La stéatite est une pierre tendre qui, à l'état
naturel, est sans transparence comme sans éclat. Nous
avons donc développé un procédé pour rendre translucide ce
matériau particulièrement économique parce qu'abondant,
pour servir dans la construction de structures diffusant
la lumière. Le procédé consiste en le sciage d'un bloc de
stéatite en une plaque, de un à ving-cinq millimètres
d'épaisseur; cette plaque est alors polie au papier sablé
et lissé à l'eau au papier émeri. Un vernis laque transparent
ou une matière grasse est alors appliqué sur la surface de
la plaque pour rendre celle-ci translucide. Une source lumi-
neuse, dont les rayons traversent la plaque de stéatite,
révélera les motifs et les teintes naturels de la pierre,
qu'on pourra altérer par des teintures, des renflements de
la plaque ou des structures transparentes superposées sur la
plaque.
