English Abstract

This invention relates to a method of changing a molecular structure of a biomass feedstock. The method comprises processing a pretreated biomass feedstock to produce a product in which the processing comprises contacting with a microorganism and/or enzyme. The products are alcohols, organic acids, proteins, hydrocarbons, or sugars, and the pretreated biomass feedstock is obtained by pretreating a biomass feedstock using two or more different pretreatment methods that each change the molecular structure of the biomass feedstock. The different pretreatment method is radiation, sonication, pyrolysis, and/or oxidation.


French Abstract

Cette invention porte sur une méthode de changement d'une structure moléculaire d'une matière première de biomasse. La méthode comprend le traitement d'une matière première de biomasse prétraitée pour produire une matière dans laquelle le traitement comprend la mise en contact avec un microorganisme ou un enzyme. Les produits sont des alcools, des acides organiques, des protéines, des hydrocarbures ou des sucres et la matière de biomasse prétraitée est obtenue en prétraitant une matière première de biomasse à l'aide de deux méthodes de prétraitement différentes, ou plus, qui changent chacune la structure moléculaire de la matière première de biomasse. La méthode de prétraitement différent est la radiation, la sonication, la pyrolyse ou l'oxydation.

CLAIMS:
1. A method of changing a molecular structure of a biomass feedstock, the
method comprising:
processing a pretreated biomass feedstock to produce a protein, wherein the
processing comprises contacting with a microorganism and/or enzyme, wherein
the pretreated
biomass feedstock has been obtained by pretreating a biomass feedstock using
two or more
different pretreatment methods that each change the molecular structure of the
biomass
feedstock, and wherein the different pretreatment methods comprise radiation
and sonication.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein the two or more pretreatment methods are
applied to the biomass feedstock at the same time.
3. The method of claim 1 wherein the radiation is in the form of an
electron beam.
4. The method of claim 3 wherein the electron beam radiation is applied to
a total
dosage of at least 10 MRad, and the sonication is applied to a total energy of
more than 5 MJ/M3.
5. The method of claim 3 or 4, wherein the radiation precedes the other
pretreatment(s) or wherein the radiation follows the other pretreatment(s).
6. The method of any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the change in molecular
structure of the biomass feedstock comprises a change in any one or more of an
average
molecular weight, average crystallinity, surface area, polymerization,
porosity, branching,
grafting, and domain size or number of the biomass, or wherein the change in
molecular
structure of the biomass feedstock comprises a decrease in either one or both
of an average
molecular weight and average crystallinity of the biomass or an increase in
either one or both
of surface area and porosity of the biomass.
7. The method of any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the processing comprises
contacting the pretreated biomass feedstock with one or more microorganisms
and/or enzymes
to saccharify the pretreated biomass material.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the contacting comprises utilizing one or
more
cellulolytic enzymes.
9. The method of any one of claims 1 to 8 wherein the processing comprises
fermentation.
10. The method of any one of claims 1 to 9 wherein the biomass feedstock
comprises a cellulosic or lignocellulosic material.
11. The method of claim 10 wherein the cellulosic or lignocellulosic
material is
selected from the group consisting of grasses, rice hulls, bagasse, jute,
hemp, flax, bamboo,
sisal, abaca, straw, corn cobs, corn stover, alfalfa, hay, coconut hair,
seaweed, algae and
mixtures thereof.
12. The method of any one of claims 1 to 11, further comprising preparing
the
biomass feedstock by reducing one or more dimensions of individual pieces of
biomass.
13. The method of any one of claims 1 to 12, further comprising treating
the
lignocellulosic material with a chemical.
14. The method of claim 13 wherein the chemical is a base, a mineral acid,
or a
base and a mineral acid.
15. The method of claim 14 wherein the material is treated with a base
selected
from the group consisting of sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, lithium
hydroxide and
ammonium hydroxide.
16. The method of claim 15 wherein the material is treated with potassium
hydroxide.
17. The method of claim 14 wherein the material is treated with a mineral
acid
selected from the group consisting of sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and
phosphoric acid.
18. The method of claim 17 wherein the material is treated with sulfuric
acid.
