10~0 ~3~

This invention relates to a shower cabin constructed or
partitions with an upper frame section o a partition on the
scale-of the section acing the shower room, and more particu-
larly refers to shower cabin with clothes and laundry holder.
Different ways o instaLling shower partitions are known
from Swiss Patent 578 659 corresponding to German Patent
2 407 230~ The sliding partition of the bath or shower cabin
can be instalLed between two fixed parallel room walls. The
shower or bath cabin can aLso be designed as a corner cabin,
where at least one o the necessary sectional partitions is in
the form of a sliding partition. The shower or bath cabin can
also be connected to a single room wall, a sliding partition
being connected to the room wall by means of twb fixed parti-
tions. These possibilities are mentioned in order to show that
the term "upper frame section" can be understood to mean the
upper guide section of a sLiding partition as well as the upper
frame section of one o~ the fixed partitions by which the
shower or bath cabin is connected to a room wall. From the
drawings of Swiss Patent 578 659, an overall view of the
various possibilities of installation can be gained.
The construction of a shower partition from two sliding ;
partitions at right angles to each other is also shown in -
German Petty-Patent (Gebrauchsmuster) 7 306 920. This known
arrangement, which has no support at the exposed corner, makes
it possible to enter the shower or bath cabin diagonally. The
panes on the outside of the sliding doors, which face the dry
space, are bridged by gripping bars which can also be used as
towel racks.
It is further known t~ put the shower partition on the rim
of an already existing bath tub, adapting the lower guide rail
accordingly (German Patent 2 314 444). In this patent an

upper guide section also is shown.
The invention can be applied to all these known and
similar arrangements.
It is often desired to hang up dripping wet pieces of
clothing or laundry; for this purpose,'various known aids are
used which are fastened above the bath or shower tube. This
causes unsightly drill holes or cement spots.
It is an object of the invention to improve the use value
of a shower cabin by providing an extendible and retractable
clothes and laundry holder on a shower partition.
According to the present invention, there is provided a
shower cabin'constructed of partitions with an upper frame
section of a partition on the side o the section facing the
shower room, a one-piece mounting holder for a clothes and
laundry holder suitable for use with varying wall thicknesses,
the mounting holder comprising an angLe section with a hori-
zontal leg fastened at the upper frame from the top and with a
vertical leg which on one side rests against the upper frame
section and on the other side has two brackets on which hinge
' pi'ns formed on and extend from the brackets, are arranged
opposite each other, the clothes and laundry holder having two
holding plates disposed close togethér and form a chamber,
which holding plates on one side surround and are rotatable
about the hinge pins and on the other side surround and fixedly '
ho'ld the inner end of a carrying rod in the chamber by bolting
the holding plates to the carrying rod~ the clothes and laundry
holder swivelably moun'ted in said one-piece mounting holder and
extended from said upper-frame section when in a useable posi-
tion to hang clothes and laundry and retracted toward said
upper frame section when not in useable position.
The invention, together with additional objects and

,
logor~;3g
section on the section side facing the shower room side is
provided with at least one clothes and laundry holder, which
can be changed between a useable position (operating position)
and at least one position not in use (rest position).
This clothes and laundry holder, located in the wet
or shower room, advantageously allows one to hand up dripping
wet pieces of clothing or laundry above the bath or shower tube.
The clothes and/or laundry are at the same time shielded from
view by the shower partition if the sliding doors of the shower
or bath cabin are closed.
The clothes and laundry holder can also be designed
as a telescoping rod. In its pushed-in position, it can
advantageously serve as a wash cloth holder. However, the ~-
telestoping rod can also be connected additionally to the upper
frame section via a joint, so that it can be swung flat against
the section side also in the pushed-in position.
The clothes and laundry holder is preferably mounted
hinged at the upper frame section.
The swivel axis of the respective joint is advantage- ~-
ously located by at least one-half the width of the clothes
and laundry holder, i.e., by the thickness of the rod, in front
of the inside of the section. This has the advantage that the
clothes and laundry holder can be swung until it is flat against
the frame section side and therefore is not visible in the rest
position from the dry room.
As an alternative thereto, the upper frame section
can have a recess for receiving the swung-in clothes and
laundry holder. In that case, the joint is located in the
recess.
For attachment to the upper frame section the clothes
and laundry holder has advantageously an angle section with
..
a horizontal leg which can be bolted to the upper frame section

1090 ~39

and a vertical leg which rests against the one side of the upper
frame section and is braced against the latter. The other
side of the vertical leg carries two brackets, on which hinge
pins are arranged opposite each other.
The joint, together with these hinge pins, is advanta-
geoùsly formed, by two holding plates of the clothes and
laundry holder. One side of the two plates rotatably surround
the two hinge pins and the other side support a carrying rod.
The holding plates, which are adjacent to each other,
surround the two hinge pins and also surround the inner end
of the carrying rod in a chamber. The connection between the
holding plates and the carrying rod is established by bolting
the plates to the rod.
Advantageously, one holding plate has at least one
hollow post with an internal thread, while the other holding
plate has a hole opposite the hollow post. Furthermore, the
inner end of the carrying rod has a hole accepting the hollow
post, and the two holding plates are connected to the inner
end of the carrying rod by a screw which is screwed
through the hole of the one holding plate into the hollow
post of the other holding plate. The indicated design of
the angle section, the two holding plates and the carrying rod
makes it possible in a particularly simple manner to assemble
the joint, and to hold at the same time the carrying rod by
placing the two holding plates at the same time around the
hinge pins and around the carrying rod, and by then screwing
them together.
In order that the clothes and laundry holder occupies
clearly defined positions, it is advantageous to arrange
detent ribs and detent slots in such a manner that the clothes
and laundry holder snaps-in in the two rest positions parallel

to the upper frame section as sell as in the operating position

.

- 5 -

1090739

which is perpendicular to the upper frame section. The detent
ribs and the detent slots are advantageously arranged at the
surfaces facing each other of the two brackets and of the end
faces of the holding plates resting against these bracket
surfaces. With this design, the two brackets are sprung apart
when the detent is released, so that the spring force of the
brackets causes the snap-in action into the three detent ~-
positions. The detent slots are advantageously arranged at
the-end faces of the holding plates, since the gap between the
two holding plates is already available for realizing two
slots.
From a manufacturing point of view it is particularly
- simple to make the carrying rod as a hollow section, preferably
as an extruded hollow aluminum section with rectangular cross
section. A terminating plug is press-fitted into the open outer
end of the carrying rod. The upward-extending flange of the
former prevents clothes hangers from sliding off. -
To deter suspended clothes hangers from moving along
the carrier rod, the latter has holes in its upper support
surface, into which plastic plugs are placed. These plastic
plugs prevent the clothes hangers from sliding.
The fabrication of the individual parts of the
clothes and laundry holder according to the invention is
particularly simple if the angle section, the two holding
plates, the terminating plug and the plastic plug are injection-
molded of plastic. The carrying rod is advantageously an
extruded aluminum section.
The invention will be explained in further detail
in the following with the aid of the embodiment examples
shown in the drawings.
FIG. 1 shows a shower partition in the form of a

sliding partition with the upper frame section 12 as the guide

1090'739

rail. The shower partition designated generally by
numeral 10 has lateral posts 14 and 16 which can be connected,
directly or via connecting sections, to room walls or to
further sectional shower partitions oriented perpendicularly
to the shower partition 10. The shower partition 10 further
has a lower guide rail 18 and three sliding doors 20 which
are hung in the frame section 12 designed as a guide rail,
and are guided in or at the lower guide rail 18, secured against
transversal displacement out of the plane of the panel. A
clothes or laundry holder 22 is held at the upper frame
section 12. A piece of clothing 26, for instance, a shirt,
is hung on a clothes hanger 24, which in turn is hung on
holder 22.
In FIG. 2, the clothes and laundry holder 22 is
designed in the form of a rod and is connected via a joint 28
(hinged about the geometric swivel axis 30) and via a corres-
ponding joint mounting 32 to the upper frame section 12. The
joint mounting 32 can be bolted or cemented to the upper frame
section 12 or also integrated permanently in the frame section
12.
FIG. 3 shows that it is advantageous to have the
swivel axis 30 of the joint 28 located by at least one-half
the width b of the clothes and laundry holder 22 in front of
the side 34 of the section facing the shower room side. In
that case, rest positions (shown in dashed-dotted lines)
of the clothes and laundry holder 22 are possible, laying
against the section side 34. In the rest position the holder
22 is out of the way when taking a shower and also is not
visible from the dry room side. In line with the last-mentioned
esthetic advantage, it is still more advantageous to locate
the joint 28 and the holder 22 in the rest position in a

recess in the upper frame section.

`-- 1090~39

FIG. 4 illustrates an embodiment similar to FIG. 3
except that the upper frame section 12 has a recess 36 for
receiving the swung-in clothes and laundry holder 22.
Further embodiments of the swing-out clothes and
laundry holder within the scope of the invention are possible,
for instance, designing the holder as a clamped bar which
extends in the lengthwise direction of the upper frame section,
is hinged about its upper longitudinal edge and obtains its
clamping force by a spring, or acts as a sticky fastener due to
a covering with a suitable te~tile fabric.
The clothes holder as assembled according to the
invention is shown in FIGS. 5 and 6. In the sectioned regions,
FIG. 6 shows a cross section taken along the line VI-VI of
FIG. 5. In the central unsectioned parts, FIG. 6 is a top view
of the holder of FIG. 5.
The clothes and laundry holder is assembled as follows:
The holes of the inner and 66 of the carrying rod 60 -
are pushed on the corresponding hollow posts 68 and 70 (see
FIG. 11) of the first holding plate 56. The hinge pins 52 and
54 (FIGS. 7 and 8) of the angle section 38 are inserted into
the half-cylindrical recesses (which together form the cylin- -
drical hole 97 as shown in FIG. 14). The second holding plate
58 is put on so that the inner end 66 of the carrying rod 60
and the hinge pins 52 and 54 of the angle section 38 are
enclosed between the two holding plates. Finally, screws are
screwed through the holes 72 and 74 of the second holding plate
58 into the hollow posts 68 and 70 of the first holding plate
and in this manner, the four mentioned parts are securely
connected to each other. Finally, the terminating plug 100
is plugged into the open outer end of the carrying rod 60.
In the assembly, it should be noted that according
to FIG. 5, the flange 102 of the terminating plug 100, the

plastic plugs 106, 108, 110, 112, 114 and 116 as well as the
horizontal leg 40 are arranged at the top, while the detent
ribs and the detent slots are at the bottom.
FIG. 7 shows the joint mounting 32 as an angle
section 38, see FIGS. 5 and 6, as seen from the side. The
angle section 38 is bolted from above to the upper frame
section 32 (FIG. 2), with an upper horizontal leg 40, in which
a hole 41, shown in cross section, is arranged. One side 44
of the vertical leg 42 of the angle section 38 then rests
against the upper frame section and is braced there. The
other side 46 of the vertical leg 42 has two brackets 48
and 50. The upper bracket 48 is a continuation of the horizon-
tal leg 40 and lies in the same plane as the latter. The
lower bracket 50 is arranged in a parallel plane shifted down.
A hinge pin 52 protrudes downward from the upper bracket 48.
The lower bracket 50 carries the upward-projecting hinge pin
54. The two hinge pins 52 and 54 are arranged rotation-
symmetrically to the joint axis 30.
FIG. 8 shows the angle section 38 shown in FIG. 7
in a view toward the side 46. The two hinge pins 52 and 54
which are arranged on the bracket surfaces 92 and 94 of the
brackets 48 and 50, can also be seen here.
FIG. 9 shows the cross section taken along line A-B
of FIG. 7, the vertical leg 42 is shown in cross section and
the hinge pin 54 in top view. On the lower bracket surface
94, four detent ribs 76, 78, 80 and 82 are seen, of which the
two detent ribs 80 and 76 are arranged parallel to the plane
of the vertical leg 42, while the other two detent ribs 78
and 82 are perpendicular to the vertical leg. The height
of these detent ribs can be seen from FIGS. 7 and 8 r The height
is, for instance, about lmm.
FIGS. 11 and 12 show the two holding plates 56 and

_ g _

109~ 39

58 from the side with which they are placed together, i.e.,
FIGS. 11 and 12 show the insides of the two holding plates.
FIGS. 10 and 13 show views of the two holding plates from the
direction in which the holding rod 60 protrudes from the
assembled holding plates.
In FIG. 10 is seen the chamber 62 in which is
disposed the hollow post 68, which has an internal thread. In
the view of FIG. 11, it will be noted that in addition to the
hollow post 68, another hollow post 70 is provided. The holes
72 and 84 disposed in recess or chamber 64 of the holding
plate 58 shown in FIGS. 12 and 13 line up with the two hollow
posts 68 and 70.
Both holding plates 56 and 58 each have an end face
96 at top and bottom. In FIG. 14, the two holding plates
are shown in a placed-together position, the two end faces 96
join to form a single surface which surrounds a cylindrical hole
97. Both holding plates surround such a hole, at top and
bottom into which holes the hinge pins 52 and 54 fit and form
the joint.
A number of slots 84, 86, 88 and 90 are arranged in
the end face of the two placed-together holding plates, around
the hole 97. Their arrangement and dimensions correspond to
the detent ribs 76, 78, 80 and 83 or FIGS. 7, 8 and 9 in such
a way that the clothes and laundry holder can snap into two
rest positions parallel to the upper frame section and into
one operating position perpendicular to the upper frame section. -
Snapping out of the detent is made possible by the spring
- action of the brackets 48 and 50 which cause the detent action
in the detent positions by their spring force.
FIG. 15 shows the carrying rod 60. Holes are made
in the upper support surface 104. Plastic plugs 106, 108, 110,

112, 114 and 116 sit in these holes. The fit of the plug 114 -

-- 10 --

in the associated hole is shown better in cross section. The
plug 116 is shown in a pulLed-out position rom which its
mushroom shape can readily be seen~ FIG. 16 shows a front
view of the carrying rod 6~ in which the box-like hollow sec- ~-
tion can be seen.
A terminating plug 100, which is shown in a longitudinal
cross section in FIG. 18 and in a front view in FIG. 17, is
plugged into the outer open end 98 (FIGS. 5 and 6) of the
carrying rod 60. This pLug has on the one side four ribs
which fill the rectangular inside contour of the carrying rod
with clamping action and provide a secure fit of the termi-
nating plug~ This is ollowed by a terminating surface 101, the
upper part of which orms a flange 102. This flange prevents
suspended clothes hangers from sliding over the end of the
carrying rod and falling down.
Although the invention is illustrated and described herein
as embodied in an-upper frame section of a shower partition
with clothes and laundry holder, it is nevertheless not
intended to be limited to the details shown, since various
modifications may be made therein without departing from the
spirit of the invention and within the scope and range of
equivalents of the claims.
