Abstract

Apparatus for feeding side boards in a sawmill immediately
after sawing a log or a block into a central portion (16) and
side boards, (17, 18, 19, 20) comprising a longitudinal
conveyor (1) for transporting the central portion in its
longitudinal direction, movable supporting planes (2, 3)
supplied on both sides of the longitudinal conveyor for
temporarily holding up the side boards, and side supports (4,
5) for supporting the side boards in side direction. A slope
(6, 7) is provided beneath the longitudinal conveyor on both
sides of if, along which the side boards (17, 18, 19, 20) slide
down onto a transverse conveyor (12, 13), and the slopes are
provided with stopping means (8, 9) to stop the inner side
boards (19, 20) while the outer boards (17, 18) continue their
travel towards the transverse conveyor.

Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. Apparatus for feeding at least two pairs
of side boards in a sawmill immediately after sawing a
log or a block into a central portion and said side boards,
one pair of side boards being the inner pair located closer
to the central portion and another pair being the outer pair,
comprising a first longitudinal conveyor for transporting
the central portion in its longitudinal direction, first
supports located on both sides of the longitudinal conveyor
for temporarily holding up the side boards, said first
supports being movable and being pivotally mounted on both
sides of said conveyor for temporarily holding the side
boards; side supports on both sides of said conveyor for
supporting the side boards in the side direction; a pair
of fixed slopes located beneath the longitudinal conveyor
on both sides thereof, said side supports being slidable
thereon, a pair of stopping means located on said slopes,
a second conveyor arranged transversely with respect to
the first conveyor, said stopping means having tips which
project beyond said slopes, whereby said stopping means
stop the inner pair of side boards, while the outer pair
continues its travel towards said second conveyor.

2. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein
flexible guides located between said first supports and
said stopping means beside said slopes press the inner
side boards against the slopes when they approach the
stopping means.

3. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the
side boards drop from the slopes onto the transverse
conveyor the cant edge upwards.

4. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the
slopes are provided with two stopping means disposed at a
distance from each other in the direction of the travel of
the side boards.

Apparatus for feeding side boards in a sawmill

The present invention relates to an apparatus for feeding side
boards in a sawmil.l immediately after a log or a block has been
sawn into a central portion and side boards, comprising a
longitudinal conveyor for transport of the central portion in
longitudinal direction, movable supporting planes supplied on
both sides of the longitudinal conveyors for temporarily
holding up the side boards, and side supports for supporting
the side boards in side direction.

An object of the invention is to make possible automation of
the treatment of side boards and to provide an apparatus for
feeding side boards from which the side boards are after sawing
receivecl separetely the cant edge upwards for further treatment,
e.g. trimming, when at least two si.de boards are sawn from
both sides of a log or a block.

The Swedish published patent application no. 415864 di.scloses
an apparatus, where the side boards are dropped one by one onto
a conveyor formed by pockets or the like but the apparatus is
complex and due to many phases of operation slow.

The capacity of the apparatus according to the invention
corresponds to the output capasit~ of the present fas-t sawing
and trlr~ming machines. The apparatus according to the invention
is mainly characterized by the fact that slopes are disposed
beneath a longitudinal conveyor on both sides of it along which
the side boards slide down onto a transverse conveyor, and that
the slopes are provided with stopping means to stop the inner
side boards while the outer ones continue their travel towards
the transverse conveyor.

The invention is described in detail with reEerence to the
attached drawings, including figures 1 to 3, which illustrate
in schematic representation the consecutive operation phases OI
a feedincJ appartus according to the invention.
~` 1

Tn the figures the numeral 1 refers to a conveyor and the
numerals 2 and 3 to supporting planes disposed pivotably on
both sides of the conveyor. Further, the apparatus comprises
support rollers 4, 5 on both sides of the conveyor. Beneath
the conveyor on both side of it there are slopes 6, 7 and in
the slopes movable stopping means 8, 9. Flexible guides 10, 11
are disposed beside the slopes between the supporting planes
and the stopping means.

In figure 1 the central portion 16 of a sawn log is transferred
in its longitudinal direction on the conveyor 1 while the side
boards 17, 18, 19, 20 rest on the supporting planes 2, 3.
Support rollers 4, 5 support the side boards in the side
direction.

When a 1og has been sawn the side boards are released from the
pressure of the support rollers 4, 5 and the supporting planes
2, 3 are wound down as is illustrated in figure 2, whereby the
side boar~s dropp down into converging spaces 21, 22 formed by
the slopes 6, 7 and the guides 10, 11. The stopping means ~8 r
9~, the tips of which project t:hrought the slide surfaces as is
illustrated in the figure, stop the side boards 19, 20 which
are after sawing closer to the central portion. The
outer side boards 17, 1~ continue without stopping their travel
towards the transverse conveyors 12, 13 further down. The
slopes are thus formed that the side boards dropp down onto the
transverse conveyor the cant edge up whereby they need not be
turned before trimming. The position of the side boards on the
transverse conveyor is corrected by pins 14, 15.

After this the pins 14, 15 are lowered down and the side boards
17, 18 are transported away, whereby the conveyors are ready to
accept the outer side boards 19, 20~ The stopping means 8, 9
are then turrled to their down position, as is :indicated in
figure 3, whereby the side boards slide down alon~ the slopes
and dropp onto -the transverse conveyor 12, 13. The supporting

planes are returned to their lnitial. position and the apparatus
is ready to accept the side boards of the next log.

The invention is applicable also when three side boards at a
time are sawn from both sides of a central portion. Two
stopping means can then be disposed in the slopes at a distance
Erom each other in the direction of the travel of the side
boards, whereby, after the supporting planes 2, 3 have dropped
the side boards, the first stopping means arrest the innermost
side board, the second one stops the side board in the middle
and the outermost board conti.nues its travel without stopping
towards the transverse conveyor.

The invention is not limited to the embodiments which are
presented here as examples, only, but several modifications and
variations can be made of it without deviating from the scope
of the invention~
