English Abstract

SOUND DAMPER FOR A RUNNING WHEEL

ABSTRACT
A body sound damper for a running wheel, in particular for a
track wheel comprises wave guides juxtaposed in a circumferential
direction and being in the form of horn-shaped parts. The wave
guides form an annular plate of such a design that at least one
side of each wave guide runs tangentially towards the inside
diameter of the annular plate and that, if applicable, a part
of the wave guides is divided into more segments of horn-shape
part. For the attenuation of the axial vibrations of the running
wheel, the wave guides are bent outwardly at their outer base
surface parallel to the axial direction of the running wheel and
positively connected to the wheel rim of the running wheel at the
bent base surface.

Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

THE EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED IS AS FOLLOWS

1. A body sound damper for a running wheel, particularly a
track wheel having a hub portion, a web portion extending
radially outwardly of the hub portion and a rim around the
periphery of the web portion, comprising a plurality of horn-
shaped circumferentially nested wave guides each having axially
extending circumferentially oriented outer edges secured to the
rim and having base portions extending outwardly parallel to the
axial direction of the wheel.
2. A body sound damper according to claim 1, wherein said
of the outer edges of said horn-shaped wave guides are overlapped
circumferentially.
3. A mechanical vibration damper for a running wheel
particularly a rail vehicle wheel, comprising a plurality of
wave guides formed of horn-shaped parts arranged side by side in
a circumferential direction of each associated wheel, said wheel
having hub portions and outer rims spaced from said hub portions
radially, said horn part being power-coupled at their radially
external base with the rim of said wheel and provided at least
partially with a damping compound, said horn part forming wave
guides together with said hub, and at least one side of each wave
guide running tangentially toward the inner radius of said hub,
and at least some of said wave guides being subdivided into
additional horn-part-shaped segments which are bent at their base

surface parallel to the axial direction of the running wheel
outwardly and are connected by means of intermediate layers to a
common base, the power-coupling with said rim of said running
wheel taking place at this bent base surface and including a
plurality of screws extending to said horn shaped segment
accepting said power coupling.

SOU~D D.i~lPER FOR A RU~ G lYHEEL 1~274

.
FIELD ~ND BACKGROUND OF ~HE INVENTION

~he invention relates particularly to a body sound damper for
a running ~iheel, in particular for a track wheel, with wave guides
juxtaposed in circumferential directions in the form of horn
parts, the wave guidesf~rming an annular plate of such a design
that at least one side of each l~ave guide runs tangentially towards
the inside diameter of the annular plate and that, if applicable,
a part of the wave guides is divided into more segments of
10 horn-shape parts.

.~ body sound damper similar to the present invention is described
in German patent 31 19 497. By means of spacers the wave guides
of the sound damper are joined at their base surface to form one
common base and positively connected to the wheel rim by means of
15 screws.

The invention provides an improvement over the body sound damper
shown in German patent 31 19 a,97 without departing from the basic
concept of the wave guides forming an annular plate. Radial and
axial vibrations are to be damped.

20 According to the invention, for the attenuation of the vibrations
of a running wheel, the wave guides are bent outwardly at the
base surface parallel to the axial direction of the running wheel
and positively connected to the running wheel rim at the bent base
surface.

j Accordingly, it is an object of the in~ention to provide a
I body sound damper for a running wheel and particularly a track
wheel whicll has a hub portion, a web portion e~tending radially
outwardly of the hub portion and a rim around the periphery of
the web portion and which comprises a plurality of horn-shaped
circumferentially nested wave guides each having axially e~tend-
ing circumferentially oriented edges secured to the rim.

A further object of the invention is to provide a wave guide for
a running wheel whic}l is simple in design, rugged in construction
and economical to manufacture.

The various features of novelty which characteri-e the invention
are pointed out with particularity in the claims anne~ed to and
forming a part of this disclosure. For a better understanding of
the invention, its operating advantages and specific objects
attained by its uses, reference is made to the accompanying
drawings and descriptive matter in which a preferred embodiment
of the invention is illustrated.
.,
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

In the drawings:

Fig. 1 is a partial top vie~ of a body sound damper on a running
wheel with tangentially e~tending horn-shaped parts constructed
in accordance with the invention; and
.

Fig. 2 is a partial transvers section of the body sound damper
shown in Fig. 1.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED E~IBODIMENT

Referring to the drawings in particular the invention embodied
therein comprises a body sound damper for running wheel particu
larly a track wheel which has a hub portion 3, a web portion 3a
-2-

.
e~tending radially outwardly of the hub portion and a rim 2
e~tending around the periphery o the web portion. In accordance
with ~he invention the sound damper comprises a plurality of
horn-shaped circumferentially nested wave guides la, lb, lc, ld,
le, lf,lg, and lh. The wave guides have axially extending
circumferentially oriented edges or base surfaces 40 which are
arranged circumferentially so as ~o form continuous or overlapping
circumferential surfaces which are secured to the rim 2.

'- ` ''~ The'body sound damper'shown'in Fi~. 1 is assembled of wave guides10 in the form of horn-shaped parts or wave guides la to lh, ju~ta-
posed in a circumferential direc-tion. The ~Ya~e guides la to lh
forming the body sound damper are positively fastened to the
wheel rim 2 of a track wheel. The inside diameter of the wave
guides is penetrated by the wheel axle 3.

15 The German patent 31 19 4g7 is referred to for further details.

In the transverse section of the body sound damper according to
Fig. 2 several superposed and congruent wave guides 4, S, 6 can be
seen. The wave guides 4,5 and 6 have a base surface which are
bent outwardly parallel to the a~ial direction of the trac~ wheel,
20 interconnected with sturdy washers 7 to form one common base,
and joined positively to the wheel rim 2 at the bent base surface
by means of screws 8. The washers 7 are located between the
individual wave guides 4, S, 6. If applicable and desired,
such a washer may also be disposed between the wheel rim 2 and
25 the outermost bent base of the wave guide 6. The washers in the
area of the wave guide fastening assure that a certain spacing
between the wave guides and possibly also the wheel rim and
outermost wave guide is maintained.

Layers 9 of damping material are placed between the wave guides
30 4,5,6 in other areas, i.e. outside of the wave guide fastenings.

~:25~1~33

Each ~Yave guide la to lh ~4,5,6) .is fastened to the wheel rim 2
by at least one screw. Naturally, for static reasons, each one
of the wave guides la to lh arran~ed in circumferential direction
on the wheel rim 2 must have the same number of fastening screws
~.

l~hile a specific embodiment o the invention has been shown and
described in detail to illustrate the application of the principles
of the inventi.on, it will be understood -that the invention may be
embodied otherwise ~ithou- departlng from such prlnciples.
