DEVICE FOR CONTR01-LABLY INFLUENCING THE FRICTION FORCES
BETWEEN THE GUIDE SURFACES AND CONTACT SURFACES OF BEARING
CHOCKS OF THE ROLLS GUIDED IN THE HOUSING WINDOWS OF ROLL STANDS
1. FIELD OF THE J[NV N ON
The present invention relates to a device for controllably influencing
the friction forces between the guide surfaces and the contact surfaces
of bearing chocks of the rolls guided in the housing windows of roll
stands.
2. DESCRIPTION OF THE RI_LATED ART
Devices of this type have the purpose of counteracting vibrations which
occur frequently during rolling of sheet metal strips in cluster roll
stands, particularly at high rolling speeds resulting in the danger of
the occurrence of vibration problems. These vibrations may lead to
surface damage, such as chatter marks on the strips and may also
negatively affect the service life of the rolls. If it is necessary
to roll at lower rolling speeds in order to avoid these vibrations, the
productivity of the rolling train decreases and the operational costs
increase.
It has already been propcised in the past to counteract these vibration
problems by producing a friction force between the guide and contact
surfaces of housing windows and bearing chocks by using hollow bodies
which were expandable by means of hydraulic pressure. These expandable
hollow bodies are mounted in the housing windows of the roll stands and
act on the contact surfaces of the bearing chocks. While these hollow
bodies result in an increase of the friction forces between the guide

2
and contact surfaces of housing windows and bearing chocks, they have
the disadvantage that they act only spherically on the contact surfaces
of the bearing chocks and do not act uniformly over the entire surfaces
thereof. A change of the contact pressures cannot be carried out or is
very difficult to carry out. A defined contact pressure and friction
force cannot be achieved or is very difficult to achieve.
SUNIIhIARY OF THE INI/ENTION
Therefore, it is the primary object of the present invention to improve
the roll stand arrangement of the devices of the type described above
in such a way that a variable force application over the entire contact
surfaces of the bearing chocks is made possible in order to produce
defined friction forces, independently of the conditions at any given
time with respect to rolling technology.
In accordance witti the present invention, this object is met by planar
support plates for suppoirting the guide surfaces, wherein the support
plates are guided so as to be slidable perpendicularly relative to the
guide or contact surfaces of the housing window and the bearing chock,
and wherein means are provided for applying pressure to the rear side
of each support plate.
In accordance with another feature of the present invention, a
piston/cylinder unit for applying pressure on the rear side of the
support plate is rnounted in the roll housing.

3
Finally, exchangeable wear plates provided with the contact surface may be
placed
on the support plates.
The device according to the present invention makes it possible to produce
defined
contact forces and friction forces at the bearing chocks in the housing window
of the
roll stand while bridging the operational play, i.e., to produce in a targeted
manner
defined contact forces and friction forces independently of the conditions
with
respect to rolling technology.
The various features of novelty which characterize the invention are pointed
out with
particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of the disclosure.
For a
better understanding of the invention, its operating advantages, specific
objects
attained by its use, reference should be had to the drawing and descriptive
matter in
which there are illustrated and described preferred embodiments of the
invention.
In one aspect, the present invention resides in a device for regulable
influencing of
the friction forces between the guide surfaces and contact surfaces of bearing
chocks, which are guided in the housing windows of roll stands, of the rolls,
wherein
one of the two contact surfaces of the bearing chock bears against a guide
surface
of the housing window and the other contact surface is formed by a flat plate
which
is inserted in the wall of the housing window to be displaceable and which is
loadable with pressure at the rear side in pre-calculated and adjustable
manner.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of the device according to the present invention.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
The drawing is a schematic partial view of a housing window SF formed in the
housing posts SH1, SH2 of a roll stand, otherwise not illustrated in detail,
as seen in
the axial direction of the rolls. The bearing chock LE of the roll W is guided
on the
housing window SF between the guide surfaces FF1 and FF2 of the window so as
to be movable up and down in the direction of the double arrow DP. A recess AS
is
provided in the surface of the housing window SF of the housing post SH1 on
the
left as seen in the drawing. A planar plate PL is placed in the recess AS so
as to be
slidable perpendicularly of the guide surface FF1. The plate PL has on its
side
facing and bearing chock and the contact surface AF1 thereof the corresponding
guide surface FF1 and the piston of a piston/cylinder unit KZA mounted in the
housing post SH acts on the rear side of the plate PL. A wear plate, not shown
in
the drawing, can be placed on the surface of the plate PL facing the contact
surface
AF1 of the bearing chock LE, wherein one side of the wear plate then forms the
guide surface FF1.

CA 02300028 2008-02-18
Using hydraulic control units, not shown, the piston/cylinder unit KZA can
move the
plate PL in the recess AS over the adjustment distance AW against the bearing
chock LE.
5 This produces the previously calculated contact forces FP and, resulting
from these
contact forces FP, the friction forces FR between the guide surfaces FF1 and
FF2
of the housing window SF and the contact surfaces AF1 and AF2 of the bearing
chock LE.
The plate PL can be used on the drive side or on the operator side in back-up
rolls,
intermediate rolls and also the work rolls of a roll stand.
The invention is not limited by the embodiments described above which are
presented as examples only but can be modified in various ways within the
scope of
protection defined by the appended patent claims.
