Device for Accommodating an Advertising Medium
The invention concerns a device for accommodating an advertising medium.
Advertising is indispensable in the modern economy. Advertising media in the
form of posters are already affixed to many locations outdoors. However,
advertising
spaces that reliably attract attention are scarce and expensive.
The object of the invention is to create an additional option for affixing
advertising
media that are noticed by many target individuals. Moreover, the invention
proposes an
appropriate and suitable device for accommodating the advertising media and
advertising spaces.
The solution in accordance with the invention is to place the advertising
medium
in the region of the backrest of a seat, in particular a park bench or a park
chair.
A very advantageous refinement of the device in accordance with the invention
is
a housing to accommodate the advertising medium that is attached to the
backrest. In
accordance with another embodiment of the invention, the housing, preferably
in the
shape of a parallelepiped, can, on a side surface delimited by edges that are
perpendicular to the outer backrest and extend downward in the plane of the
backrest,
be equipped with a pivoting side flap for closing, opening, and placement and
removal
of the advertising medium. In accordance with the invention, this closable
surface is
CA 02339647 2001-02-06
capable of being latched, e.g. locked, so that the advertising medium cannot
be
removed.
The housing in accordance with the invention can have supports, which may take
the form of rails or guides, for example. By this means, the advertising
medium, for
example an advertising poster, can be inserted in the housing and also held
firmly in
position. Another possibility for accommodating the advertising medium is a
longitudinally extending compartment of the housing, into which the
advertising medium
is inserted. It is advantageous for the front face of the housing to consist
of a
transparent material, more particularly a difficult to break plastic such as
acrylic.
In accordance with a refinement of the invention, the housing can be attached
by
means of snap devices or other fastening elements to the backrest or a part
thereof, for
example to two or more support posts. However, it can also be slid over the
backrest
with the side flap open for installation and removal.
Another embodiment option for the device according to the invention is for
there
to be attached to the backrest of the seat or parts thereof a base plate on
which is
located a mounting plate, to which, in turn, is attached the housing.
The device in accordance with the invention can also be placed on the armrests
of a park bench or a park chair. It is also within the scope of the invention
to affix a
housing with advertising medium to other places.
The invention has the advantage that park benches or park chairs can be used
to
accommodate interchangeable advertising media. In addition, the public is
especially
inclined to notice the advertising on the advertising medium before using the
park bench
or park chair.

Figs. 1 and 2 show two posts (2) of the backrest (1 ) of a park bench which is
otherwise not shown; these posts are vertical or run at an angle downward, and
to them
are attached, e.g. screwed, boards that run horizontally (not shown). A
parallelepiped
housing (3) for accommodating a schematically indicated advertising medium (4)
in the
form of an elongated poster can be attached to the backrest (1 ) by means of
so-called

snap fasteners (6) or other suitable fastening elements. Located in the
housing (3), as
shown especially well in Fig. 1a, on a bottom surface (7) and a top surface
(8) are
guides and supports in the form of rails (9), in the intermediate space (11 )
between
which the advertising medium can be inserted and held. Fig. 1 a shows details
of the
rails (9) on the bottom surface (7). Corresponding rails can be provided on
the top
surface (8). In the intermediate space (11 ), the inserted advertising medium
(4) can be
guided by the rails and held in its final position. It is possible to provide
openings leading
to the outside (not shown) in the bottom surface (7) of the housing in order
to improve
ventilation in the interior of the housing (3).
Located on at least one side surface (12) of the housing (3), which side
surface is
delimited by edges (10a) that are perpendicular to the backrest and edges
(10b) that
extend downward, is a side flap (13) that can be doubly folded by means of two
hinges
(14 and 16). This creates two surface sections (17 and 18), of which the
surface
section (18) Goses off the side of the housing, while the surface section (17)
extends
around the housing (3) in the area of the backrest. The surface sections (17,
18) can
be secured in their closed position by means of fastening elements (19) such
as locks.
A corresponding side flap (13a) can be arranged on the other side of the
housing (3);
this is merely indicated by hatched lines.
The advertising medium (4), instead of being arranged between rails (9), can
also be arranged as shown in Fig. 1 b in a special section (22) in the front
area of the
housing (3). The majority of the bottom surface (7) can then be omitted, so
the housing
is essentially open to the bottom. In the device as per Figs. 1, 1a and 2, the
advertising
medium (4) is introduced in that the side flap (13) is opened, the advertising
medium is
4
CA 02339647 2001-02-06
introduced between the rails (9) in the direction of the arrow (15), and then
the side flap
(13) is closed again, and also locked if necessary.
Instead of screw-mounting the housing (3) to the backrest (1), it can also be
slid
over the backrest from above so that its top surface (8) rests on the
backrest. In this
case, the housing is open to the bottom, at least in part. It is then
advantageous for the
advertising medium (4) to be located, as already mentioned and as shown in
Fig. 1 b, in
a compartment (22) that runs parallel to the backrest, preferably over the
entire length
thereof. In this event, attached to one side of the housing (3) are the snap
fasteners (6)
that make it possible to hitch the housing (3) to the backrest (1 ). The
hitching prevents
the housing (3) from being removed from the backrest.
The front side of the housing, which is to say the side facing the seated
person,
is closed off with a transparent front surface (21 ) to permit viewing of the
advertising
medium. A transparent plastic, which should be as unbreakable as possible, for
example acrylic, is preferentially suited as the material. However, it is also
possible to
leave the housing (3) open at the front, without a front surface (21 ), so
that the
advertising medium (4) is openly presented to the viewer with no further
separating
partition. This arrangement makes a front surface (21 ) dispensable, for
instance for
cost reasons.
A variant of the invention is described in Figs. 3 through 6.
A base plate (26) is fastened to the backrest (1 ) by means of screws (27) as
shown in Fig. 3. This base plate has openings (28a through 28n). 29 is a
fastening
device. Another plate which serves as a cover, namely a mounting plate (30),
has, as
shown in Fig. 4, a locking device and also openings (31 a through 31 n) that
correspond
s
CA 02339647 2001-02-06
in terms of position and design to the openings (28a through 28n) of the base
plate (26).
The two plates (26) and (30) are connected to one another through openings
(28a
through 28k) and (31 a through 31 k) by means of locking plastic clips which
engage the
aligned openings. The plate (30) has additional openings (31 o through 31 t).
Fig. 5 shows a top view, in horizontal section, of a housing (3) in which the
advertising medium (4) can be inserted, for example by means of rails (9) as
described
for Fig. 1b. The housing (3) is equipped with a side flap (13), which is
opened and
closed as shown by the double arrow (32) by means of a joint or hinge (33). A
lock (35)
can keep the flap (13) locked in the closed position. Top snap fastener
elements (340
through 31 t), which engage in the openings (31 o through 31 t) of the
mounting plate (30)
and lock the housing (3) to the top of the mounting plate (30), serve to
fasten the
housing (3) to the mounting plate (30). Bottom snap fastener elements (34n,
34m, 341)
on the housing (3), which engage in corresponding openings (31 n, 31 m, 31 I)
and lock
the housing (3) to the bottom of the mounting plate (30), serve the same
purpose. This
housing (3) can likewise be open to the front, eliminating a front surface (21
).
Insertion of an advertising medium (4) into the housing (3) in the direction
of
arrow 36 is illustrated in Fig. 6. At the bottom, the advertising medium is
guided and
held between rails (9) that are arranged on a bottom surface (7). At the top,
the
advertising medium is guided and held in a groove (37) in the top surtace (8).
The flap
(13) of the housing (3) is shown in Fig. 6 in the closed position, even though
it pivots
open, causing the side surface to become free for insertion of the advertising
medium
(4).
CA 02339647 2001-02-06
Finally, it is also possible to use hinges (39) to fasten a pivoting,
transparent front
plate (40) to a base plate (38) that is fastened, for example with screws
(27), to the
posts (2) of a park bench. Said front plate (40) can be secured relative to
the base plate
(38) by a lock (41 ), which can be operated with a key (42), for example.
The front plate (40) is supported along its upper edge (43) so as to be able
to
pivot about the hinges (39) on an adjacent upper edge (44) of the base plate.
In this
way, it is possible to pivot the bottom boundary edge (45) of the front plate
(40) - which
faces away from the upper edge 43 - away from a corresponding bottom edge (46)
of
the base plate (38).
After the front plate (40) has been pivoted away from the base plate (38), a
groove (47) extending along the bottom edge (46) becomes accessible; said
groove
forms a bottom termination of the base plate (38). An advertising medium can
be
guided in this groove (47). In this context, the groove (47) is fitted in the
base plate (38)
in such a way that, after the advertising medium has been inserted, the front
plate (40)
can be pivoted about the hinges (39) toward the base plate (38) and then
brought firmly
against the base plate (38) so that it can be locked against the base plate
(38) with the
key. Additional firm seating of the front plate (40) on the base plate (38) is
provided by
snap-in fasteners (48), which, after latching into appropriate recesses in the
base plate
(38), press the front plate (40) firmly against the advertising medium carried
in the
groove (47). Appropriate rubber seals in the vicinity of longitudinal edges
(49, 50)
andlor transverse edges (51, 52) are provided so that the front plate (40)
contacts any
existing con-esponding guides in the base plate (38) in a moisture-impervious
manner.
CA 02339647 2001-02-06
Another possibility is to omit the groove (47) in the region of the base plate
(38)
and instead to provide an equivalent groove on the bottom boundary edge (45)
of the
front plate (40). The advisability of whether the groove (47) should be
provided in the
base plate (38) or the front plate (40) depends on the type of advertising
medium to be
inserted.
