SPECIFICATION
This invention relates to trash bag holders, and
is more paxticularly concerned with collapsible, sel~
supporting trash bag holders which may be pressed into the
ground and readily moved about a yard. ;
L. L. Branthover, in U. S. Patent No. 2,149~042,

provides a knockdown trash receptable in which a ring has
passages for relèasably receivins support legs. A trash
bag has loops sewn at the opening thereof to be placeA over
~ the upper ends of the legs to hold open and support the ~ ;

946,108 disclose floor-supported racks for holding mail
bags in which handles of the mail bags hook over support
arms.
U. S. Patent No. 214,036 discloses a pivotaIly
mounted ring in a railway postal car for holding~mail bags.
Modern trash bags, particu1~arly the plastic~trash
bags of 2-4 mil thickness, cannot have support~hand1ss~or~
rings as required~;in the above patents. A1so, because~the
trash outwardly distorts such bags, they are undesirabla

U. S. Patent No. 2,455,729 discloses a hand truck

~of a trash bag to different locations about a yard~; however,~

According to ~he present invention there is provided a trash bag
apparatus for holding a trash bag upright and open to receive trash,
comprising: leg means including an upper end and a lower end, said lower .
end comprising pointed means for pierci.ng the ground; a loop adapted to ~ ~
receive and hold the open upper end of a trash bag; and hinge means pivotally ~
connecting said loop and said leg means at said upper ends so that said loop
is alternately pivotal to a storage position substantially pal~allel to said
leg means and to a bag holding position substantially perpendicular to said ~:
leg meansJ said hinge means comprising first and second U-shaped members ` .
; 10 each including a base and a pair of legs, said bases connected to said upper
end of said leg means and to said loop respectively, said legs extending
parallel to each other, and a hinge pin connecting said legs, said base o
said U-shaped member which is connected ko said upper end of said leg means
being connected at the extremity of said upper end and spaced from the other
base such that said loop is pivotal over said extremity so that said other
: base engages said leg means on the side opposite the connection of said one
base to said leg means.

Referring to Figures 1 and 2, a trash bag holder is generally
illustra~ed at 10 as comprising a leg 12 which supports a loop 14 at its
upper end. A trash bag 16, such as a 4 mil plastic bag is shown, primarily
in phantorll, as bei.ng held open by a plurality of clips 18.

The leg 12 comprises a pair of rods 20,22 which
are secured together, as by weldiny, and which include
spaced lower ends 23 with polnted portions 26 adapting the
legs to be pressed into the ground. Stability is provided
by a rung 24 welded between the lower ends of the rods.
As illust.rated in FIGS~ l and 2, the leg 12 and ~
the loop 14 are connected together by a hinge 28, shown in :.
detail in FIGS. 3 and 4.
~: Referring to FIGS. 3 and 4, the hinge 28 is seen
as comprising a first U-shaped member including a hase 30 ::
which is welded to the rods 20,22, and a pair of arms 32.
A second U-shaped member includes a base 34 which is~welded
: to the loop 14, and a pair of arms 36. The arms 32 and 36
are pivotally connected by a pin, rivet, bolt or the like
38. In the position illustrated, the loop, via the base
34, bears against the leg rods 20,22; when rotated over the
~- upper ends of the leg rods, the~ loop extends~parallel~to ;~
` the leg and is suspended from the hinge as illustrated in~ ;
phantom in FIG. 4.
