English Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

A stucco mix comprising in weight % between 15% and 30%
water, 15% and 30% cellulose glue, 35% and 55% calcium carbonate,
3% and 30% linseed oil, 0% and 3% resin and 0% and 0.5% of a
siccative. The preferred mix contains about 20% water, 25% cellu-
lose glue, 55% granular calcium carbonate, 4% boiled linseed oil,
1.5% resin and 0.5% of a cobalt siccative.

Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive
property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:

1. A stucco mix comprising in weight % between 15% and 30%
water, 15% and 30% cellulose glue, 35% and 55% calcium carbonate and
3% and 30% linseed oil.

2. A stucco mix as defined in claim 1, further including up
to 3% resin and up to 0.5% of a siccative.

3. A stucco mix as defined in claim 1, wherein the composition
is about 20% water, 25% cellulose glue, 50% granular calcium carbonate,
4% boiled linseed oil, and further including 1.5% resin and 0.5% of a
cobalt siccative.
4. A stucco mix as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, further
comprising between 5% and 30% of a filler selected from the group consistin
consisting of sand and sawdust.

5. A stucco mix as defined in claim 1 or 2, further including
an additional mixture admixed with the above mix in an amount of about
10% by weight and consisting of about 1 part by weight of plaster of
Paris and 2 parts by weight of a slow drying plaster.

6. A stucco mix as defined in claim 2 or 3, wherein said
resin is a varnish.

Description

:

This invention relates to a stucco mix ~or application onconcrete; brick, wood, stone, concrete blocks, asbe6tos cenent,
masonits, plywood~ gyproc and most interior sur~aces,
Stucco is a known wall couering material which is extensively
used in construction~ It is generally made o~ marble dust~ slacked
lirne~ chalk and a oindsr. The conventional stucco is however getting
expensiue and it would be desirable to use 1QS8 costly ingradients in
the composition to reduce the price.
Applicant haa surprisingly foun~ that a good stucco o~
much lower oost m~y be madeO Th0 stucco mix~ in accordance with the
invention, comprises in weight ~ between 15~ and 30~ water~ 15~ and
30~ cellulos~ glue~ 35~ and 55~ calcium carbonate~ 3~ and 30~ lins~ed
oil~ 0% and 3~ resin and 0% and 0.5~ or a siccative.
Tha stucco mix pre~erably comprises about 20~ water~ 25~ cellu-
lose glue, 50~ granular calcium carb~nate~ 4~ boiled linseed oil~ 0.5
resin and 0.5~ o~ a cobalt siccativs.
Of the above ingredients o~ the composition, cellulose glue
is a binder containing 100~ cellulose in powder form which ~orms a
gel with water~ calcium carbonatu is a ~iller which is made o~
marble dust or chalk~ linseed oil is ussd to rendor the composition
more consistent and to prevent cracking~ resin is a varnish used
to harden the composition and the cobalt siccative or dryer is
ussd to more rapidly dry the composition~ more particularly~ linseed
oil and the resin.
Linseed oil is an important element of the composition as it
allows the mixture to remain more consistent. If more than 10~ by
weight of linseed oil i5 used, the composition tends to turn yellow.
Thus, the content of linseed oil must not exceed 10~ for white
stucco. However, it may be up to 30~ when pigments are added

to mal<e a composition other than white. I
It will be notsd that the rr3sin ancl siccativa tf~ay be ls~t out
of` the conlposition for csrtain appl ;cations whsre ths drying tim~
or tlle toughnsss of the composition are not critical.
For thick coating of the ord~r of l/Z", sand or sawdust may be
added to ths abovg composition in an amount of about 57~0 to 30~ by
weight. Sawdust go~s well with ths cslluloss glue~ sinca both are wood
products.
Ths above composition is generally whits but it may b~ colorsd
by adding pigmsnts. Coloration may bs dons by ths user or in ths
f actory .
In making the composition, calcium carbonate and water ar3 ~irst
mixsd togsther and csllulose glus addsd to ths mixturs. The cslluloss
glue may also be mixed with watsr and calciurn carbonats, thsn added to
the mixturr30 Linsesd oil and the othsr elsmsnts of ths composition ars
thsn added to coinplets ths mixture. Ths stucco mix is prsfsrably agsd
for a fsw wl3sks bsfors being put in contain~rs to psrrnit ths csllulose
91UB to mors thoroughly wr3t ths calciurn carbonats powdsr~
To obtain a mix which remains workablæ for a longsr tims~ to ths
2EI above mixture, ons adds 10% by wsight of the following additional
mixturo:
1 part by wsight of plastsr of Paris
2 parts by weight of a slo~d drying plastsr, such as ths ons
sold under ths trad~ name "Gold ûust", by Domtar Inc~
The abovs-disclossd stucco mix may also be applisd to concrete,
bricl<, wood, stonu, asbsstos c~tnsnt, masonit~3~ plywood, gyproc, and
rnost interior surfaces. The surfacss must bs dry~ clean and froe of
dust, oil~ grsasr~, rust~ mildew, chalk~ looss pAint~ stc. The holss
and other irnpsrfections in the surfacss to bs coated must be prsuiously
filled with a suitable bindsr. It is also prsferabls to apply a primsr,
such as cr~llulose glus~ to the surfacs to be coatsd~ in order to seal
the pores.

The above-disclosed stucco May be applied using a trowel/, a metal
spatula, a krlife coater, a ~ponge, a spray gun, ~ roller or a broom.
However, when sawdust is addud to the cornposition, a ~pray gun
cannot be used.
The drying time of ths abovs stucco MiX iS betwsen 10 and 24 hours,
depending on the composition an~ on ths amount o~ siccativ~ added thereto.
Th~ stucco coating9 wh~n dry, may 08 painted with latex or oil
paintO It may also be washed with water~ If it is dasir~d to rsmous
ths old stucco coating made in accordance with the invention, it may
be done very simply by wetting the coating with water for about 1/2
hour and pseling off the coating with a conventional knife. The
stucco mix, in accordance with the invention9 may be usually removed
- without damaging the wall surfaces, contrary to the known stucco mix.
The equipment used ~or applying the stucco mix may also be
cleaned easily with warm water if this is done immediately a~ter use.
Although the above disclosed stucco is normally used for wall
covering, it may also be used as a joint or crack ~iller.
