ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A silo having a cylindrical wall is constructed from
substantially rectangular, slightly cylindrically curved, flanged
sheets provided all around with bolt holes. At least one straight
side of each of said sheets is not provided with a flange, while
at least one other side is flanged.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclu-
sive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. A circular silo having a cylindrical wall, com-
prising:
a) substantially rectangular, slightly cylindrically
curved flanged sheets provided with bolt holes, each
flanged sheet having first and second straight edges
opposite one another and first and second curved
edges opposite one another;
b) the first curved edge having a substantially
perpendicular flange and the second curved edge
having no flange;
c) the first straight edge having a substantially
perpendicular flange and the second straight edge
having no flange;
d) a plurality of said sheets being assembled
laterally with first straight edges overlapping second
straight edges in shingle-like fashion;
e) additional sheets being assembled vertically
with first curved edges overlapping second curved
edges in shingle-like fashion; and
f) the flange on the first straight edge has one
end extending to the flange on the first curved edge and
another end terminating short of the second curved edge
by a distance sufficient to permit overlapping by first
curved and flanged edges of adjacent sheets.



2. The silo of claim 1 wherein the flange on the
first straight edge of the sheets has a strengthening bent-over
portion parallel with the first straight edge.


3. The silo of claim 1 wherein the flange on the
first straight edge of the sheets has bent tags perpendicular to
the flange at each end thereof as a fastening surface to other
flanges.

SPECIFICATION
This application is a division of my Canadian application Serial
No, 232, 030, filed July 22, 1975,
The invention relates to a silo having a cylindrical wall,
which is constructed from substantially rectangular, slightly
cylindrically curved, flanged sheets provided with bolt holes,
Hithereto it has been common practice to provide these
sheets on four sides with flanges, which have bores for the relative
fastening by means of bolts or rivets. The flanges serve at the
same time for stiffening the silo. To avoid tangential forces
produced in the cylindrical wall the vertical flanges bending the
sheets near the bolt holes,flanges have been stiffened by rugged
~- strips on either side thereof.
It is an bbject of the invention to omit such strips, not only -
to achieve an important saving of material but also to effect a -~ -
considerable reduction in weight of the entire silo.
' To this end according to the invention at least on one -
straight side the sheets are not provided with a flange and on at
, least one other side the sheets are provided with a flange. On
the flange-free sides the sheets can be secured to the adjacent
sheet by means of an overlapping seam. The sheets are preferably - ~-
provided on only two adjacent sides with flanges, w hich prevent the
sheets from bending but which have no function in securing the
sheets to one another. - -

which facilitates the manul~cture thereof, it is advisable to cause
~e curved, flanged eide of the sheets to diverge with respect to
the raw o~ bolt holee on the opposite side to an extent such that the
di tance between mem on the etraight side without a flange is
larger than on the oppoeite eide by the thickness of the sheet.

To facilitate mounting it is furthermore advantageous to cause
the rows of bolt holes along the straight sides of the sheets to diverge to
an extent such that with a number of sheets assembled into a ring the inner
diameter on one side of the ring is equal to the outer diameter on the other
side thereof.
To reduce leaks in the silo wall or the quantity of sealing
material to 6e employed each sheet may be depressed at two opposite corners
by the thickness of the material. However, in a simpler manner each sheet
is depressed over a distance corresponding to the thickness of the material
at the corner without flanges and approximately midway the curved side without
flange.
Since on the straight side the flange is mainly subjected to
buckling forces it may be provided with a tag bent back approximately
parallel to the sheet to enhance its resistance to buckling.
The silo of the invention may be generally defined as a circular
silo having a cylindrical wall comprising substantially rectangular, ~ ---
slightly cylindrically curved flanged sheets provided with bolt holes, each
flanged sheet having first and second straight edges opposite one another
and first and second curved edges opposite one another. The first curved
edge has a substantially perpendicular flange and the second curved edge
has no flange. The first straight edge has a substantially perpendicular
flange and the second straight edge has no flange. A plurality of said ;-
sheets is assembled laterally with first straight edges overlapping second ~ -
straight edges in shingle-like fashion. Additional sheets are assembled
vertically with first curved edges overlapping second curved edges in
shingle-like fashion. The flange on the first straight edge has one end
extending to the flange on the first curved edge and another end terminating
short of the second curved edge by a distance sufficient to permit overlapping ~ -
by first curved and flanged edges of adjacent sheets.
The invention will hereinafter be described with reference to the
drawing.

The cylindrical silo wall according to the invention is
constructed from substantially rectangular, slightly cylindrically
curved sheets provided with flanges. In the embodiment shown in ~ ~ ~
Fig. 1 the sheets 1 are provided on two curved sides on one -
straight side with flanges 20, 21, 22, whereas the other ctraight side
is not provided with a flange. The flanges 20, 21 on the curved sides
have bolt holes for fastening to higher and lower sheets 1, respective-
ly. This mode of fastening is shown on an enlarged scale in Fig. 4,
in which two sheets l~ngaging one another by the flanges 21 and 20
are secured to each other by means of bolts 19 passing through
the holes in said flanges 20, 21. The sheets 1 are horizontally
connected by means of overlapping seams as shown on an enlarged
scale in the sectional view of Fig. 3, where the flange 22 only -
serves for enhancing the resistance to buckling. This flange 22 is pro-
vided at both ends with bent-over tags 30, engaging the depressed
flanges 20 and 21 and being secured thereto by means of a bolt 19 as
is clearly shown in Fig. 2. As a matter of course, the bent-over tags
30 of the flange 22 may also be connected by a welding seam with
the depressed flanges 20 and 21.
To restrict the volume of the silo parts during transport
the cylinder is preferably constructed from at least two groups of
~heets 1, in which groups the distance between the flanges 20, 21
on the curved side~ differs by slightly more than twice the thicknes~
of the material from that in a further group. ~igs. 8 and 9 are

The arc length of the three sheets is the same, but the height is
each time more than twice the thickness of the material smaller
so that in transport the three sheets l fit into one another, When
5 erecting the silo rings of sheets 1 having equal heights are assembled.
A further possibility of restricting the transported volume
resides in that the sheets are provided only on two adjacent sides
with flanges, which prevent sagging of the sheets, but which do not
serve in their relative connection. Fig. 5 shows part of the silo
lO wall assembled from such sheets 23. This sheet 23 is shown in an
elevational view in Fig. 6 and in a horizontal sectional vi~w in
Fig. 7. The sheet 23 is provided on one straight side with a flange
24, which has at both ends a bent-over tag 25 and on one adjacent,
curved side it is provided with a flange 26. This flange 26 is provided
15 at both ends and at the centre with a bolt hole. The two tags 25 are
also provided with a bolt hole. The further bolt holes for Joining
the sheets 23 are provided in the rims of the main portion of the
sheet 23. By disposing the flanges 26 in a slightly inclined position
` relative to the row of bolt holes on the opposite side so that me
20 distance between them on the straight side without flange exceeds that ~ -
on the other side by one thickness of the sheet, the flanges 26 when
being joined can be arranged in a roof-tile fashion one on the other
as is shown in Fig. 5. The row of bolt holes at the side of the
flange 24 and the opposite row of bolt holes diverge to an extent
25 such that when a number of sheets are assembled to form a ring,
~e inner diameter on one side of the ring is equal to the outer
diameter on the other side thereof. Figs. 6 and 7 show that the
flange 24 is stiffened on the straight side by a tag 27 bent back

approximately parallel to the main portion of the sheet and en- '
hancing further the resistance of the flang~ to buckling,
The sheet 23 shown in Fig, 6 may be depressed on
diagonally opposite corners. In a simpler manner, however, the
sheet 23 may be depressed at the left-hand top corner and slightly
to the left of the center on the top side.
