English Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
An oral rinse having anti-hemorrhagic and anti-inflammatory
properties includes, as active ingredients, a homogeneous, synergistic
mixture of approximately 95% of the hydrate of magnesium sulphate, approxi-
mately 4% sodium bicarbonate, the remainder being potassium chloride or a
mixture of equal parts of potassium chloride and sodium chloride.

Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive
property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. An oral rinse comprising an homogenous mixture of from
92 to 97 percent by volume of a hydrate of magnesium sulphate, from
3 to 3 percent by volume of sodium bicarbonate, and added thereto
up to about 1 percent of at least one salt selected from the group
consisting of potassium chloride and sodium chloride.
2. An oral rinse according to claim 1, said salt being
potassium chloride.
3. An oral rinse according to claim 2, said potassium
chloride being present in the amount of approximately 1 percent.
4. An oral rinse according to claim 1, the composition
including both potassium chloride and sodium chloride.
5. An oral rinse according to claim 4, wherein both
potassium chloride and sodium chloride are present in the amount
of one half percent each.

Description

Note: Descriptions are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

- ~13~
This invention relates to an oral rinse, and in particular to an
oral rinse having anti-inflammatory and anti-hemorrhagic properties.
Usually, following periodontal surgery such as a gingivectomy, no
mouthwash or oral rinse is recommended except perhaps common table salt
and water. There are antibacterial mouthwashes avai lable such as, for
example, the one sold under the trade mark Cepacol, which contains
cetylpyridinium as an active ingredient. However, other than a mi Id anti-
bacterial action, such mouthwashes are, at best, breath fresheners.
Accordingly, there exists a need for a mouthwash or oral rinse
10 which can be used after oral surgery to reduce hemorrhaging and to promote
the healing process, and if used daily in cases where a chronic periodontal
condition exists it acts as an excellent prophylactic measure. The object
of the present invention is to provide such a rinse.
Accordingly, in its simplest form the present invention relates to
an oral rinse including a homogeneous mixture of the hydrate of magnesium
sulphate, sodium bicarbonate and potassium chloride as the active ingredients.
More specifically, the present invention relates to an oral rinse
including, as active ingredients, from 92 to 97% by volume of the hydrate of
magnesium sulphate, from 3 to 8% by volume sodium bicarbonate, the remainder
20 being potassium chloride. One preferred formulation includes equal parts of
sodium chloride and potassium chloride. The sodium chloride could be com-
pletely replaced by potassium chloride in cases where the user is on a
salt-free diet, e. 9., in cases of high blood pressure. Of course, taste and
flavour additives are added to make the rinse palatable. Such additives
include oil of peppermint and artificial sweeteners.
In use, the formulation described above is dissolved in water,
preferably warm water and used to rinse the oral cavity. It should be noted
that none of the active ingredients is toxic. The only powder oral rinses
on the market today are toxic if swal lowed and are label led as such. More-
' over, the rinse contains no prescription drugs.

The sodium bicarbonate acts as a buffering agent, adjusting the
pH of the rinse to an acceptable level.
The inventor found that the hydrate of magnesium sulphate possesses
anti-hemorrhagic and anti-inflammatory properties when administered orally in
a rinse. Such properties are enhanced by the other additives, i. e., the
potassium chloride and sodium chloride. In other words, there is synergism.
A typical formulation of the oral rinse on a small scale is as
fo I I ows:

APP ROX I MAT E
INGREDIENT % BY VOUME
8 tablespoons of the hydrate of magnesium
sulphate (MgSO4. 7H2O) U. S. P. 95. 33
1 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) 4
1/12 teaspoon of sodium chloride (NaC1) and
1/12 teaspoon of potassium chloride (KC1) or
1/6 teaspoon of sodium chloride 0. 66
2 drops of peppermint oil
4 crystals of menthol U. S. P. ground into a powder

0. 4 gram of artificial sweetener - (in this case the
sweetener is sodium cyclamate)
In the foregoing list of ingredients, the percentages by volume are
given only for active ingredients, i. e., the percentages are based on the
total volume of active ingredients only. The percentages by volume of active
ingredients can be varied by ~ 3-5%. While only two flavour and taste
ingredients are mentioned, it will be appreciated that other agents of the
type commonly used in mouthwash preparations can be incorporated in the oral
rinse of the present invention.
