ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION

The invention provides a lift-dumping device for emptying
containers into receptacles, particularly for emptying garbage
containers into garbage trucks, comprising a lifting device for
picking up the container, said lifting device being secured to at
least one swivel arm, tiltable about a horizontal axis, which
swivel arm is supported on a base plate secured to a feeding device
and connected to a respective piston-and-cylinder unit, the piston-
and-cylinder unit having an initial position in which it lies
substantially parallel to the associated swivel arm said piston-
and-cylinder unit engaging a lug located at the lower end of the
swivel arm and projecting beyond a plane parallel to the swivel
arm, said plane containing the swivel axis of the swivel arm, the
piston-and-cylinder unit further abutting against said base plate
secured to the feeding device, whereby an actuation of said piston-
and-cylinder unit, said swivel arm tilts about said horizontal axis

THE EMBODIMENTS OF INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A lifting-dumping apparatus for emptying a container
into a collecting container, for example for emptying a refuse
container into a refuse collecting vehicle, the apparatus
comprising:
(i) a bearing plate device;
(ii) one or a pair of pivoting arms carried by the
bearing plate device for pivoting upwardly about
a horizontal axis;
(iii) a support frame for a container to be emptied,
which frame is mounted at the free end of the
pivoting arm or pair of arms and which frame is
tiltable about a tilting axis parallel to the
said horizontal axis;
(iv) one or a pair of cylinder-piston assemblies for
moving the pivoting arm or pair of arms and for
moving the support frame, the said assembly or
pair of assemblies being pivotally mounted on
the bearing plate device and extending substan-
tially parallel to the pivoting arm or pair of
arms;
(v) one or a pair of links for moving the support
frame relative to the pivoting arm or pair of
arms, the said one link or pair of links being
pivotally connected to the bearing plate device
and to the support frame; and
(vi) a fixed projection at the free end of the or each
pivoting arm, which projection extends from the
arm at that side of the arm remote from the
support frame and which projection extends
beyond the plane containing the said horizontal








and tilting axes, the or each cylinder-piston
assembly being articulated to the or each
respective projection at a point spaced from
the said plane, and the link or pair of links
being connected to the bearing plate device for
pivoting about a fixed axis parallel to the
horizontal axis.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein
(i) the support frame comprises one or a pair of
bell-crank type levers, the or each lever in the
lower or start position of the frame having one
arm substantially horizontal and the other arm
substantially vertical;
(ii) the or each lever is rockable about the said
tilting axis which is disposed at the adjacent
ends of the lever arms;
(iii) the or each link is articulated to the free end
of the or each substantially vertical lever arm;
and
(iv) the or each horizontal lever arm constitutes a
container-supporting arm of the support arm.
3. Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the link
or pair of links has its point of connection to the bearing plate
device so disposed in relation to the length of the substantially
vertical lever arm that the initial upward movement of the
pivoting arm or pair of arms is matched by an approximately equal
downward movement of the support frame.
4. Apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 3,
wherein the or each piston-cylinder assembly has a single piston
guided in the cylinder which is pivotally mounted on the bearing
plate device at a distance from its end.
5. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the





bearing plate device has first and second parallel bearing plates,
the relevant pivoting arm and piston-cylinder assembly being
accommodated between and pivotally mounted on both plates.
6. Apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the
bearing plate device has a third bearing plate parallel to the first
bearing plate and on the side thereof remote from the second
bearing plate the relevant link being mounted on and between
the first and third bearing plates.
7. Apparatus according to claim 6, having a pair of
said pivoting arms and a pair of said links, wherein the second bearing
plate is mounted on the outside and the third bearing plate is
mounted on the inside of the first bearing plate.
8. Apparatus according to claim 2, having a pair of
said pivoting arms wherein, between the pivoting arms, there is a
funnel-like abutment and guide plate which during tipping moves
into the aperture of the collecting container.
9. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the
abutment and guide plate is mounted on the substantially vertical
lever arms.
10. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the or
each link has a bifurcated end engaging over both sides of a
bearing plate of the bearing plate device.
11. Apparatus according to claim 1, having a cover-
opening means mounted above the aperture of the collecting
container, which means has obliquely upwardly extending guide
rails along which run studs mounted on a cover of the collecting
container.
12. Apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the
guide rails are connected to the bearing plate device by carrier
rails.
13. Apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 3,
wherein the support frame has carrier devices for handling

different sized containers a combined lid opening device being
provided for such containers.
14. Apparatus according to claim 11 or claim 12,
wherein the guide rails constitute an opening device for a larger
container while a catch and abutment frame, pivotable against the
action of an elastic element, is provided as a lid opening means
for a smaller container.

The invention relates to a lift-dumping device for
emptying containers into receptacles, particularly for emptying
garbage containers into garbage-collecting trucks, comprising a
lifting device for pic]cing-up the container, said lifting device
being secured to a swivel arm or to a pair of swivel arms, said
swivel arm or pair of swivel arms being tiltable abou-t a horizontal
axis and being supported on a feeding device and, for tilting said
swivel arm or pair of swivel arms being connected to a cylinder-
piston unitorto a pair of cylinder~piston units.
In the known devices of this kind the cylinder-piston
unit or pair of cylinder-piston units for tilting the swivel arm
or pair of swivel arms abut against the feeding device at an
interval below the support of the swivel arm or pair of swivel arms
(See German Utility Patent 18 56 975, German Patent 10 21 786, laid-

open German Specification 12 66 213, Austrian Patent 228 719,
Austrian Patent 1089 565.) This construction has the disadvantage
that a substantial portion of the feeding device is integrated in
the path of force between the support of the cylinder-piston unit
and the bearing of the swivel arm and, therefore, it must be corres
pondingly sturdy and heavy. A further important disadvantage of
;~, this known construction lies in that in garbage trucks such a low
support of the cylinder-piston unit results in a substantial loss
in,ground clearance. Since the feeding device on garbage trucks
; lies lower with increasing load and corresponding load on the
springs and since, moreover, garbage trucks must also drive on
~ uneven terrain, for example, for emptying into the dump, a ground
i clearance as large as possible, particularly for loaded vehicles,
is desirable.
Therefore, it is the aim of the invention to create a

support of the cylinder-piston unit and t~e bearing of the swivel
arm is short and a ground clearance of the vehicle~ as large as
possible also in the loaded state is assured.
According to the present invention there is provided
a lifting-dumping apparatus for emptying a container into a
collecting container, for example for emptying a refuse container
into a refuse collecting vehicle, the apparatus comprising:
(i) a bearing plate device; (ii) one or a pair of pivoting
arms carried by the bearing plates device for pivoting upwardly
about a horiziontal axis; ~iii) a support frame for a container
to be emptied, which frame is mounted at the free end of the
pivoting arm or pair of arms and which frame is tiltable about a
tilting axis parallel to the said horizontal axis; (iv) one or
a pair of cylinder-piston assemblies for moving the pivoting
arm or pair of arms and for moving the support frame, the said
; assembly or pair of assemblies being pivotally mounted on the
bearing plate device and extending substantially parallel to the
pivoting arm or pair of arms; (v) one or a pair of links for
moving the support frame relative to the pivoting arm or pair
of arms, the said one link or pair of links being pivotally
connected to the bearing plate device and to the supportframe;
and ~vi) a fixed projection at the free end of the or each
pivoting arm, which projection extends from the arm at that side
of the arm remote from the support frame and which projection
extends beyond the plane containing the said horizontal and
~ tilting axes, the or each cylinder-piston assembly being
;~ articulated to the or each respective projection at a point
spaced from the said plane, and the link or pair of links being
connected to the bearing plate device for pivoting about a fixed
axis parallel to the horizontal axis.
Apart from achiev~ng this aim, the invention creates~
a particularly compact lift-dumping dev~ce which assures optimum

ground clearance while the tilting force produced by the cylinder-
piston unit is developed in a favourable way. The base plate
constitutes a central element, which absorbs the supporting forces
of the cylinder-piston unit and closes the path of force with
the bearing of the swivel arm. This element can be so constructed
that it is solid and strong without having to increase the weight
of the entire device excessively.
In the known lift-dumping devices, in which the lift-
ing device is movably attached to the swivel arm or to the
pair of swivel arms and the motion of the lifting device is ~~
derived from the tilting motion of the swivel arm or of the pair
of swivel arms, it is of course necessary to install the
support of this device, which der;ves the lifting motion from
the tilting motion, at an interval from the bearing of the
swivel arm or pair of swivel arms. However, heretofore the
support of the device deriv;ng the lifting motion from the
tilting motion was provided on a wall of the feeding device.
- This makes it in turn necessary to construct parts of the feeding
device particularly strong and solid. However, as a

favourable development and improvement of the invention the devicc
deriving the motion of the lifting device from the tilting motion
of the swivel arm or pair of swivel arms can also abut against the
; base plate. The func-tion of the base pl-~te as a central force-
absorbing and force~transmitting element is thus f~rther emphasizecl
and completed. By centralizing all these hcarinc3s and supports on
the base plate the operation of the device is substantially safer
and the danger of accidents is su~stantially reduced.
In an embodiment of the invention the device deriving
the lifting motion from the tilting motion can be a guide rod,
which is tiltably supported with one end on the base plate and wit~
the other end on an arm of a supporting arm for the container.
Said supporting arm forms the lifting device and is designed in
the form of an angle lever and is supported on the swivel arm. In
the lower starting position of the swivel arm or of the pair of

swivel arms the angle lever arm of the supporting arm which is
. connected to the guide rod can be approximately vertically directeci
upwards while the guide rod with its fulcrum is so adapted to the
length of the upwardly directed angle lever arm, that the initial,
upwardly directed ti]ting motion of the swivel arm or of the pair
of swivel arms is converted into an approximately identical counter~
3 ~ tilting motion of the supporting arm in a downward direction.
Thus, a change of the initial tilting motion of the swivel arm is
converted into a lifting motion of the supportinc3 arm in a particu-
larly simple way.
Within the scope of the invention it is particularly
advantageous if the cylinder-piston unit is provided with a simple
' piston guided in the cylinder and if the cylinder is tiltably
supported on the base plate at an interval from its end. The desicJn
~30 of the cylinder~piston unit with simple cylinder and piston has the
a advantage of a substantially less costly and simpler design as
B compared with a telescopic position of cylinder. However, ~t

design a substantially greater cylinder length is required. sy
supporting the cylinder-piston unit on the base plate and thus
near the swivel axis of the swivel arm or of the pair of swivel
arms the required long length of the cylinder can be compensatcd
for without difficulties in that the bearing elements required for
the tiltable support of the cylinder can be shlfted from the
cylinder end to the centre region of the cylinder length.
In order to reinforce substantially and to improve the
bearing and the support within the scope of the invention, the base
B plate may be provided with a second base plate parallelling to saic~
first base plate, the swivel arm and the cylinder-piston being
installed between the two plates and supported in the two plates.
Not only are the bearing and the support of both the swivel arm and
the cylinder-piston unit substantially improved in this manner but
a more or less symmetric layout of path of force between the suppo~
of the cylinder-piston unit and the bearing of the swivel arm is
also created.
In lift-dumping devices according to the invention which
are fitted with a device forderiving the motion of the lifting
device from the tilting motion of the swivel arm it is possible,
within the scope of the invention, to provide the base plate on
both sides with a second base plate at an interval parallelly
; thereto, the swivel arm and the cylinder-piston unit on one side
of the base plate being supported therein and in the second base
plate and the guide rod of the device converting the tilting motion
into the lifting motion on the other side of the base plate being .
supported therein and in the second base plate.
However, the guide rod can also be provided with a for~e(l
end which extends over both sides of the base plate, which is
lengthened if required. The separate second base plate for the
guide rod can thus be dispensed with.

In lift-dumping devices according to the invention which
have a pair of swivel arms it is expedient to install the second
base plate, which additionally supports the swivel arm and the
cylinder-piston unit, on the outside and the second hase plate
additionally supporting the guide rod on the inside. In lift-
dumping devices according to the invention with a pair of swivel
arms receiving between themselves the containers to be emptied a
funnel-shaped abutment and baffle which extends into the feed
opening when garbage is dumped in can be installed between the
swivel arms. This abutment and baffle secures the beariny and the
support of both the swivel arms and the cylinder and piston units
on the base plates. In particular said funnel-shaped ahutment and
~affle prevents dirt or garbage from c;e~ting to the base pla-tes.
In the design of the lift-dumping device having the guide rod as
the device deriving the lifting motion from the tilting motion and
having supporting arms in the form angle levers tiltably supported
on the swivel arms as the lifting device it can be expedient to
install the abutment and baffle on the supporting arms, preferably
on the angle lever arms, which are directed upwards in the starting
position of the swivel arms.
The invention will now be described in more detail, hy
`~ way of example only, with reference to the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a lift-dumping device accordiny to the
invention in lateral view, in the lower end position.
Figure 2 shows a device according to Figure 1 in the
upper end tilting position.
Figure 3 shows a device according to Figure 1 in front
view without garbage container.
Figure 4 shows an enlarged represen-tation of a base-plat~
arranged in another embodiment.

arranged approximately parallel to the swivel arm 2. The base
plates 5, 6 and 7 arranged parallel to each other and secured
directly to the feeding device 4 serve as the upper fulcrum for
the cylinder~piston unit 1, the swivel arms 2 and the guide rod
3, the function o~ which will be explainecl hereafter (se~ Fig. 3).
~ s is evident from the front view of Figure 3, the base
plates 5, 6 and 7 (which function as central force-absorbing and
force-transmitting elements) are arranged on both sid~s below the
feed opening 4, the axis 8 of the corresponding swivel arm 2 being
integrated by the base plates 5 and 6 while -the axis 9 of the
guide rod 3 is supported by the plates 6 and 7. The upper fulcrum
10 of the cylinder-piston unit 1 is disposcd bel.ow thereof between
the base plates 5 and 6 in the manner of a cross pivot pin.
A lug 12, which is intended for supporting the piston
rod la of the cylinder~piston unit l and extends beyond the lower
swivel axis 11, is disposed in the lower region of each swive]
arm 2. As is evident from Figure 2, the cross pivot pin 10, is

This measure results in a total length of the cylinder-
piston unit which is greater than the interval between the fulcum -
10 and the lug 12. -,
As mentioned hereinbefore, the guide rods 3 whlch derive ~ '
the lifting motion from the tilting motion are tiltably supported ::
with their upper ends between the base plates 5, 7, the lower ends :~
being pivoted to the upwardly directed portion of the angle lever
~ arm 13 while at the same time, the corresponding s~pporting arm 14
;~ and the corresponding swivel arm 2 are coaxially supported at thi.s
:30 fulcrum. The horizontal portion of the angle lever 13 thus changes
over into the supporting arm 14.

The sequence of motion and operation of the tilting device
is as follows:

On actu~ting the cylinder-piston unit 1 th~ p~ir of
swivel arms 2 moves upwards~ l~owever, the supporting arms 14 at
first remain in a suhstantially horizontal position. I'he garbage
container 15 is picked up and lifted vertica11y upwards but with-
out carrying out a tilting motion. This mcans that the initial
upwardly directed tilting motio~ of the swivel arms is converted
by the guide rod into an approximately identical counter-tilting
motion of the supporting arms in the downward direction. Up to
this moment the cylinder-piston units 1, the swivel arms 2 and the
guide rods 3 sti11 are parallel to each other. Only on exceeding
the substantially horizontal line of the swivel arms 2 is the motion
of the supporting arms 4,~ which is derived from the tilting motion
of the pair of the swivel arms, also converted into a tiltinc) motio~
in such a way that the guide rod 3 presses the upwardly directed
portion of the angle lever arm 13 downwards and in the course of
the further upward tilting motion by the guide rods 3 the supportin~
arms 14 are tilted relative to the swivel arms 2 like a dumping
motion, the container being tilted towards the feed opening 4 as
is evident from Figure 2. During the lifting motion -the container
15 joins the funnel-shaped abutment and baffle 16 arranged between
the two swivel arms 2 and secured to the supporting arms. This
abutment and baffle 16 secures the bearing and the support of both
the swivel arms and the cylindex-piston units on the base plates,
that is to say, in such a way that dirt or garbage are prevented
from getting to the base plates when the container is emptied.
While the cylinder-piston unit and the swivel arms 2 are supported
on the base plates 5 and 6 in the manner de.scribed hereinbefore
the guide rod 23 is secured directly to the base plate 6, or
supported thereon, by means of a forked piece 24 at the upper end
of the guide rod 23, said forked piece 24 extending over both sides
of the base plate 6.

As is evident from Figure 1 and 2, particularly ~rom

Figure 2, containers of different si~es can be picked up and
emptied by the lift-du~ping device according to the invention.
The lid 15a of the container 15 is opened by means of the lid-
i opening device 17, which picks up the lid 15a with its fork-
shaped end pieces 17a on the pinions 15h and pushes it back
during the swinging-tiltin~ motion. Ilowever, durin~ the swinging-
tilting motion the pinions l9b of the container 19 which are
, disposed on the lid 19a pass along the U-shaped guide rails 20
arranged on both sides of the feeding device 4, the~ lid l9a being
opened by the guide rails 20 which rise rearward. In order to
j avoid friction, the pinions l9b can be pivo-ted in -this case.
The supporting arms 14, 18 designed for the different
containers 15, 19 are so supported that they are vertically tilt-
able and, as shown dash-dotted in Figure 3, they can be folded

during the inward travel. However, for reasons of clarity the
supporting arms 18 are shown in Figure 3 not folded but unfolded.

invention in conjunction with the individual fulcrums of the
corresponding units and devices a particularly compact lift- -

dumping device is created. It assures optimum ground clearance
along with favourable development of the tilting force produced
by the cylinder-piston unit. The base plates constitute a
central element which absorbs the supporting forces of the cylinder-
piston unit and closes the path of force with the bearing. Despite
the solid construction of these plates the weight of the entire
device is not substantially increased.
