English Abstract

A topical soothing bruise healing preparation is disclosed containing 3
active, natural
ingredients: Arnica, Witch Hazel and Menthol. The invention provides novel
dermatological composition using a specific ratio of stated active ingredients
which is
useful for bruises to: speed the healing time, reduce discoloration, and
reduce the
pain/discomfort of the bruise in a soothing and moisturizing topical
preparation. The
disclosed ratio produces desired effect on bruises but also presents as a
virtually
odourless preparation.

TOPICAL SOOTHING BRUISE HEALING PREPARATION
Description:
Name of Invention: Topica/ Soothing Bruise Healing Preparation
This invention relates to a topical natural / pharmaceutical grade preparation
containing 3 active natural ingredients, which is applied to bruises to help
them heal
more quickly.
Many people generally let bruises heal on their own. Some apply ice, but very
few
people actually treat bruises as they tend to be self limiting, and treatments
are not
well established. Arnica and witch hazel are independently known within the
Natural
Health movement as ingredients that may improve the healing process of
bruises.
However, these ingredients have several issues limiting their use as bruise
treatments. First, the odour of these products is unappealing. Arnica
containing
topical products have a strong herbal scent that reduces its use in mainstream
pharmacies and witch hazel is extracted in alcohol yielding a very potent
alcohol
odour to it's preparations. The second issue affecting the use of these
products is
their marginal efficacy on treating bruises on their own. Data from published
journals
remains questionable.
I have found that these disadvantages can be overcome through combining Arnica
and Witch Hazel in a single topical preparation and adding Menthol to the
mixture
using a specific ratio discussed below. Menthol, possessing a mint-like odour,
is a
counter-irritant that provides a penetrating and cooling sensation to the
affected
area, resulting in pain relief. Adding Menthol to the Arnica and Witch hazel,
has the
novel effect of significantly reducing each ingredient's odour, to the point
that the
final product is virtually odourless.
The specific ratio being disclosed is 1:1:0.05 of Arnica Oil : Witch Hazel
Distillate
Menthol. The concentrations being disclosed in this ratio are: Arnica Oil 10%,
Witch
Hazel Distillate 10% and Menthol 0.5%. The end product is virtually odouriess,
speeds the healing time, reduce discoloration, and reduces the pain/discomfort
of the
bruise in a soothing and moisturizing application. Moreover, after applying
this
Topical Soothing Bruise Healing Preparation to my bruises, it is apparent that
the
bruises heal sooner than when the active ingredients were applied to bruises
individually. Other important attributes of the preparation are that it is non-
staining,
and non-greasy, which are significant considerations when applying topical
preparations.
The best way to use this product for adults and children over 2, is to massage
it
gently onto the affected area as soon as the bruise-related injury occurs, 3
times
daily, until the bruise disappears or up to a maximum of 7 days. The product
should
be used along with the RICE principle of bruise management: Rest, Ice,
Compression
and Elevation.
The preparation should be used externally only, and contact with eyes and
mucous
membranes should be avoided. It should not be used on broken skin or open
wounds
or if allergic to the daisy family. In case of accidental ingestion,
professional advice
should be sought, or a Poison Control Centre should be immediately contacted.
The
product should be discontinued and a doctor should be consulted if
hypersensitivity

CA 02620242 2008-03-03
occurs such as rash or irritation, if condition worsens or if symptoms persist
for more
than 7 days. It should be stored at room temperature. The bruise should not be
massaged if it causes pain. Furthermore, the topical preparation should not be
used
if under 2 years old, if pregnant or breast-feeding, or if taking blood
thinning
medication (anticoagulants) as it has not been tested in these groups.
This product can be used to treat bruises or contusions resulting from falls,
blunt
injuries, sports injuries, cosmetic procedures or vaccinations. Furthermore it
is for
human and animal use.
