Abstract of the Disclosure
The invention comprises a chamber to be mounted between a
carburetor and an intake manifold of an internal combustion engine so as to
provide increased gasoline mileage and reduced exhaust pollutants.

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A chamber adapted to be mounted between a carburetor and an intake
manifold in an internal combustion engine wherein the chamber has a first
opening on a first face of the chamber, the dimensions of the first opening
adapted to conform the dimensions of the outlet port on the carburetor, a
second opening on a second face which is opposite and parallel with the first
face, the second opening being aligned with the first opening, the dimensions
of the second opening adapted to conform with the dimensions of the inlet
port of the intake manifold, connecting means proximal the first and second
openings whereby the chamber is capable of being connected between the
carburetor and the intake manifold, and the ratio of the volume of the
passage in the chamber between the first opening and the second opening to
the total internal volume of the device is in the range of 1:6 to 1:10.


2. A chamber as defined in claim 1 wherein the distance between the
first face and the second face is about one inch.


3. A chamber as defined in claim 1 wherein the distance between the
first face and the second face is about one inch and the chamber is a
parallelpiped.


4. A chamber as defined in claim 1 wherein the connection means
includes bore holes through the first and second faces and tubular sleeves
inside the chamber and coaxial with the bore holes and in sealing manner
extending from the first face to the second face.

This invention relates to the field of efficiency of, and pollution
abatement in, internal combustion engines.
Many modifications have been made to internal combustion engines to
increase their efficiency and decrease their fuel consumption. At the same
time, advances have been made in controlling the various gaseous pollutants
emitted from internal combustion engines. Known devices for achieving these
ends are often complexJ difficult to service, and expensive. The present
invention is surprisingly simple and can be fitted onto existing engines to
yield greater engine efficiency and, at the same time, to reduce the amount
of gaseous pollutants emitted. The production of carbon monoxide is especially ~ -
reduced.
Although the theory of why the device according to the invention
operates is unknown, the results of the use of the device are significant.

Since the device in use is mounted between the intake manifold of
the engine and the carburetor, the path length of the airluel mix is

increased and may result in more thorough vaporization of the fuel.


An embodiment of the invention will be hereinafter described with

reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a schematic drawing of the device as installed 6etween

3 an intake manifold and a carburetor, and
Figure 2 is an isometric drawing of the device,

Figure 1 shows schematically the atomizer device 6 mounted between
the base portion 2 of a carburetor 1 and the intake manifold 8 with suitable
gaskets 7 therebetween. The upper surface 11 and the lower surface 12 of the
atomizer 6 are parallel with each other. The device may be of any shape, for
example round or rectangular and it may also be indented so as to fit around
- part of the carburetor or engine. Holes 15 in the upper surface 11 are in
~- alignment with similar holes in the lower surface and are adapted to receive
bolt studs 4. Connection is by means of nuts 3. The bolt studs are the same
as normally provided on an engine except that they are somewhat longer so that
they may accommodate the thickness of the atomizer. Support sleeves 9 extend
in sealing manner between the upper and lower surfaces. These sleeves 9 are
coaxial with and slightly larger than the holes 15 which receive the bolt
studs 4.
The drawings show a bore 5, with a plug 10 therein (Figure 2).
Plug 10 can be removed, and an electrical heater element inserted to provide
heat and thus assist in starting the engine on cold days. The electric
heater could be placed in a trough containing fuel and thereby aid starting
of the engine on cold days. In addition, the bores can be used to vacuum
test the air tight mass of the joints in the chamber.
Opening 13 is centrally located in the upper surface 11 of the
device 6. Similarly and in alignment therewith is opening 14 in the lower
.
surface 12 of the atomizer. The size and shape of opening 13 is the same as
the size and shape of the opening in the exit of the carburetor. In the same
way, the size and shape of the opening 14 in the lower surface 12 is the same
as the size and shape of the opening of the intake port of the intake manifold.
Since normally the opening in carburetor exit matches the opening in the
intake manifoldl all these openings are of the same size and shape.
The inside depth of the device 6 is approximately one inch. Also
the ratio of the volume between the openings 13, 14 and the internal volume
of the device is in the range 1:6 to 1:10 but preferably is 1:8. Since the

size of the opening for the carburetor is matched for the engine capacity,

the size of the device will also be matched to the capacity of the engine.

This device facilitates an improved air/fuel mixture entering the
intake manifold of an internal combustion engine. The spray of fuel mixture
combines with the flow of air in the carburetor and enters the chamber, the
internal space of which is below normal atmospheric pressure. Turbulence
results in this chamber and because of the turbulence and par~ial vacuum,
improved vapourization results. As a result of the improved vapourization
and mixing there is a reduction in fuel consumption, improved engine efficiency
and reduced gaseous pollu~ant emitted.
