straight line of the flip portion has a tendency to allow snow
to enter the finger
area while the wearer is engaged in moving snow. It is important to note
thatjobs which require the
use of your fingers also require the use of your thumb. A disadvantage to
1188453 is that it does
not allow the wearer to expose their thumb, therefore making it difficult for
the wearer to manipu-
late objects or equipment with the maximum dexterity that woul d be possible
if all of the digits were
exposed. As well, in 1188453 the mitt portion is attached directly to the
glove portion making it
impossible to wear the mitt and glove portions separate from one another.
DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention to provide a System for covering the
hand which incorporates
(Continued on page 4)

CA 02269273 1999-04-14
(Continued from page 3)
the maximum dexterity possible in a glove with the warmth of a mitten while
allowing the wearer
the freedom to choose between wearing one or all parts of the Said invention
Separately. The
wearer can expose or keep covered any part of the hand with ease. The fingers,
thumbs, or the
entire hand portions of the outer mitt can be put on or removed individually
and the uni~uene55
of the removable inner glove provides maximum dexterity.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a hand covering
which has inner com-
partment5 to provide safe keeping for Small items, which can be secured to the
wearer at all
times. Even When the mitten/glove i5 not being worn on the hand. Thus
minimizing the chances
Of 1055.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a No-lose modification
which allows the
mitten/giove to remain on the wearers wrist when not rer~uired. This provides
maximum dexter-
ity and minimizes the chances of losing the mitten/glove when they are not
being used a hand
covering. This No-lose modification can be applied to any winter hand
covering.

A DETAILED DESCf~IpTION OF THE DRAWINGS
#1. The main body of the mitt can be made in any conceivable way from any
winter wear fabric.
The outer mitt can be the same length as the inner glove or it can be Shorter
or longer whatever iS
preferred.

(Continued from page 6)
The finger Sheath of this mitt flips back to reveal gloved fingers or a bare
hand whichever the
wearer prefers. The palm side of this sheath can be constructed using any
number of pattern
pieces. The back of the mitt is one piece horizontally but can be multiple
pieces vertically.The fin-
ger flip section of the mitt has a diagonal opening across the palm, arching
from the inner base of
the thumb across the palm of the hand on an angle meeting the outside of the
palm below the
baby finger. An optional fastener of choice can be applied to the inside edge
of this flip portion
which will connect it to palm of the mitt. (One suitable fastener is sold
under the trademark
VELCRO~.) This opening in the palm allows the wearer to remove their fingers
from the mitt
sheath without removing the entire mitt. When this sheath is removed it is
folded across the
back of the hand. It i5 held in this open position by any Suitable fastener,
applied to the top off
back Side of the finger flip portion and attaches to the other side of the
fastener applied to the
back of the mitt about the base of the hand.
Under the diagonal Section of the finger flip portion, the palm of the mitt
goes across the hand
at the base of the fingers. Low enough so it does not interfere with the
workings of the fingers,
while being high enough on the palm to conceal the entire palm when the finger
sheath is closed.

(Continued from page 7)
The thumb flip portion works in the Same manor a5 the finger flip portion. The
thumb Sheath i5
part of, or connected to, the mitt, this can be done in any way conceivable by
Someone in the in-
duStry. The inside of the thumb sheath i5 finished at the base of the thumb
and i5 not connected
to the fingers of the mitt/glove. A Small fastener could be applied to close
the thumb and the
finger portion of the mitt/glove together, but it i5 not imperative.. The
wearer i5 able to remove
their thumb from the mitt, folding the thumb Sheath back and attaching it to
the body of the
mitt. Any fastener such a5 VELCRO~ or Snaps attached to the back of the thumb
and the body
of the mitt hold it open.
The No-lose wrist modification i5 truly revolutionary. This modification can
be easily applied to
any mitt or glove. It i5 a Stretchable band of any width applied to the cuff
of any mitt or glove
to form a loop which allows the wearer to hang the mitt/glove around their
wrist when not
needed. This minimizes the chances of losing them. The loop also makes the
mitts and/or gloves
easy to hang up or can be used to connect them together for Storage. The
concept of the No-
lose loop can be applied to any mitt or glove in any manor conceivable. Some
examples of possible
applications are; The loop can extend around the entire wrist of the mitt
being attached in one or
(Continued on page 9)

CA 02269273 1999-04-14
(Continued from page 8)
more places to the mitt body. Or it can extend half way around the cuff area
with the ends of
the band being attached to the mitt body.
A hook fastener may be applied to the mitt/glove to enable the wearer to
attach them to a
jacket or Ski Suit.
If the finger flip portion i5 lined there are two spots where a hidden
compartment can be made.
One between the layers of fabric on the inside of the palm which would be held
Shut by a suitable
fastener Such a5 VELCRO~ or a Snap. The other between the back of the mitt
body and the back
lining of the finger flip. Added Security can be given to the back compartment
by applying any
Suitable fastener Such as VELCRO~, Snap etc. This allows the wearer to Safely
Store Small
things Such as credit cards, money or anything else that fits.
#2. The removable glove portion with no finger tips can be made in any
conceivable manor from
any winter wear fabric. The wrist portion must be constructed in a manor which
fits Snugly about
the wrist to Stop Snow and drafts from entering. An optional fastener Such aS
VELCRO~ is ap-
plied to the back of the hand to Secure the insert to the main mitt body. In
this case the other
(Continued on page 10)

CA 02269273 1999-04-14
(Continued from page 9)
Side of the fastener would be applied to the inside of the back of the mitt
body.
#3. The No-lose wrist modification can be made and mounted on any winter hand
covering in any
way conceivable from any material. Some form of elasticity can be given to the
band. It Should
also be noted that this band can be used to hang the mitten/gloves up when not
being used, or to
secure the two mitten/gloves to one another when not being worn.
#4. The thumb flip portion of this invention can be applied in any way
conceivable which allows the
thumb to be exposed and works in the Same way as the finger flip portions.
#5. The finger flip portion of the mitt can be applied in any conceivable
manor. The diagonal cut
of the palm stops unwanted Snow from entering into the finger portion while
comfortably secur-
ing the baby finger within the mitt portion. Optional VELCI~O~, or other
Suitable tabs can be ap-
plied to the inner edge of the finger flip portion and to the outside of the
palm area beside the
thumb for further protection from Snow and drafts.
#6. The hidden compartment allows the wearer to store Small items safely
within their mitt.
(Continued on page Il)

CA 02269273 1999-04-14
(Co»tirrued from page 10)
#7. VELCRO~ or any other fastener secures the glove insert and mitt portion
together.
#8. Any hooks can be applied to attach the mitts together or to ajacket when
not in use.
#9. VELCRO~ or any other fastener i5 attached to the back of the thumb portion
of the mitt
body and connects to #10. This is used to Secure the thumb portion to the mitt
body when the
thumb is in the flipped position.
#10. YELCRO~ or any other fastener is placed on the main mitt body and
connects to #9 to
hold the thumb portion open when in the flipped position.
#11. VELCRO~ or any other fastener is placed at the top of the back side of
the angled finger
flip portion and is connected to #12 to hold the mitt in the open flipped
position.
#12. VELCROO or any other fastener is placed on the back of the main mitt body
and connected
to #11 when the finger flip portion is opened to reveal the fingers.
(Contirated on page 12)

(Continued from page ll)
#13. Optional VELCRO~ tab, or any other fastener, i5 placed on the inside palm
area of the finger
flip portion. This connects to #14 to stop unwanted Snow and drafts from
entering the finger por-
Lion of the mitt.
#14. Optional VELCRO tab, or any other fastener, is placed on the palm beside
the base of the
thumb of the mitt body. This connects to #13 to stop unwanted snow and drafts
from entering
the finger portion of the mitt.
#15. Optional VELCRO~ tab, or any other fastener, is placed on the inside of
the outer shell of the
back of the mitt portion and connects to #16 to add extra security to the
inner compartment.
#16. Optional VELCRD~ tab, or any other fastener, is placed on the inside of
the back panel of the
finger flip portion and connects to #15 to add extra security to the inner
compartment.
#1?. An additional inner compartment can be made on the palm side of the
finger flip portion.
