APPARATUS FOR RECEIVING INCANDESCENT COKE
Abstract of the Disclosure
There is proposed an apparatus for receiving incandescent
coke from a coking chamber and conveying it to a quenching
tower which apparatus comprises a wall structure and
lining plates secured thereto with the provision for their
thermal expansion and defining jointly with a hopper the
space for incandescent coke to be conveyed. The apparatus
is adapted for installation on a carriage and removal
therefrom to unload coke at the quenching site. The
invention consists in that a spacing means in the form
of a corrugated sheet is interposed between the wall struc-
ture and the lining plates, the lining plates are joined
with one another and with the wall structure with the
aid of locking means each comprising a cover piece and a
bolt with a nut, and between a round cross-section girdle
of the hopper and bottom gates there is disposed a sealing
means having a sealing surface contacting the surface
of the girdle tangentially. Various modifications of the
spacing means, locking means, and sealing means are
presented.
The invention may be utilized in conveying incandescent
coke mainly to a dry quenching tower. It cuts down the
coke loss caused by burning and extends the service life
of the apparatus owing to an improved thermal conditions
of operation of the wall structure.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive
property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:-

1. An apparatus, for receiving incandescent coke and
conveying the same from a coking chamber to a quenching
site, comprising a wall structure which is lined with plates
of a suitable material, installed so as to provide for a
linear expansion thereof, and which defines at its bottom
portion a hopper having a discharge hole, a girdle extending
substantially circumferentially around the discharge hole,
and bottom gates movable between an opened and closed position
with respect to said discharge hole, characterized in that the
wall structure and the lining plates are installed in a
mutually spaced relationship to define a gap therebetween,
the lining plates are joined with one another and with the
wall structure by locking means and spacing members, the
girdle being round in cross section, and wherein the bottom
gates are provided with sealing members which are fixed
thereto for movement therewith, said sealing members having
at least one sealing surface disposed so that, with the
bottom gates in the closed position covering said discharge
hole, said at least one sealing surface contacts said girdle
extending tangentially with respect thereto.
2. An apparatus in accordance with claim 1,
characterized in that each spacing member is a corrugated
sheet.
3. An apparatus in accordance with claim 2,
characterized in that the ends of the corrugated sheets
overlap at the joints thereof.
4. An apparatus in accordance with claim 1,
characterized in that each spacing member is of a trough-
shaped cross-section.

5. An apparatus in accordance with claim 1
characterized in that the lining plates are installed in
a spaced relationship to define a gap therebetween and each
locking means comprises a cover piece and a bolt holding
said cover piece on the lining plates at the gap there-
between, passed between the adjacent lining plates, and
locked against axial displacement by a nut.
6. An apparatus in accordance with claim 5,
characterized in that said locking means and spacing members
are combined and comprise a bolt having an end face or a
shoulder whereon a lining plate is supported.
7. An apparatus in accordance with claim 1,
characterized in that each locking means is a hook
secured to the lining plate and holding said plate in the
preset position with respect to the wall structure, the
lining plates being installed in an overlapping relationship.

sp~ci~ically concerned with an apparatus ~or receiving incande-
scent coke f'rom a coking chamber ~nd -then transportin~
it to a quenchir~ si-teO The lnvention may be u-tilized
-to the b'est advan-tage at -the coking plants where tho
dry coke-qu~nchir~ -tcchniquc is us~d.
A-t cokir~ plants, incarl~escent coko is conv~yed
from a coking chamber to a quenching si-te mainly in cars
adapted to travel on a rail track (Teplitskij ~.G. ~t al.
Sukhoe tushenie koksa (Dry quenchir~ of coke)~ "Metal-
lurgija", Moscow, 1971, p.53). Such cars comprise a car-
riage arld an appara-tus for rcc~ivirlg incandesce~t coke,
removably mou~-tod on the carriage, ~he appara-tus ~or
receivir~ incandescent coko includes a wall structure
which is a truss f'ram~work, and lir~ing pla-tes moun-tod
on the supporti~ m~m~rs o~ th~ truss ~'ra~ work. Emplo~ed
f'or linir~ the wall s-tructure are e:ither roll~d nick~
~erous s-teel plat~s or cast heat-resista~t iron plates.
The linir~ plates are installed wi-th th~ provision
~or -th~ir li~ar expansion, i.e. with a gap -to allow

the hopper is provided with bottom gates which in -the
closed posi-tion abut against the girdle.
In prior art apparatus/ intensiv~ burning of coke
takes place during its loading and transporta-tion, leading
to a loss of coke and to a rapid heati~g of the lining
pla-tes and wall struc-ture7 which resul-ts in a premature
destruction of the la-tter. ~he burning is caused by
an air draugh-t or inleakage -through -the gap~ b~tw~en
the lining pla-te s .
In addi-tion, the gaps between the girdle sur~ace~
and the bot-tom ~ates abutting th~reagainst, occuring as
a result of inadequate adjoining -th~r~o~ :Eurther wid~n
in -the course oE s~rvic~ due to a -thermal deforma-tion oE
th~ girdle, which addi-tionally promotes -th~ air draught
or inleakage through tho gaps~
~ he pres~nt invention has for its object -to provid~
an apparatus for receivi~g incandescen-t coke, wherein the

cck~ loss by burning i~ cu-t down and the ~rcatest possible
protec-tion o~ the wall structure o~ -the appara-tus from
the thermal effect of incandescent coke is orlsur~d
by eliminating the gaps both between the ll~ing plates
and in the zo~e of ~butment o~ the bot-tom gates -to the
discharge hole.
~ his object is attained by the provision o~ an appa-
ratus for receivin~ incandescen-t cok~ and conveyin~ the
same from a coking chamb~r to a quenching site, compri~ing
a wall structure which is lined with plates of a suitable
material, installed so as to provide for -the linear
expansion thereof, and forms wi-th its lower por-tion a
hopper havi~g a di scharge hol~ and ~ramed adjacent
to the discharge hole by a girdle, and bottom gates to
close said discharge hole, wher~in, accordir~ to the
invention, -the wall structure and the lining plat~s arc
installed in a spac~d relationship -to defin~ a gap ther~-

ment of the bo-t-tom ga-te on the hopper girdle. Moreover,
eliminatin~ the æaps and interposing the spaci~g members
between the lining plat~s and the wall s-truc-ture improve
the -th~rmal condi-tions of -the wall s-truc-ture in operation
o~ the apparatus, ~thereby reducing -the thermal de~ormation
and ~xtending the se:rvice li~e of -the structure.
Interposing a corrugated sheet as -the spacir~ member
between -the lining plates and -the wall struc-ture promo-tes
the heat transfer from the lining pla-tes, thereby ~nhan-
cing their durability and addition~lly reducir~ -the
hea-ting o~ the wall s-truc-ture.

relationship so as to define a gap therebetween, and to
prevent an air in leakage, each locking means pre-ferably
includes a cover piece and a bolt holding the cover piece
on the lining plates over the gap therebetween,passed between
the adjacent lining plate~ and through the wall structure
by a nut to prevent its axial displacement.
The spacing member and the locking means may be
combined so that the spacing member is integral with the
bolt and has an end face or a shoulder whereon a lining
plate is supported.
In accordance with another embodiment of the
invention, the lining plates may be installed in an over-
lapping relationship, in this event~ every locking means
preferably has the form of a hook secured to a lining plate
to hold the latter in the re~uired position with respect to
the wall structure.
In one aspect of the present invention there is
provided an apparatus for receiving incandescent coke and
conveying the same from a coking chamber to a quenching site,
comprising a wall structure which is lined with plates of a
suitable material, installed so as to provide for a linear
expansion thereof, and which defines at its bottom portion
a hopper having a discharge hole, a girdle extending sub- ~~
stantially circumferentially around the discharge hole,
and bottom gates movable between an opened and closed position
with respect to said discharge hole, characterized in that the
wall structure and the lining plates are installed in a
mutually spaced relationship to define a gap therebetween,
the lining plates are joined with one another and with the
wall structure by locking means and spacing members, the
girdle being round in cross-section,and wherein the bottom
gates are provided with sealing members which are fixed
thereto for movement therewith, said sealing members having
at least one sealing surface dis~osed so that, with the
bottom gates in the closed position covering said discharge

hole, said at least one sealing surface contacts said
girdle extending tangentially with respect thereto.

R2~erring to ~ig. 1, an appara-tus o~ -the present
invention compris~s a wall s-tructure 1 lined with
pla-tes 2 of a suitabl~ matcrial, such as a heat-resis~ant
cas-t iron or heat-resistant s-teels. Such a wall struc-
ture generally includes sido wall s-truct,ures 3 and
end wall structures 4. Also, the wall struc-~lr~ 1 forms
with its lower portion a hopper 5 having a dischar~e
hole and framed adjacent -to -the discharge hole with a
girdle 6, as will be best see~ in ~ig. 3. ~h~ hopper 5
is provided with bottom ga-tes 7 servi~g to close -the
discharge hole when reguired. ~he wall structure 1 jointly
wi-th the hopper portion ~e~ines a 5paCe for incandescent
coke. ~ransportin~ -the coke from the coki~g chamb0:r to
the quenchi~g si-te is provided in this illus-tr~tive example,
by -th~-t the apparatus of thc inv~ntion i.s plac~d on a car-
riag0 8 travelling on a rail track. ~he appara-tus is
also equipped wi-th conventionR1 means for lifti~g the
entire apparatus9 such as guiaes g and pull rods 10, and

In accordance with -the pr~sent invention, -the wall
structure 1 a~d the linin~ plates 2 are ~oun-ted in a spaced
rela-tionship to de~ine a gap therebetween, which is
a-ttained with the use of spacin~ membe:rs, such as corru~
ga-ted sheets 12. As will be seen in Figs 1,2, 4-6,
and 9 of the accomp~nyin~ drawing s ( in Flgs 3 and ~0
the spacing membe:rs are not shown for simplicit~
the corrugat0d sheets 12 are ln-terposed b~tween tho wall
struc-t~r~ 1 and ~he lining plates 2, with the ends of the

th~ bolt 14 -~rom an axial displac~me~t, the entire as-
sembly is secured by a nut 15. This arran~ement makes
-thus possible the Iinear expansion of the lining pla-tes 2,
ensurin~ at the same time an adequ~t~ -tightness o~ -the
join-t.
As shown in ~ig~ 3 and in ~reater detail in Fig. 10,
thc girdle 6 of -the hopper 5 is o~ a rou~d cross-s~ction,
In this embodiment of the inven-tion, -the girdle 6 is
~abrica-ted from ~ suitable -tubing, and the bo-ttom ga-tes
7 have thc convontional construction o~ w~ldmen-ts turnable
around hinge pins 16 in hinges 17 secured to the wall
s-truc-ture 1 adjacent to ~he discharge hole o~ -thc hopper 5.

concept, the gates 7 are provided with sealing members 18

the level of the lining plates 2 o~ the bottom gates
and guarded by the linin~ plates o~ the wall struc-ture 1,
which ensures a more dependable closin~ o~ the gates 7 and
isolation of the sealing members 18 from the -thermal
ef~ect of incandescent cok~.
The bottom gates 7 are opera-ted with the aid of
linking members 21 ~in~ed to -the bottom gates by means
of hinge pins 22, the linking members 21 being, in
~heir -turn, hinge-connected to -the pull rods 10 for lifting
the whole apparatus -to a qu~nching -tower. ~he bottom ga-tes
7 open after the apparatus has boen placed with its 9Up~
ports 23 on pedestals (no-t shown) of the ~uencLing towerO
In operation, the apparatus o~ the invention is lo~-
ded with incandescent coke. ~he effect of heat causes
the lining plates 2 to expand, but uncon-troll~d gaps
remain -th~rebe-tween which gaps, however, exert no effect
on the conditions of coke combus-~ion, i.e do no-t promote
the latter, and hence the cok~ loss by burnin~ is cut
down as against the prior ar-t. ~Ihe air dral~ht or inlea
kage is prevented b~ th~ cover pieces 13s while a ~re~
linear thermal expansion of -tl~e lining plates 2 is ensur~d
due to a non-rigid fa~tening of -the lini~g plates 2 by

cover pieces 13 arld to -the provision of slo-ts 24 at ~he
edges of plates 2 and o~ hol~s 25 in -the corruga-ted sheets
12. The corruga-ted sheet 12 prevents -the heat -transfer
from incandescen-t coke -to the wall s-truGture 1 and also
pro~otes the heat -transfer ~rom the lining -to -the ambient
atmosphere, while the bot-tom ga-tes 7, owlng to the
sealing members 18 abut-ti~g on the sur~aces of revolu-tion
of the girdle 6, r~stric-t -the access of air into the
hopper 5.
Whil~ -the preferred embodiment of th~ present inven-
tion has-been shown and described, various modi~ica-tions
may be made in the abovedescribed arr~ngement wi-thout
departing ~rom the scope and spirit o~ the inv~ntion,
as disclosed in -the ~ollowing examples.
The lining plates 2 a~ the corners o~ the appara-tus
are fastened by means o~ ~-shaped cover pieoes 26 and
of -the fla-t cover pices 1~ as shown in Fig. 4-~ while
-the lining plates 2 in the tran~ititon~ o~ the wall struc-
ture 1 -to -the hopper 5 are arr~ngcd so -that -their ~dges
overlap each other, as shown in Fig. 50 It will be clear
to those skilled in -the art th~-t such modi~ic~tions of
the corner transi-tions may be mutually interchanged or
-that either one o~ the modi~ications may be ~mployed -f`or
both corner transitions.

have a trou~h-shaped cros~sec-tion, ~.g., such one as il-
lustrated in Fig. 7 wh~re a rolled U sec-tio~ is shown.
It will b~ seen in this ~igure that a hea-t-resis-tant
material, such as asbestos gaskets, may bo ~mployed in
addition to ~h~ spaci~s member. Eve~ the ga~k~-ts proper
o~ such material may be used a~ -the Cpacing rn~mbers.

invention may have ~ither one fla-t sealing surface (F~g~ 11),

(Fig. 13), or a plurality of the sealing surEacesa such
