FIRE STARTING TORCH
The present invention relates to a fire starting torch and, more
particularly, to a portable fire starting torch having a handle
and internally positioned fire making materials for beginning a
fire.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
It is well known that materials can be utilized to start fires,
whether they are used at a campsite, or in the fireplace of a
home. However, some materials can be cumbersome or time-
consuming to combust in a prompt, efficient manner. For example,
it may take several steps to light kindling, and wait for wood
to begin to burn. This may involve the use of paper being added
to assist in starting a fire, or other materials. Furthermore,
when starting a fire outdoors, one must deal with issues such as
wind, which can make it difficult to initiate a fire in the
early stages of lighting.
It would therefore be advantageous to have an improved, fire
starting torch having a handle and internally positioned fire
making materials for beginning a fire, wherein the fire is
started within the fire staring torch, impervious to wind or
natural elements.
It would be further advantageous to have a portable fire
starting torch having a handle and internally positioned fire
making materials for beginning a fire. In this regard, the
present invention substantially fulfills this need.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an object and advantage of the present invention to

CA 02848947 2015-06-02
provide an improved, fire starting torch having a handle and
internally positioned fire making materials for beginning a
fire.
It is a further object and advantage of the present to provide
an improved, portable fire starting torch having internally
interconnected bored passage and bored opening for creating an
air flow supply path within the camping torch for beginning a
fire.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is
provided a fire starting torch comprising a central portion
having a longitudinally extending bored opening defined therein,
the bored opening extending from an exterior surface of the
central portion to a fire starting location within an interior
of the central portion; a bored passage extending from an
exterior surface of the central portion to be in connection with
the bored opening and the fire starting location within the
interior of the central portion, the connection of the bored
passage and the bored opening creating an air flow supply path
within the torch; fire starting material positioned within at
least one of the fire starting location and the bored passage
for enabling a user to begin a fire within the torch; and a
handle connected to the exterior surface of the central portion.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is
provided a method for manufacturing a fire starting torch
comprising boring a longitudinally extending opening within a
central portion to extend from an exterior surface of the
central portion to a fire starting location within an interior
of the central portion; boring a passage to extend from an
exterior surface of the central portion to be in connection with
2

the opening and the fire starting location within the interior
of the central portion to create an air flow supply path within
the torch; positioning fire starting material within at
least one of the fire starting location and the passage for
enabling a user to begin a fire within the torch; and
securing a handle to the exterior surface of the central
portion.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is
provided a fire starting torch comprising a central portion
having a longitudinally extending bored opening defined therein,
the bored opening having a truncated conical shape extending
from an exterior surface of the central portion to a fire
starting location within an interior of the central portion; a
bored passage extending from an exterior surface of the central
portion to be in connection with the bored opening and the fire
starting location within the interior of the central portion,
the connection of the bored passage and the bored opening
creating an air flow supply path within the torch; fire starting
material positioned within at least one of the fire starting
location and the bored passage for enabling a user to begin a
fire within the torch; and a handle connected to the exterior
surface of the central portion.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The embodiments of the present invention will now be described
by reference to the following figures, in which identical
reference numerals in different figures indicate identical
elements and in which:
Figure 1 is an upper perspective view of an embodiment of the

fire starting torch of the present invention; and
Figure 2 is a side view of the fire starting torch of the
present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
In terms of describing the individual components of the system
in greater detail, and with reference to Figures 1 and 2, the
improved, height and width adjustment system of the present
invention is designated in its entirety in Figure 1 by the
reference numeral 1.
Referring to Figure 1, a first exemplary embodiment of the fire
starting torch of the present invention is shown. In an
exemplary embodiment, the fire starting torch 1 comprises a
central portion 2 having a bored opening 3 positioned on an
upper surface of the central portion 2. In an exemplary
embodiment, the bored opening 3 is substantially centrally
located on the central portion 2, though a worker skilled in the
art would understand that the placement thereof could be varied,
if desired. The bored opening 3 extends from an exterior surface
of the central portion 2 to a fire starting location 10 (seen in
Figure 2) within an interior of the central portion 2. In a
further exemplary embodiment, the bored opening can possess a
truncated conical shape extending from the exterior surface of
the central portion to the fire starting location within the
interior of the central portion. In this manner, an improved air
flow supply path can be created within the fire starting torch
1. The truncated shape can be either wider at the upper opening,
4

CA 02848947 2015-06-02
or inverted, with the wider portion of the opening in the
interior of the central portion.
In an exemplary embodiment, the central portion 2 is made of
wooden material, such as a wooden log, and is substantially
cylindrical. It will be understood however, that a worker
skilled in the art would understand that the precise shape and
configuration of the central portion 2 could be varied as
necessary, and that the central portion could also be made of
materials other than wood, such as certain other materials that
can be combustible.
In a further exemplary embodiment, and with reference to Figure
2, the central portion 2 will have a bored passage 7 positioned
on a side surface of the central portion 2, though it will be
understood that a plurality of passages could be utilized.
The
bored passage 7 extends from an exterior surface of the central
portion 2 to be in connection with the bored opening 3 and the
fire starting location 10 within the interior of the central
portion 2, the connection of the bored passage 7 and the bored
opening 3 creating an air flow supply path within the fire
starting torch 1.
In an exemplary embodiment, the bored passage 7 is
constructed and arranged to be substantially perpendicular to
the bored opening 3, though it will be understood that the exact
placement thereof could be varied. Of course, the bored opening
3 and the bored passage 7 are substantially cylindrical in
shape, though this could be varied if desired.
In a further exemplary embodiment, fire starting material, which
can comprise but is not limited to a wick 9 and wood material

CA 02848947 2015-06-02
(not shown), is positioned for later access and use by a user
within the fire starting torch 1. Preferably, this material is
positioned to reside within the fire starting torch 1 at any of
the fire starting location 10 and the bored passage 7. Such a
wick 9 can be bonded to at least one of an interior
surface of the bored passage 7 and the fire starting location
10, or can be arranged to lie unattached, for later placement
and use by the user. In one embodiment, at least one end of the
wick 9 extends beyond the exterior surface of the central
portion 2, as can be seen in Figure 2, to overhang, or, in an
alternative embodiment, both ends of the wick 9 can be
positioned within at least one of an interior surface of the
bored passage 7 and the fire starting location 10. In this
embodiment, a label 11 can be positioned to cover the bored
passage 7, and possibly also the bored opening 3, until later
use by the user.
As shown in Figure 1, a handle 5 can be connected to the
exterior surface of the central portion 2, for ease of transport
by the user, it being understood that the handle can be arranged
and attached anywhere along an outside surface of the central
portion 2.
By virtue of the interconnection and linking of the bored
opening 3 and the bored passage 7, fresh air is drawn into the
fire starting torch 1, and rises through the forming chimney
effect within, such that fresh air is available to ease the
combustibility of the fire starting material positioned and lit
at the fire starting location 10, or within the bored passage 7.
Furthermore, the fire is started within the fire staring torch
1, substantially impervious to wind or natural elements.
