English Abstract

This invention relates to a method of changing a molecular structure of a biomass feedstock. The method comprises physically treating a biomass feedstock that has been pretreated using one or more pretreatment methods selected from radiation, sonication, pyrolysis, steam explosion, and oxidation.


French Abstract

La présente invention concerne une méthode de modification d'une structure moléculaire d'une matière première de biomasse. La méthode comprend le traitement physique d'une matière première de biomasse qui a été prétraitée en utilisant une ou plusieurs méthodes de traitement choisies par l'irradiation, la sonication, la pyrolyse, le vapocraquage et l'oxydation.

CLAIMS:
1. A method of processing a biomass feedstock, the method comprising:
physically treating a biomass feedstock that has been pretreated using
electron
beam irradiation,
wherein the irradiation is performed with electrons having an energy of
about 0.3 MeV to about 2.0 MeV.
2. The method of claim 1 further comprising preparing the biomass
feedstock,
prior to pretreating, by mechanically treating the biomass feedstock.
3. The method of claim 1 or 2 wherein physically treating opens up the
pretreated
biomass feedstock.
4. The method of any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein physically treating
exposes
internal fibers of the feedstock.
5. The method of any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the physically treated
material
has an uncompressed bulk density of less than about 0.6 g/cm3.
6. The method of any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the physically treated
material
includes fibers having a length/diameter (L/D) ratio of at least about 5.
7. The method of any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein physically treating the
biomass feedstock comprises shearing the feedstock.
8. The method of any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein physically treating the
biomass feedstock comprises subjecting the feedstock to one or more of the
following: stone
grinding, mechanical ripping or tearing, pin grinding, milling, or air
attrition milling.
9. The method of claim 2 wherein preparing the biomass feedstock comprises
shearing the biomass feedstock.

10. The method of claim 2 wherein preparing the biomass feedstock comprises

subjecting the biomass feedstock to one or more of the following: stone
grinding, mechanical
ripping or tearing, pin grinding, milling, or air attrition milling.
11. The method of any one of claims 1 to 10 wherein the biomass feedstock
comprises a cellulosic or lignocellulosic material.
12. The method of claim 11 wherein the biomass feedstock is selected from
the
group consisting of paper, paper products, paper waste, wood, particle board,
sawdust,
agricultural waste, sewage, silage, grasses, rice hulls, bagasse, cotton,
jute, hemp, flax,
bamboo, sisal, abaca, straw, corn cobs, corn stover, switchgrass, alfalfa,
hay, coconut hair,
seaweed, algae, and mixtures thereof
13. The method of any one of claims 1 to 12, further comprising contacting
the
biomass feedstock with a microorganism or an enzyme.
14. The method of any one of claims 1 to 13, further comprising subjecting
the
physically treated biomass feedstock to enzymatic hydrolysis.
15. The method of any one of claims 1 to 14 wherein the pretreatment
increases
the brittleness of the feedstock.
16. The method of any one of claims 1 to 15, further comprising treating
the
pretreated biomass feedstock with a chemical.
17. The method of claim 16 wherein the chemical is a base, a mineral acid,
or a
base and a mineral acid.
18. The method of claim 17 wherein the material is treated with a base
selected
from the group consisting of sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, lithium
hydroxide and
ammonium hydroxide.
19. The method of claim 18 wherein the material is treated with potassium
hydroxide.

20. The method of claim 17 wherein the material is treated with a mineral
acid
selected from the group consisting of sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and
phosphoric acid.
21. The method of claim 20 wherein the material is treated with sulfuric
acid.
22. The method of any one of claims 1 to 21, wherein the biomass feedstock
has
been physically treated to the extent that the biomass feedstock has a Brunaur-
Emmett-Teller
surface area greater than about 0.25 m2/g.
23. The method of any one of claims 1 to 22, wherein irradiation is
performed to
provide of dose of between about 10 and 150 Mrad.
24. The method of any one of claims 1 to 23, wherein in addition to
irradiation, the
biomass feedstock has been pretreated by using one or more methods selected
from
sonication, pyrolysis, steam explosion and oxidation.
25. The method of claim 2, 9 or 10 wherein preparing the biomass material
reduces
the density of the biomass material.
