English Abstract

An assembly or system which is capable of attaching two electric cables (each
carrying several wires) along their common axis thus causing the connection to
be less prone to wear and tear and ensuing strain on the connection than with
the current common household method of connection where cable wires are
attached to each other individually giving rise to a connection which is
bulkier
and more prone to wear and tear and ensuing breakage than is the case with
this invention.

Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
An assembly or system enabling two electrical cables each carrying several
wires to be connected in line with their common axis
An assembly as claimed in which two significant parts - the first part having
chambers to accept wires from one cable, and the second part having "leaves"
to
hold the corresponding wires from the second cable (which "leaves" allow the
corresponding wire-pairs to remain separate from other wire-pairs when the
assembly is tightened), when joined and rotated, cause the pairs of wires to
come together thus making a connection parallel to the common axis of the
cables.
An assembly as claimed in which one significant part has a novel feature,
herein
named "leaves", which radiate from the axis of connection, to guide the wires
and allow corresponding wire-pairs to remain separate from other wire-pairs.

Description

Multi-Electric-Wire Axial Connector
The Problem
Currently, electrical cables carrying several wires (e.g. a 3 wire household
extension cable), when broken, are repaired with single connectors for each
wire. For example three connectors are required to repair a cut cable. This
method also leads to a "star" shape of connection with the number of star
points
being the number of wires in each cable (see Sketch 'A'). The connection is
bulky and has to be compressed before being protected from dampness and
wear and tear etc..
The invention
The invention described herein is a connector for joining two electrical
cables in
an axial line rather than radially as is the common method.
As per sketch 'B', attached, the invention consists of two parts or conduits -
one
for each cable. Part A is a conduit with 3 chambers (in this case the
illustration of
one of a three wire cable - but this number can be extended by allowing a
chamber for each wire in an arrangement with fewer or more than 3 wires)
Part B is a conduit with 3 "leaves" radiating out frcm its axis. These
"leaves° are
attached to an end-plate making the single unit (B). Each wire is fed into the
gap
between these leaves via a corresponding hole in the end-plate.

CA 02275078 1999-06-08
The assembly: Part B with its wires are inserted into Part A with its wires
The
wires in part A correspond to those in part B (i.e. ground to ground etc.).
The
parts are then rotated so as to press the wires together. The pressure is
maintained by, for example, a clip - or alternatively a locking nut or
equivalent
locking mechanism.
The number of wires accommodated by this invention is not limited to three,
since the number of chambers and "leaves" can be increased to four and more -
see sketch 'C'. Similarly, the principle can be used for cables having one
wire or
two wires.
