English Abstract

ABSTRACT

A skin moisturizing composition comprises from 10%
to 30% glycerin, in combination with from 0.2% to 5% of
a polymer or copolymer which reduces the lubricity of
the glycerin but does not leave a wet or oily feeling
on the skin of the user.

Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:

1. A cosmetic composition for moisturising skin,
comprising from 10% to 30%, by weight of the composition, of
glycerin, from 0.2% to 5%, by weight of the composition, of
particulate polymer or copolymer, and a cosmetically acceptable
carrier.

2. A composition according to claim 1, comprising
from 15% to 30%, by weight of glycerin.

3. A composition according to claim 2, comprising
from 0.2% to 2%, by weight of polymer or copolymer.

4. A composition according to claim 1, in which
the copolymer comprises an acrylic copolymer or starch graft
copolymer.

5. A composition according to claim 4, in which
the copolymer is present in an amount of from 0.5% to 1% by
weight.

6. A composition according to claim 1, in which
the polymer or copolymer comprises polyethylene microspheres
or polyamide powder.

'

7. A composition according to claim 6 in which the
polymer or copolymer particles have an average
particle size of from 5 to 15 microns.

8. A process for preparing a cosmetic composition
according to any one of claims 1 to 3, which
comprises admixing the components of the
composition in the required proportions.

COMPOSITIONS

The present lnventlon relates to cosmetlc
compositions, containlng glycerln, whlch are useful Eor
mparting molsture to the skin o humans.

Hitherto~ glycerin has been suggested for use ln
the treatment of dry skin conditlons but one
disadvantage of any composition which contains a high
concentration of glycerin lS that lt leaves a wet and
coated Eeellng on the skin which is cosmetically
unacceptable to ~he user.

It has now been found that the above dlsadvantage
can be overcome or reduced by including polymer
partlcles ln a cosmetlc composltlon containlng high
levels of glycerln. At the same tlme, the skin
moisturlslng properties of glycerln can be efflclently
utillsed.

Accordlng to the present lnventlon, there lS
provlded a cosmetic composition for molsturislng skln,
comprislng from 10% to 30%, by weight of the
composition, of glycerln~ from 0.2% to 5~, by weight of
the composltlon, of particulate polymer or copolymer,
and a cosmetically acceptable carrier.

.

.

36'~
-- 2

Preferably, the amount of glycer1n lS from 15% to
30~. Other suitable amounts of glycerln are from 10%
to ?0%, or 20% to 30%. The preferred amount of polymer
or copolymer lS from 0.2% to 2%, particularly
preferably about 0.5%.

The polymer or copolymer ln the composltlon of the
1nventlon should be capable of reducing the lubrlc1~y
of the glycer1n so that the compos1t1on has a non-o1ly,
non-wet feel on the users sk1n.

Polymers whlch are part1cularly useful in the
compos1t1on according to the 1nventlon are acryl1c
copolymers such as those descrlbed 1n Unlted States
Patent Nos. 4,043,952 and 4,090,013, and starch-graft
copolymers such as those described in US Patent Nos.
3,935,099, 3,981,100, 3,985,616, ~,069,177, 4,04S,387,
4,116,899, 4,134,863 and 4,194,998.

The composltlon of t.he lnvent.ion preferably
contalns from about 0.5% to about 1~ of acryl1c or
starch-graft copolymer, particularly preferably about
0.5%.

Other useful polymers are polyethylene
mlcrospheres, such as Polymlst B-6 (Polymist is a trade
mark), and polyamlde powder, such as Orgasol 2002D
(Orgasol lS a trade mark).

The polymer or copolymer lS preferably ln the form
of part1cles having an average part1cle s1ze ln the
range of 5 to 15 mlcrons, preferably 5 to 7 m1crons.

In a further aspect, the present lnventlon
prov1des a method of lmparting molsture to skln wh1ch
compr1ses applying to skin an effective amount of a
composition of the lnventlon.

.

~3~
-- 3 --

The compos1t1on of the lnventlon may lnclude any
of the lngred1ents customarlly used in cosmetlc
formulatlons lntended for appllcat1on to sk1n. Typ1cal
lngredlents are preservatlves, perfumes, colouring
agents and antl oxidants. The cosmetically acceptable
carrler may compr1se conventional materlals such as
oil-ln-water or, water-in-oll emulslons.

The compos1tlon of the lnvention may be prepared
by admlxture. Accordlngly, the inventlon also provldes
a process for preparlng the cosmetlc compos1tlon of the
lnventlon, whlch comprlses admixlng the components of
the compos1tion 1n the requlred proportlons~

The admixing should be carrled out so that the
polymer or copolymer is un1formly dispersed throughout
the f1nal compos1tlon.

The oll-1n-water or water-ln-oll emulsion may be
prepared accordlng to general methods descr1bed in UK
Patent Speciflcation Nos. 1 489 133 and 2 026 319. The
emuls1on may then be mixed wlth the glycerine and
copolymer or polymer to produce the flnal composltlon
of the lnventlon.

The lnventlon ls now illustrated by means of the
followlng Examples.
