English Abstract

This invention relates to a method of making an irradiated wood product. The method comprises providing a wood product comprising a first carbohydrate- containing material having a first molecular weight and irradiating the wood product to provide an irradiated wood product comprising a second carbohydrate-containing material having a second molecular weight higher than the first molecular weight. The wood product may be lumber, a laminate or plywood, and may be irradiated with electron beam or gamma radiation. The wood product may receive a dose of gamma radiation or a dose of electron beam radiation. The carbohydrate-containing material can be a cellulosic and/or lignocellulosic material.


French Abstract

Cette invention concerne une méthode de fabrication dun produit de bois irradié. La méthode comporte, dune part, la fourniture dun produit de bois comprenant un premier matériau contenant de lhydrate de carbone présentant un premier poids moléculaire et, dautre part, lirradiation du produit de bois afin de fournir un produit de bois irradié comprenant un deuxième matériau contenant de lhydrate de carbone présentant un deuxième poids moléculaire supérieur au premier poids moléculaire. Le produit de bois peut être du bois duvre, du stratifié ou du contreplaqué et peut être irradié par rayonnement par faisceau électronique ou gamma. Le produit de bois peut recevoir une dose de rayonnement gamma ou une dose de rayonnement par faisceau électronique. Le matériau contenant de lhydrate de carbone peut être un matériau cellulosique ou lignocellulosique.

CLAIMS:

1. A method of increasing the molecular weight of a cellulosic and/or
lignocellulosic material comprised in a wood product, the method comprising:
providing a wood product selected from lumber, a laminate or plywood; and
irradiating the wood product with a dose of electron beam radiation of from
about 0.1 Mrad to about 5 Mrad or a dose of gamma radiation of from about 0.2
Mrad to
about 10 Mrad.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein the wood product is irradiated with a dose
of
gamma radiation of from about 0.2 Mrad to about 10 Mrad.
3. The method of claim 1 or 2 wherein the wood product is irradiated with a
dose
of gamma radiation of from about 0.5 Mrad to about 7.5 Mrad.
4. The method of claim 1 wherein the wood product is irradiated with a dose
of
electron beam radiation of from about 0.1 Mrad to about 5 Mrad.
5. The method of any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the lumber is selected
from
pine, poplar or oak lumber.
6. The method of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the cellulosic material
is
cellulose.
7. Use of irradiation to increase the mechanical properties of lumber,
wherein the
irradiation comprises a dose of electron beam radiation of from about 0.1 Mrad
to
about 5 Mrad or a dose of gamma radiation of from about 0.2 Mrad to about 10
Mrad.
8. The use according to claim 7, wherein the mechanical property is
strength.
9. The use of claim 7 or 8, wherein the lumber is pine lumber.

10. The use of any one of claims 7 to 9, wherein the irradiation comprises
a dose of
gamma radiation of from about 0.2 Mrad to about 10 Mrad.
11. The use of any one of claims 7 to 9, wherein the irradiation comprises
a dose of
electron beam radiation of from about 0.1 Mrad to about 5 Mrad.
