including a rear lug with a hole therethrough into an earring
or other article of jewelry includes a thin, elongated body with
one inverted V-shaped end for insertion into the hole in the
button lug and an arm perpendicular to such one end for insertion
through a pierced ear or carrying a conventional ear clip for
non-pierced ears. The arm can also be inserted into a
conventional keeper or catch when the device is to be used for
converting the button to a broach, or other article of jewelry.

Claims

Note: Claims are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A jewelry device for carrying a button of the type
including a mounting lug extending outwardly from the rear surface
thereof with an opening for attaching the button to an article of
clothing, said device comprising elongated body means; post means at
one end of said body means for insertion into the button lug for
mounting the button on the device; and connector means perpendicular
to said post means for connecting the device to a catch, whereby the

Description

Note: Descriptions are shown in the official language in which they were submitted.

This invention relates to a jewelry device, and in
particular to a device for converting a button into an earring, or
other article of jewelry.
Earrings, and broaches particularly of the costume jewelry
type, are available n a large variet~ of sizes, shapes and colours.
However, matching such jewelry to a wardrobe can be a time consuming,
expensive and frustrating experience.
The object of the present invention is to offer a
solution to the above-defined problem by providing a relativel~
simple device which can be used to convert a button to an article
of jewelry.
Accordingly, the present invention relates to a jewelry
device Eor carrylng a button oE the type including a mo~lnting
lug extending outwardly from the rear surface thereof with an
opening for attaching the button to an article of clothing, said
device comprising elongated body means; post means at one end
of said body means for insertion into the button lug for mounting
the button on the device; and connector means perpendicular to
said lug means for connecting the device to a catch, whereby the
button can be used as an article of jewelry.
The invention will be described in detail with reference
to the accompanying drawings which illustrate preferred emhodi-
ments of the invention and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view from above and one side
of an earring device in accordance with the present invention;

Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the device of

Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the device of
Figs. 1 and 2;
Figure 4 is a plan view of the device of Figs. 1 to 3;
Figure 5 is a perspective view from from above and one side
of a second embodiment of the device of the present invention;
Figure 6 is a side elevational view of the device of
; Fig. 5 and
Figure 7 is an end elevational view of the device of Figs.
5 and 6.
With reference to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, one embodiment
of the present invention which is itended for use by a person
without pierced ears includes an elongated body 1, with an inverted
V-shaped projection or post 2 near one end 3 thereof. The post 2
is inserted into an opening in a lug 5 ofconventional lug button
6. The post 2 is slightly resilient, so that it presses against
the sides of the opening in the lug 5 to retain the button 6 on the
post. The expression "conventional lug button" is intended to mean
2-0 a button of the type including a body 7 of any colour, shape or
size with the lug 5 extending outwardly from the rear surface
thereof. The lug 5 defines a loop, which normally receives thread
for attaching the button 6 to an article of c~othing.
The other end of the body defines an arm 9, which is
~- 25 perpendiaular to the projection 2, i.e. the arm 9 extends outwardly

in a line perpendicular to the plane of the V-shaped projection,
and consequently perpendicular to the plane of the rear surface
of the button 6. The outer free end of the arm 9 is connected
to one side of a conventional ear clip 10 of the type including
a generally u-snaped body 11 and a jaw 12 pivotally connectecl
thereto for attaching the clip to an ear lobe.
A second embodiment of the invention (Fugs. 5 to 7)
which is intended for use with pierced ears includes the same
basic elements as the first embodiment, except that the arm 9
is extended. The outer free end 14 of the arm 9 defines a pin
forinsertionthrough the ear lobe and lnto a conventional
plerced earring keeper or catch 15.
It w.~ e appreciatecl that wlth ~he aevlces descrlbecl
above but~ons can readily be converteci in~o earrlngs. Commonly,
articles of clothing are provided wlth spare buttons, ancl such
spare buttons can be used as earrings. Alternatively, a
plurality of buttons can be purchased to replace the exlstlng
~uttons on an article of clotning, and to produce earrings at
the samé time.
It will also be appreciated that the device can be used
to convert a button to a broach, lapel pin or other article
of jewelry, the earring belng described by way of example only.
