SU~~ARY OF THE INVENTION
INVENTOR . GILHERT DAOUST
ASSIGNEE . N/A
INVENTION: IMPROVED HOOKMARIC
TITLE OF THE INVENTION
Improved bookmark.
FIELD OF THE INV$NTION
This invention relates to bookmarks,
used to separate read and unread pages of a book
and to bookmarks comprising writing means and
adhesive tabs.
BACKGROUND OF THE INV$NTION
This invention relates to bookmarks, and
more particularly, to a bookmark made of foldable
material to be securely attached to a book and
having one or several cords or ribbons to be
inserted between pages for indication purposes,
including without restriction, segregating read
pages from unread pages.

Bookmarks are usually simple articles,
perhaps a sheet of paper or cardboard, that is
placed in a book between read and unread pages so
as to indicate where the reader stopped reading or
is to begin reading again.
Moreover, bookmarks can sometimes be
clips affixed to a page top or a decorated and
elongated article that can be inserted between the
pages.
However, most of such bookmarks have the
inconvenience that they could get lost or
separated from the book, since not attached to
said book, which means that the reader will loose
its place.
Sometimes, a traditional bookmark type
is made of a thin ribbon permanently bound to the
binding of the book, without any possibility of
having it used for another book.

SUI~IARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention
to provide an inexpensive and reusable bookmark,
attachable to the chosen book and detachable after
the book has been read, which could be adjusted
for several sizes of books, and which further
provides for the possibility of adding writing
means, such as a crayon, pencil, felt-tipped pen
and the like, and adhesive tabs, allowing to make
notes while reading, and book marking any page or
passage of interest.
This and other objects of the invention
will become apparent from a reading of this
specification as a whole.
Accordingly, in its broadest aspect, the
invention provides a bookmark comprising a first
planar member and a second planar member; said
first planar member and said second planar member
being adapted to be folded along a transversal

fold line which, once folded, define in each of
the first planar member and the second planar
member an internal section and an external
section, wherein said external sections of said
planar members are attached to each other by a
flexible member, a number of cords or ribbons
being attached to said flexible member.
The planar members may have any
convenient shape of equal or unequal length.
The planar members and the flexible
member may be of the same material, such as
lightweight cardboard, without being restrictive
about the material used.
In a preferred embodiment, the first
planar member and the second planar member are
each folded along the fold line and the first
folded planar member is mounted over the front
cover of a book, its internal section being
installed juxtaposingly to the internal side of

the front cover and held fractionally while its
external section being installed juxtaposingly to
the external side of the front cover, and the
second folded planar member is mounted over the
back cover of said book, its internal section
being installed juxtaposingly to the internal side
of the back cover and held fractionally while its
external section being installed juxtaposingly to
the external side of the back cover, and installed
so that the flexible member is fittingly adjusted
around the edge of the book, the cords or ribbons
attached to said flexible member being then
available to be inserted between the chosen pages
of the book, where properly needed.
In a further preferred embodiment, cords
or ribbons attached to the flexible member,
provide for the possibility of having one or
several writing means and adhesive tabs attached
to said cords or ribbons, in order to allow the

reader to identify for future reference any words,
paragraphs or pages of the book under reading.
Other objects and further scope of
applicability of the present invention will become
apparent from the detailed description given
hereinafter. It should be understood, however,
that this detailed description, while indicating
preferred embodiments of the invention, is given
by way of illustration only, since various changes
and modifications within the spirit and scope of
the invention will become apparent to those
skilled in the art.
BRI$F DESCRIPTION OF TH$ DRA~INaS
The present invention will be further
understood from the following description with
references to the drawings in which:

invention installed on a book, showing the
resulting position of the cords or ribbons;

planar member 1 and a second planar member 2, said
first planar member 1 and second planar member 2
being adapted to be folded along the transversal
fold line 3, wherein, once folded, said first
planar member 1 defines an internal section 4 and
an external section 5 and said second planar
member 2 defines an internal section 6 and
external section 7, wherein said external sections
5 and 7 are attached to each other by a flexible
member 8. In the preferred embodiment as shown in
Figure 2, the first planar member 1 and the second
planar member 2 are each folded along the fold
line 3 and a number of cords or ribbons 9 are
attached to said flexible member 8. In the
preferred embodiment as shown in Figure 3, the
first folded planar member 1 is mounted over the
front cover 10 of the book, its external section 5
overlapping the external side of said front cover
10 and its internal section 4 being inserted

juxtaposingly to the internal side of the front
cover 10 so as to be held fractionally, and the
second folded planar member 2 is mounted over the
back cover 11 of the book, its external section 7
overlapping the external side of said back cover
11 and its internal section 6 being inserted
juxtaposingly to the internal side of the back
cover 11 so as to be held fractionally, and
installed so that the flexible member 8 is
fittingly adjusted around the edge of the book,
the cords or ribbons 9 attached to said flexible
member 8 being available to be inserted between
chosen pages where properly needed, as shown on
Figure 4. Figure 5 shows a bookmark as shown in
Figure 1 where first planar member 1 and second
planar member 2 are of different shapes, all other
attributes of the previously described preferred
embodiment remaining identical. Figure 6 shows
writing means 12 and adhesive tabs 13 which could

be attached to cords or ribbons 9. Figure 7 shows
a second preferred embodiment of the invention
where first planar member 1 and second planar
member 2 are made of a rigid material, each of
said first planar member 1 and second planar
member 2 being U-shaped, where internal sections 4
and 6 are typically longer than external sections
5 and 7, where external sections 5 and 7 provide
for a transverse groove 14 allowing fastening
means 15 to fittingly adjust flexible member 8
around the edge of the book.
Although the invention has been
described above with respect with one specific
form, it will be evident to a person skilled in
the art that it may be modified and refined in
various ways. It is therefore wished to have it
understood that the present invention should not
be limited in scope, except by the terms of the
following claims.
